  1. No room for error

    .

Less than three tenths of a second covered the top four in qualifying. If anything, Mercedes and Ferrari seem even closer. One mistake, as Sebastian Vettel found out today, can prove costly.

Chuck in Fernando Alonso, who let's not forget played tennis between first and second practice, starting from seventh and what a race we have in prospect tomorrow!

We're back at 11:30 BST for build up. See you then.

Darren Thompson: Alonso is still the best driver in Formula 1. That is an astonishing qualifying.

Chris C: For the love of the sport, please put @alo_oficial in a competitive car.

  4. Post update

Sauber and McLaren are the only teams yet to score in 2017. This is McLaren's best chance so far this season, as long as they don't break down.

  5. The season so far

    .

Three drivers have won races so far - Sebastain Vettel (two), Lewis Hamilton (one) and Valtteri Bottas (one).

Hamilton is in prime position to win his second of the season. All but three of the last 16 Spanish Grands Prix have been won from pole position.

  6. Sights set on Senna's Spain record

Lewis Hamilton is also closing in on Ayrton Senna's amount of pole positions in Spain. Hamilton is now on three, Senna got four. Michael Schumacher (who else?) is out in front on seven. (Forix)

  7. Post update

One of these two got pole, the other didn't - can you guess which one?

    Sebastien Vettel and Lewis Hamilton
  8. Edging closer

    .

Pole position is Lewis Hamilton's third in Spain and 64th of his career. He is now just one behind Ayrton Senna and four behind record-holder Michael Schumacher.

  9. GRANDE! GRANDE! GRANDE!

BK: Trying to explain @alo_oficial 7th place...it's like @usainbolt coming 4th running blindfolded! Good show

Nick Hughes: Alonso keeps showing why he's the best on the grid finishing 7th. What are the chances he breaks down on formation lap?

  11. 'A gift'

    .

Fernando Alonso thinks his IndyCar test stint earlier this month helped him to a stunning seventh in qualifying.

"Maybe it was at the oval I learnt how to go quick on the straights," he said.

"P7 is a gift and we will see what we can do tomorrow. This is a circuit that is difficult to overtake but we will try to get a position."

  12. 'Great job'

Valtteri Bottas, who qualified third: "I am very pleased and it is always a good starting point when you start from the second row and the guys did a great job to get the car back on track."

  13. 'A miracle by the team'

Sebastian Vettel, who qualified second: "I am afraid it was [the last corner]. The last chicane is a tricky one for me. It was very close, well done to Lewis. It was a busy morning, big thank you to the team for the change in the last few minutes. They did an engine change in sub two hours.  It is a miracle they got me out. It would have been nice to get them pole but hopefully a good race tomorrow."

  14. 'Amazing job'

    Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas

Lewis Hamilton, who secured pole position: The fans are amazing and I have been growing here over past 10 years, amazing job by team. I could see the fans cheering and the flags were out and is a morale boost when it is not your home circuit."

  15. Post update

Right, we are entering new territory. The top three are stood on the grid with F1 journalist Will Buxton set to ask them questions...
