Nico Rosberg has two poles in Germany now. Jim Clark (above) and Jacky Ickx lead the way with four (Forix).

  3. Post update

A frustrating day for Sebastian Vettel as once again Ferrari fail to threaten in qualifying.

For the second time in three races, the German could only manage the sixth quickest time, and he's clearly not happy.

"I didn't feel that comfortable in qualifying," he says. "We're not here to start P5 or P6. We have fallen back."

  4. Like father, like son

    Nico Rosberg

Here's a nice stat - Nico Rosberg secures pole 30 years after his dad Keke also secured pole at the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim.

  5. 'We got close to Mercedes'

    F1

Daniel Ricciardo, who qualified third: "I think we got pretty close to the Mercedes. My first lap in Q3 was really good and I knew there was probably not much more. There was maybe a tenth of a second in it if there was a perfect lap.

"We might have different tyres available for us for the race and hopefully that makes it interesting."

  6. 'I didn't lock up'

    f1

Lewis Hamilton, who was short and sweet with his response in the post-qualifying news conference, said: "It has been a good weekend. I had no problems. I had the pace today just didn't finish it off. I didn't lock up.

"It should be a good day for Mercedes tomorrow."

  7. Robserg: "Great feeling."

    Rosberg

Nico Rosberg, who qualified on pole: "Yeah it was a great feeling, it was a great lap, but I also had extra fuel, in case I needed to do a third lap."

  8. Post update

That's Nico Rosberg's 27th career pole, fifth of the season and third at Hockenheim. It also means he is level with Lewis Hamilton in qualifying: 6-6.

  9. Congrats Nico

  10. Post update

Just to emphasise how impressive that lap was from Nico Rosberg, Mercedes technical boss Paddy Lowe says he was carrying more fuel than Lewis Hamilton.

Nico Rosberg is all smiles as the top three pose for the cameras. The German then laps up the applause from his compatriots.

So far so good for the German. A clean sweep of practice and then keeping it together to take pole position with the one shot he had.

  13. Rosberg nailed it

    Tom Clarkson

    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

Disappointing from Lewis but credit where's credit due, Rosberg only had one lap and he nailed it.

    Lewis Hamilton

    Allan McNish

BBC Radio 5 live Formula 1 analyst

Hamilton locked up which will have lost him some time.

  18. Post update

...and he can't beat Nico Rosberg's time!

  19. Post update

Meanwhile, Felipe Massa goes P6 with his lap.

Lewis Hamilton is on his lap now, but he runs wide at the first corner, and locks up a couple of corners later. It's looking like a bit of a messy lap so far...

  20. Post update

...and it is a 1:14.363. Provisional pole but just a tenth of a second quicker than Lewis Hamilton.
