  1. Hamilton quickest in FP2

    Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton is the main man in Monza on day one of racing.

You can read our chief F1 writer Andrew Benson's report here.

I'll be back at 09:30 BST tomorrow morning for FP3 and then qualifying. Why not come along for the ride?

  2. Post update

    Tom Clarkson

    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

I think we've learned Mercedes are going to be very strong this weekend. Ferrari with their upgraded power unit - which word on the street says isn't that significant - seem to have found a bit of pace and might have an advantage over Red Bull.

But it will only be in practice tomorrow that we will know the lay of the land.

  3. Post update

So top two Mercedes. Next two Ferrari. Next two Red Bull.

    That makes things simple.

Fernando Alonso, despite problems with his McLaren, finished a very decent seventh.

Nick Holland: I think they sank Hulkenberg's Battleship!

    Very good. Well done, Nick.

  6. Chequered flag

And with that fascinating insight into F1, the flag drops and it will be Lewis Hamilton who finishes FP2 top of the pile.

  7. Post update

Oh jeez. Welcome to F1 in 2016.

"Driver default multi-function B 23," Nico Hulkenberg is told by his Force India team.

Nico essentially tells them to stop being all David Brent about everything and to talk to him like a human boy.

  8. Post update

After a turbo boost issue in FP1, Felipe Massa's FP2 has been hampered by a brake sensor problem.

He's going to give it another go.

  9. Post update

Jenson Button wants to clock off early.

"Do we think there's any use in continuing? Nothing is really changing. We're just driving around and putting miles into everything," he says on the radio.

If my boss is reading, can I get off early too?

  10. Post update

"I'm really struggling with the rears. In slow speed there is no traction," Sebastian Vettel tells Ferrari.

His current set of soft shoes have done 22 laps in total - 15 on this stint.

  11. Get Involved - Who should replace Massa at Williams?

    #bbcf1

Daniel Janes: Has to be Paul Di Resta for the Williams seat, thought he did well for Force India

Elias Skaff: I would like to see Sergio Perez at @WilliamsRacing I believe he's done enough for @ForceIndiaF1 & @PWehrlein to replace him

  12. Post update

Lewis Hamilton asks how his long-run is looking. Mercedes tell him he's looking gooooood.

  13. Massa memories

    Fill me up, buttercup.

Is this the greatest moment of Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso's one-year partnership at Ferrari?

    The answer is, yes.

    Daniil Kvyat's head has gone.

"I went wide on the... erm... I can't remember the name for it," he says on the radio.

    Ctrl+Alt+Delete the brain Daniil.

To be fair, I forget 99.9% of words in all of my non-first languages.

  15. Monza secures three more years

    Monza

It's official. Monza will be the home of the Italian GP for the next three years.

It was confirmed at a media conference with Uncle Bernie.

I'm not sure a media conference during on-track action is great PR.

Anyhoo - read more about the announcement here.

  16. Post update

Off we go on the long runs. Don't expect to see times dropping like they're hot, dropping like they're hot.

But we'll get an even better idea of how well these tyres are holding up - at the moment they're looking much more durable than they were in the conditions of Spa.

    Sixteen minutes left.

  17. Get Involved - Who will replace Massa at Williams?

    #bbcf1

Jessica: I'd love to see @alexlynnracing in that seat, Young Driver programmes and GP2 should be the route into F1

Timothy Young: No love yet for Antonio Felix da Costa for the Williams seat? Established talent in junior openwheel and DTM race winner too #bbcf1

Michael Mason: New Williams Driver How about Usain Bolt he's semi retired and if it breaks down at least he can run.

  18. Monza memories

In case you were unaware how much Italian fans love Ferrari...

  20. Post update

Esteban Gutierrez gets all sweary on the radio because he thinks Felipe Nasr has blocked him off.

Mexican Gutierrez gets so angry he dives around the Sauber and then locks up going into the next corner, flat-spotting some tyres.

That's where a temper gets you.
