Live Reporting

By Emlyn Begley

All times stated are UK

  1. Goodnight

So that's the end of the season now for the Republic of Ireland, who are five points clear at the top of Group D.

Next up is Switzerland in Dublin on 5 September.

    Group D

That's the end of this live page now, thanks for joining me today.

    Read the match report here.

  2. Post update

The Republic of Ireland have lost just one of their last nine games (W3 D5), keeping six clean sheets.

  3. Post update

Robbie Brady scored his first goal in 17 international matches. His last was in a friendly against Oman in August 2016 in Robbie Keane's farewell game.

  4. 'I'm thrilled and delighted'

Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy to Sky Sports: "I'm wondering why people are thinking I should be miserable. I'm thrilled and delighted.

"Am I happy with the performance? Not really. We've had about 30 shots and couldn't score. But we got two and they didn't get any. That's 10 points in my pocket.

"I don't think people like being positive. Thank goodness I do. The players seemed a bit sad and I'm like 'hold on a moment'. We played better against Georgia and Denmark than we did against Gibraltar. But we've dispatched them twice.

"We ought to be better but it's not easy against a belligerent team. We could be better with our final ball and shots. I'd have taken 1-0.

"It'd be lovely for David McGoldrick [to score]. I'd love to see Sean Maguire and Scott Hogan play more games. A lot of our strikers have had long-term injuries. It was great to see Robbie Brady score. He found it hard on Friday physically and he's delighted to score today.

"I'm relieved and happy with 10 points."

  5. Post update

Gibraltar have lost all 23 of their European Championships and World Cup qualifying matches, conceding 109. They have failed to score in their last seven.

  6. Post update

Conor Hourihane created eight goalscoring opportunities. Only Miralem Pjanic for Bosnia against Armenia in March (nine) has created more in a Euro 2020 qualifying match.

  7. Post update

The Republic of Ireland have won all four of their games with Gibraltar by an aggregate score of 14-0.

Half of those 14 goals came in their first meeting.

  8. Post update

Poland are in control of Group G with a 4-0 win over second-placed Israel.

Austria beat North Macedonia 4-1 for a second win in a row. Slovenia thumped Latvia 5-0 for their first win of the group.

  9. McGoldrick didn't expect to be given goal

Republic of Ireland striker David McGoldrick tells Sky Sports he didn't expect to get awarded the opening own goal.

"Not really. I knew it was going wide. I tried to run away and celebrate to persuade Uefa to give me the goal.

The three points is the main thing. Everyone expected us to get a load of goals. I should have scored.

"But the main thing is 10 points from four games.

"I'm getting frustrated [to not score] but I need to keep going. I was always told as long as you get chances... you get worried if you stop getting chances. Strikers are judged on goals. I'd love to stand here with a goal for Ireland on my CV."

  10. Post update

Republic of Ireland captain Seamus Coleman to Sky Sports: "We're a bit disappointed with the way we performed at times. We'd like to have been better at times. But we won.

"We just tried to force it too much and score with every attack instead of being patient and breaking them down.

"You've got to respect Gibraltar. We knew it would be a difficult game. but we could have been better."

  11. Post update

Spain are five points clear in Group F after a 3-0 win over second-placed Sweden.

Romania are level with Sweden on seven points after a 4-0 win in Malta. Norway beat Scandi rivals Faroe Islands 2-0 for their first win.

  12. Post update

Republic of Ireland goalscorer Robbie Brady to Sky Sports: "I'm delighted to come on and make a difference. It's been a while since I scored. Obviously I was disappointed not to start.

"It's been a frustrating year. Hopefully it'll be a good one next year

"Gibraltar are a totally different team to the one we faced in the last campaign, they're more compact and organised. They made it difficult at times but didn't cause us too many problems.

"We could have taken a bit more care and scored a few more. We definitely need to tidy up in the next games if we want to push on."

  13. Post update

Ukraine are six points clear at the top of Group B after beating second-placed (!) Luxembourg 1-0.

Serbia are level on points with Luxembourg after beating Lithuania 4-1.

  14. Post update

Elbasan Rashani's 92nd-minute winner gave Kosovo a famous 3-2 win in Bulgaria. That puts them one point behind England in Group A.

Czech Republic beat Montenegro 3-0 to go level on points with England at the top.

  15. Post update

Republic winger Callum Robinson to Sky Sports: "The main thing was the result. When a team come and sit back it's hard to break them down. It was a hard one, we got the win in the end.

"There was a little bit of tension towards the end but Robbie Brady's goal calmed the nerves. Now we can look forward to September's games."

  16. Post update

While we're waiting to hear from the Irish players and manager, let's see what happened elsewhere.

  17. Top of the table

This is what Group D looks like.

Pretty sweet for the Republic of Ireland. Although remember they have played three of their four easier games. And have played more games than Denmark and Switzerland.

Probably luckily for the Republic after two narrow wins over Gibraltar, head to head is used before goal difference in the Euro qualifiers.
