  1. Back to reality

    What could/should have been eh?

Well, thanks for joining us for a few hours and bringing a bit of structure to these crazy, crazy times.

Who needs an expensive office when you can do a live text commentary from your kitchen table.

Stay safe, stay distant, and soon we'll all be together again bemoaning the positional sense of Ben Mee or some other triviality.

    See you soon!

  2. The new Pele?

    Sven-Goran Eriksson

After the match England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said Wayne Rooney is the greatest teenage talent to emerge since Pele.

Rooney, 18, grabbed two goals as England beat Croatia 4-2 to make the last eight of Euro 2004.

Eriksson said: "I don't remember anyone making such an impact on a tournament since Pele in the 1958 World Cup.

"I don't really know what to say. He's absolutely fantastic, not only at scoring goals but he plays football - he's a complete footballer."

He's really come on as a pundit...

    Croatia 2-4 England

This is the first time England progress beyond the group phase when the European Championship is staged outside of England.

    Blimey. Portugal next!

  5. Post update

Pretty incredibly, this victory marks only the second time England have won successive European Championship matches. The only other occasion was Euro 96 when they edged Scotland (2-0) and Netherlands (4-1).

    Croatia 2-4 England

  7. Post update

    Croatia 2-4 England

The England fans are in fine voice. Michael Owen's relative struggles continue as he can't quite squeeze a shot off.

  8. Post update

    Croatia 2-4 England

England will play hosts Portugal in the last eight then. More drama awaits I'm sure.

    Croatia 2-4 England

David James flaps at a corner, believe it or not, and he then makes a very good save from the loose ball to beat away Dado Prso's effort.

  10. Post update

    Croatia 2-4 England

England ending a big game with a central midfield of Phil Neville and Ledley King. A good pub quiz question for future years.

    Croatia 2-4 England

Here we go, England's women's manager replaces the Chelsea boss for the last few minutes.

Jel: Scholes on the left, Gerrard on the left, Lampard wearing 11. If Giggs played for England we would rule the world!

  13. Post update

He was one of Svens' trusted subs wasn't he, along with Phil Neville and Owen Hargreaves. Never let England down, apart from in that penalty shootout I suppose.

    Scored six goals for England.

Callum Chadwick: I think I’m a bit too young to remember anything noteworthy from Darius Vassell’s career, but was he actually any good?

  15. Post update

    Croatia 2-4 England

Croatia fans look disconsolate now, but still look excellent thanks to the majesty of that chequered kit.

Ledley King finds Darius Vassell with a great pass. Not bad for a man with one knee.

    Spoiler alert...

Warren, Oxford: A big factor in England not winning a tournament with this generation was the injury to Rooney in the 1sf half of the quarter final vs Portugal at 1-0 to England. Somehow the ref gave a free kick to Portugal even though the Portuguese defender trod on Rooney's foot.

  17. Post update

    Croatia 2-4 England

    Joe Royle

    Ipswich Town manager

    Frank Lampard

That was always the danger for Croatia, gambling by throwing men forwards and they've got hit by breakers from midfield.

Steven Gerrard was almost in a moment before and Frank Lampard does what he's done all season for Chelsea.

  18. GOAL - Croatia 2-4 England

    Frank Lampard (79 mins)

That really should be game over now!

Well played Darius Vassell, a hot kinfe through aging Croat butter as he charges through the middle.

David Beckham finds Frank Lampard, he shrugs off a tackle and then just toe-punts home from the edge of the area.

Chris White: How great is it seeing a ‘live’ match on tv, even better not remembering the result. Memories of how life used to be and if we are all careful how it will be again soon. Literally ‘Come on England!’
