  3. 'We are working to have a strong squad'

    Brighton 0-3 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, speaking to Sky: "A great performance by Juan Mata. He was the one who got on the ball and calmed us down. He was composed. He more or less creates the first goal himself. I am never surprised when he plays like this.

"He has been around the block and knows football. He does his work and is at the back stick to shield the ball from Dan Burn at a corner in the second half.

"We needed the first 20-25 minutes to get our confidence and get on the ball. We have worked on set pieces. You keep a clean sheet and this is important for a back four."

On Paul Pogba: "We wanted to put him on for 25-30 minutes for a work-out. The game was there for him. Paul and Marcus (Rashford) found some good positions."

On transfers: "I can't give you any news. We are working with what we have got. We have a big squad. We changed 10 players from Saturday. If there is any update, we will let you know.

"I don't comment on other teams' players. I can't concern myself with other clubs. I know the club is working well and hard to have a strong squad as possible. Sometimes speculation is there and we can't control that."

  4. Post update

Norwich defender Ben Godfrey is the latest name linked with that vacancy...

  5. 'Everton still need a centre-half'

    Everton 4-1 West Ham

    Leon Osman

Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

On whether Everton need to add players in the final days of the transfer window...

I think you would have to say yes.

You have Lucas Digne playing as a centre-half tonight and Mason Holgate will be out for a few months - so Everton are certainly short in the centre-half position.

It's unfortunate that they might also have to do without Richarlison for a couple of weeks. It will be interesting to see how Carlo Ancelotti tries to deal with that.

  6. 'Van de Beek broke down Brighton's defence'

    Brighton 0-3 Manchester United

    Steve Sidwell

Former Chelsea midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

    Donny van de Beek

There were elements of the game tonight where it was compact and tight. There were moments Donny van de Beek picked out pockets of space just off the striker and he broke down Brighton's defence tonight three or four times - especially for the goal.

There are so many weapons in the arsenal now that you can't play Van de Beek, Pogba, Mata, Fernandes in every game - but the tools are there now for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to bring players off the bench.

  7. '3-0 is harsh'

    Brighton 0-3 Manchester United

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Graham Potter: "It was a tight game until the second goal, or Dean Henderson's save at 1-0 was key. Then they bring on Rashford and Pogba which made life difficult.

"The first goal is not a good one, we have to do better there, it's as simple as that.

"We were in the game, 3-0 is a bit harsh."

  9. 'We're stretched but we must keep going'

    Burnley 0-3 Manchester City

    Sean Dyche

Burnley manager Sean Dyche speaking to Sky Sports: "We thought we would have to put a strong side out, we’re stretched and we’re trying to rest people but we can’t really because we’ve got to keep going.

"Manchester City are a good outfit, I know they’ve got a few injuries themselves but they still put out some very good players out there and they delivered a performance to win the game."

  10. Post update

    Everton 4-1 West Ham

Dominic Calvert-Lewin became the first Everton player to score a hat-trick in the League Cup since Paul Rideout vs Lincoln City in September 1993.

And we all know what he went on to do...

  12. 'Dias will be an incredible player'

    Burnley 0-3 Manchester City

    Manchester City

More from Guardiola on Manchester City's transfer business this week which saw Ruben Dias arrive and Nicolas Otamendi depart: "I have to thank Nicolas Otamendi, part of the incredible success we have had in recent years. The season we won the league with 100 points he was incredible. He played with a broken ankle, with 20 stitches, he had a great mentality so I wish him and his family all the best. He will be one of the things I will always remember about this club.

"We know Ruben Dias’s personality and I am sure he will be an incredible player for the next six or seven years. We’re very happy to have him. Our back four are now a young team. We start training tomorrow and get going as quick as possible."

  13. 'I have football left in my legs'

    Brighton 0-3 Man Utd

    Manchester United

    Juan Mata

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata, speaking to Sky Sports: "Another good night, I think we played good today. We knew they would play from the back. They try to play attractive football. They changed the system in the game, so you have to be alert. But we created chances and had more to kill the game."

On the first goal: "I tried to put the ball to the area where we bring two or three players to head. It was a great header by Scotty and important to score in the first half."

On his goal: "Very clever assist from Donny. He is a very clever player. He finds pockets of space and understands football in the way I like."

On the Carabao Cup: "It means a trophy. We want to lift trophies for our fans. We want to do it again. We try to win every game. This is different this year with the early stage.

"I feel good physically and mentally and have a passion for the game. I have a lot of football left in my legs and my mind."

  14. 'We are still far from our best'

    Burnley 0-3 Manchester City

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to Sky Sports: "[It was] important we didn’t concede and the team was good in general. We are still far away from our best because we’re not training much. We have a lot of players out, six because of Covid and four injuries.

"But step by step when we have all the squad we will get better. I hope we won’t be far away from the people up front but we are in the quarter-finals of this competition again so it’s good.

"When you lose a game the most important thing is the next one. Firstly, because if you lose in this competition, you’re out. Secondly because we have just two games before the international break and some players need to play, we didn’t have a pre-season so that’s important we have to give them minutes.

"Ferran Torres needs to improve some things, because we haven’t trained much or spoke much. He has the skills, he’s young, he’s aggressive he can play on both sides, he’s so clever it’s not cross to cross he is always watching what’s happening."

  15. Can we play you every week?

    Burnley 0-3 Manchester City

    Manchester City

    Manchester City

Manchester City have lost just one of their last 25 matches against Burnley in all competitions (W18 D6), winning each of the last six by an aggregate score of 23-1.

  16. 'Richarlison a huge miss for Ancelotti'

    Everton 4-1 West Ham

    Leon Osman

Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Considering how Everton have started the season so well you want to get through games without injuries - and certainly not your most crucial players.

Allan has been terrific since he came in. I think Fabian Delph could cover the role Allan has been playing for a week or two - but Richarlison will be a huge miss. He is a huge part of what Everton do.

He has pace, guile and ability and he'll be a big miss for Carlo Ancelotti for however long he is missing for.

It was an impact injury. Allan's injury looked like a pulled muscle, but Richarlison appeared to twist his ankle. Only time will tell the significance of those injuries.

  17. Who's in the last eight?

There are three ties still to be played tomorrow night but here's who has qualified for the quarter-finals draw.

    Manchester City

    Manchester United
