    4. Bottas out-paced team-mate Lewis Hamilton to bag pole.

    5. A new contract makes Pierre Gasly an even faster driver, after making it to P4 in qualifying.

  5. Post update

Love the positive attitude of the Racing Point team!

But what they say is true - the points are all won on race day.

I wonder what they will be able to do tomorrow?

    Andrew Benson

    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Valtteri Bottas beat Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton to pole position with his last lap of qualifying at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

The Finn was 0.097 seconds quicker than Hamilton, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen third nearly 0.5secs behind.

Alpha Tauri's Pierre Gasly was a surprise fourth, ahead of Renault's Daniel Ricciardo and Red Bull's Alexander Albon.

On Sunday Mercedes could win a seventh consecutive constructors' title.

  7. Leclerc - 'Expected something more'

At the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari circuit, Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc will start the race at Imola on Sunday from P7 - and on the soft tyres too.

This is what he had to say to Sky Sports after that qualifying session.

"P7 - I am not completely satisfied - I expected something more. We were not as competitive as we could have been today."

  8. Get Involved #bbcf1

    Bottas on pole at Imola

Alex: Fair play to Bottas, his relentless chase of Lewis is a clear sign of his determination to beat the best. And an unbelievable effort from Gasly, P4! His AlphaTauri the quickest Italian car on the grid, oh dear Ferrari...

Tom Angier: I hate that everyone is calling George Russell Mr Saturday, just because he’s proving unbeatable in quali it doesn’t mean he’s not also spectacular in the race.

AGL: Well done to Bottas for that, stunning lap and nothing between the two Mercs. Shame to see the McLarens so far down but hopefully they’ll get their elbows out and do some racing tomorrow!

  9. Mercedes - the history makers?

Mercedes could win a seventh constructors' championship in a row.

Will they do it this weekend?

  10. Post update

So Bottas, Hamilton and Verstappen will all start the race on the medium compound tyres.

And according to Hamilton Turn 1 is the best place to overtake - so it should be an epic opening lap tomorrow.

  11. Hamilton - 'That was a pretty p**** poor lap'

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton who will start the race tomorrow from P2:

"Bottas did a great job and that was a pretty p*** poor lap from myself and you can't always get things perfect. I am grateful to be here and to have the performance that we have, and it is a real challenge out there and I enjoyed it.

"We will probably see a boring race as there is no real single place to overtake - the DRS will do some overtakes at Turn 1. I will give it everything I have got tomorrow. They don't build tracks like this anymore, it is a classic and has got the history."

  12. 'Pole is never easy'

Valtteri Bottas, who qualified on pole position: "You always have to fight. It's never easy getting pole.

"I really enjoyed it. This track is beautiful and it's a great feeling to get pole - I had the shakes afterwards! I had to prove it on the last lap and it's a great feeling when you get close.

"Turns Two to Three I was really working on and the last couple of corners. I struggled a little with the stability of the car but I risked it on the last lap and it worked.

"It’s going to be fun. It’s one of the longest runs down to Turn One. We all know Lewis will be there and Max as well."

  13. 'I wanted to be closer'

Max Verstappen, who starts third on the grid: "It wasn't a great qualifying because of the issue, we didn't have a lot of laps.

"It was a bit tricky. The mediums got through, we seemed to be struggling a bit, not a lot of grip. The second run was a bit better.

"P3 is not bad but personally, I wanted to be a little but closer.

"The track is really cool, really enjoyable to drive. I thought it might be too narrow for these cars but hoping we’ll have a good race here tomorrow."

  14. Team radio - AlphaTauri to Gasly

Engineer: "P4 for you. Good job mate."

Gasly: "Woah! Honestly the car has P4, that's the best quali, so great job."

  15. Qualifying top ten

  16. Mercedes front row

So Hamilton joins Bottas on the front row, but has to settle for P2 and misses out on his 98th pole position.
