  1. Carroll was 'desperate' to return, says boss Steve Bruce

    Newcastle boss Steve Bruce says striker Andy Carroll was "desperate" to return to the club where he began his career.

    Carroll, 30, re-signed for the Magpies on transfer deadline day despite being sidelined after ankle surgery.

    The Englishman, who was released by West Ham United at the end of last season, left Newcastle for Liverpool for £35m in January 2011.

    "If he stays fit, then a fit Andy Carroll is as good as you're going to get," said Bruce.

  2. Leroy Sane to have surgery next week

    A minor update on Leroy Sane.

    The Manchester City winger will have knee surgery in Barcelona on either Tuesday or Wednesday next week before beginning the long road to recovery.

    The season will be in its final weeks before Sane is expected to be fit again.

    David Silva has been named Manchester City's new captain.

    Rather than pick Vincent Kompany's replacement himself, City manager Pep Guardiola waited for all his players to return to training before letting them decide in a private vote.

    The outcome was Silva, who will leave the club at the end of the season, getting the captain's armband.

    More on Joao Cancelo: “He came and gave us something we didn’t have. Without him it would have been so difficult to achieve.

    “His physicality is beyond normal, for Kyle it’s important to have good competition, and with Cancelo he will have that.

    “They have to fight for the position; Cancelo can play on the left too. The guy who is confident has more chances to play. Right now Kyle is the one.”

    “In the start it was not easy, they lost the first three of four games but he’s a calm person and the board supported him, he made good results at the end of the season, Tottenham, Watford.

    “The quality in his teams and the quality of the players up front, they’ve got many good players. It’s the first game. It’s going to happen. Playing away is tricky but we are ready.”

    “I didn’t think about him leaving. Always I said he’s our player and he didn’t tell me he wanted to leave, always I thought he was ours. In the final he played.

    “It’s bad news as in three seasons we’ve had three ACLs. He’s young and he will recover well hopefully in terms of the surgery next week. All the people will help him, he will feel alone and we help him to feel as comfortable as possible.”

  9. Pep Guardiola expects Sane to miss 'six or seven months'

    Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expects winger Leroy Sane to miss "six or seven months" with a knee injury.

    The Germany international, 23, tore his anterior cruciate ligament in Sunday's Community Shield win over Liverpool.

    Sane, who had been linked with a summer move to Bayern Munich, went off after just 13 minutes at Wembley.

    "It is incredibly bad news," said Guardiola before the champions' Premier League opener at West Ham on Saturday (12:30 BST kick-off).

    "I don't know how long he will be out. Normally this kind of injury is six or seven months - hopefully February or March."
