  2. Verstappen fastest in second practice - read the report

    Andrew Benson

BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer in Montreal, Canada

Red Bull's Max Verstappen headed Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen in second practice at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Verstappen's team-mate Daniel Ricciardo leapt up to third place late on after electrical problems delayed him. But Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes appeared to be quickest, fourth and 0.579 seconds off the pace on a slower tyre.

The session was characterised by teams juggling tyres to work out their best strategy for qualifying and race with the awkward hyper-soft rubber.

The hyper-soft is much faster over one lap than the ultra-soft, the medium of three compounds this weekend, but it degrades much faster than other two, and at least some of the top three teams are likely to try to avoid starting the race on it.

  3. 'Not the best day but we're OK'

Daniel Ricciardo, speaking to Sky Sports: “The problems I had here weren’t related to MGU-K. It was not the best day but we’re OK.

Max showed good pace. Mercedes are going to be big tomorrow. They’re the ones to beat. We hope to have a smooth day tomorrow and get a bit more pace.”

  4. Session two times

These are the times from the second session. Only nine laps from Carlos Sainz before a smash into the wall ended his day early, and extended his mechanics' day.

  5. 'We're lacking a bit of top speed'

Max Verstappen, speaking to Sky Sports: “It was a good day. The car’s working well but we’re lacking a bit of top speed. Mercedes looked very quick but we are not too far away.”

  6. The bottom 10

    • 11 Charles Leclerc (Sauber, 1:13.884)
    • 12 Brendon Hartley (Toro Rosso, 1:13.889)
    • 13 Kevin Magnussen (Haas, 1:13.956)
    • 14 Nico Hulkenberg (Renault, 1:13.967)
    • 15 Marcus Ericsson (Sauber, 1:14.108)
    • 16 Stoffel Vandoorne (McLaren, 1:14.167)
    • 17 Carlos Sainz (Renault, 1:14.433)
    • 18 Pierre Gasly (Toro Rosso, 1:14.486)
    • 19 Lance Stroll (Williams, 1:14.703)
    • 20 Sergey Sirotkin (Williams, 1:14.782)

All of these best laps were set on hypersofts, apart from Vandoorne (ultrasofts) and Sainz (supersofts).

  7. 'Hamilton still the favourite'

    Jolyon Palmer

Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

The favourite has to be Lewis Hamilton still. We're yet to see him on the hypersoft tyres. He's half-a-second off the pace, we think the hypersofts are worth about 0.7 seconds.

So it's close between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, and potentially Kimi Raikkonen as well, who is just over 0.1 secs behind Verstappen. Again, that's all three teams in the mix.

It's been a wretched day for Sebastian Vettel, but I'm not going to discount him either. So many times, Ferrari have had a tough Friday and then pulled it all together on a Saturday.

    Lewis Hamilton
  8. The top 10

    1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull, 1:12.198)
    2. Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari, 1:12.328)
    3. Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull, 1:12.603)
    4. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes, 1:12.777)
    5. Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari, 1:12.985)
    6. Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes, 1:13.061)
    7. Romain Grosjean (Haas, 1:13.620)
    8. Esteban Ocon (Force India, 1:13.747)
    9. Sergio Perez (Force India, 1:13.754)
    10. Fernando Alonso (McLaren, 1:13.866)

All the best times were set on the hypersofts, apart from Hamilton (supersofts), Bottas (ultrasofts) and Alonso (ultrasofts).

  9. BreakingVerstappen fastest in both sessions on Friday

Yesterday he was threatening to headbutt people, today he hit the critics where it hurts - with his performances on the track.

Max Verstappen was fastest in session one and Max Verstappen was fastest in session two.

    Well played, sir.

    Max Verstappen
  10. Tyre tactics

  11. Post update

The best laps for the top 14 have come on the hypersofts, apart from Hamilton (fourth, supersofts), Bottas (sixth, ultrasofts), Alonso (10th, ultrasofts).

  12. Post update

Well, that's how it was, Daniel Ricciardo has now jumped up to third. Red Bull one and three, just as it was earlier today.

    Daniel Ricciardo

Mercedes 3rd (Hamilton) and 6th (Bottas)

Haas 7th (Grosjean) and 13th (Magnussen)

Force India 8th (Ocon) and 9th (Perez)

McLaren 10th (Alonso) and 16th (Vandoorne)

Renault 14th (Hulkenberg) and 17th (Sainz)

Williams 19th (Stroll) and 20th (Sirotkin)

  14. Post update

Good work from the Red Bull mechanics, with Daniel Ricciardo, on the supersofts, up to fourth.

  15. Get Involved #bbcf1

Who would you like to see replaced in Formula 1 and why? Who would you replace them with?

Rohit‏: Ocon at Mercedes in place of Bottas.

Amit Mandalia‏: The midfield is looking close again, one second covering Grosjean in sixth and Gasly in 17th.

  16. Post update

Daniel Ricciardo, after some extensive work on his Red Bull, moves up to 14th and that means the two Williams cars are the two slowest.

In session one they were 17th and 18th, but 19th was Formula 2 Championship driver Nicholas Latifi and Nico Hulkenberg did not set a time because of a gear issue.

So, in effect, Williams are the two slowest in both sessions. Another miserable weekend coming their way.

    Daniel Ricciardo
  17. Post update

Brendon Hartley locks up all four tyres and drifts off the track. Luckily for him, there is no wall to greet him.

  18. Tyre maths with Mercedes

    Jennie Gow

BBC Radio 5 live pit-lane reporter

I've just been doing all the maths and talking to Pirelli. Mercedes only brought five sets of the hypersoft tyres with them this weekend. They've got four sets to get themselves through qualifying, because one set would be for Q3.

So they have two runs for each qualifying session if they want to go out on the hypers, which is probably why they're not touching them at the moment - because if they do, they don't have enough of the new hypers to do two runs each. That's a problem for them.

The difference between the hypersoft and the ultrasoft at the moment is 1.1 seconds. It would be a huge gamble if Mercedes didn't run a hyper in Q2. I can't see it happening. I can't see that they'd get through or be willing to take that gamble.

  19. Post update

A good day so for Max Verstappen. Fastest in session one and, with just over 15 minutes left, fastest in session two.

  20. Post update

Virtual safety car gone, and we have just over 25 minutes of the session to go.

Daniel Ricciardo is soon to be allowed back on the track after some frantic work from his team. Have they done enough to ensure no grid penalties come his way? There will be some fingers crossed in the Red Bull garage for the rest of this session.
