I'm never one to wish time away but I cannot wait for tomorrow's race. Ferraris on the front row, Lewis Hamilton behind them. Brilliant.

  4. 'Frustrating at times'

Fernando Alonso qualified 15th and had this to say: "I felt good and competitive and the grip was there on the straight but we were losing big times today. Definitely been frustrating at times but we need to think about tomorrow and we know that this circuit is power sensitive."

  5. 'Ferrari have stepped up'

  6. Post update

Pole position is the 47th of Sebastian Vettel's career and his first since Singapore 2015.

Vettel won the last nine races he started on pole.

Make no mistake, Mercedes have a battle on their hands.

  7. 'Sunday is the day that counts'

Valtteri Bottas, who qualified third: "All weekend Ferrari have had the upper hand, but Sunday is always the day that counts."

  8. 'We are back'

More from Sebastian Vettel: "In qualifying Mercedes have been very, very strong. I am sure it will be very close tomorrow. Especially over the long run. We will see but for now are full, of joy. We are back, at least if you talk about the front row."

  9. Post update

Kimi Raikkonen, who qualified second: "I got some traffic on the last set and it was a bit more tricky and I tried to get it back on the last corner but much happier than in previous qualifying. It is one for the team and not too bad."

  10. Post update

Sebastian Vettel, who qualified on pole position: "I had a good start to the session and was feeling reasonably comfortable. I lost a bit of rhythm in Q2 and then in Q3 the first run was not really tidy and I left it to the end. I knew it would be tight, I knew I would be the first one crossing the line. I got Valtteri's time and he did not manage to improve and when I got the message I had got it I was over the moon.

"If you have a rhythm here it feels fantastic. I am glad I got it back. It is great to have both cars on the front row but it is only part of the job done."

Kenny Kong: What a cracking end to Q3, first @ScuderiaFerrari front row lock-out since 2008! Both drivers put in smashing laps to out-gun Mercs

Darren Thompson: That Ferrari is impressive. So glad to see someone else at the front!

Marcus Richards: Ferrari one-two, how long have we had to wait for that?! Stunning qualifying from Ferrari!

  14. Post update

Mercedes' run of successive pole positions ends at 18 - a run that goes back to Monaco last year.

It is also the first time in 31 races they have not got a car on the front row.

    Unfamiliar territory.

It is a Ferrari lock out for the first time this season and the team are elated it's their first pole since the 2015 Singapore GP.

  18. Post update

It's Ferrari front row lockout for the first time since the 2008 French Grand Prix as Kimi Raikkonen takes second on the grid.

Valtteri Bottas takes third with less than a tenth of a second seperating the top three. Wow that's close!

Wow! Third for Valtteri Bottas and FOURTH for Lewis Hamilton. Again they lost out in the final sector.

Hamilton finishes more than half a second off the pace!
