US co-captain Megan Rapinoe: "I'm still stressed from the game. We were under the pump a lot of the game, all the second half.

"I'm so proud of our performance, it was a huge defensive performance. It's not easy to do that, be under the pump and take your chances."

Is she thinking of the final yet?

"No, not at all. We have a very good English side, who have some good players. They strolled through their quarter-final and had an extra day, so have got some rest in their legs. We have a huge task ahead of us. They're one of the big girls of the game. We'll enjoy this tonight. All eyes towards England tomorrow."

The USA have become the second team to ever win 10 consecutive Women's World Cup games.

I read a stat about them being unbeaten in 15 - but that includes the 2011 final, which they lost to Japan on penalties, as a draw so I'm not having that.

We've got some very impressive players with England. I'm very excited about facing the number one side.

It will be another spectacle for the women's game. England are getting better and better but they’ll have to raise it again.

It's the USA tempo I'm so impressed by. England will have to raise their levels. Every USA player out there is an athlete.

In the second half USA maybe invited pressure on a bit too much and the one mistake was by Mewis, who dropped in there for the Renard goal. But there's got to be a lot of talk about that possible penalty. Any other game in this tournament, I would argue, it would have been given.

US forward Alex Morgan: "It's hard to put into words. We fought so hard and weathered the storm. The team showed heart.

"Scoring early is a dream but it's difficult because you've got 85 minutes of being up. We took another step forward with this game."

    France 1-2 USA

    Pat Nevin

It's not the prettiest football I've ever seen because they decided that once they got ahead, we'll hold what we've got and play on the break.

But go and watch the top coaches on the planet...if they do that and it works then they will be applauded for it. USA got it right, they nailed it tonight. Certainly in that midfield in the first half, the way they killed off the danger from France was brilliant.

  9. 'Tactical game'

You saw that this game was a tactical game for the USA coaching staff. They went to a defensive position early in the game and Phil Neville will know that.

  10. 'You have to give it up to France'

    France 1-2 USA

USA player of the match Megan Rapinoe: "That was quadrupley* the amount of grit [from the Spain game]. You have to give it up to France. They outplayed us in terms of having the ball. We were so good defensively. We took our chances and hit them where it hurt.

"This is what it's all about. We'd have loved to play nicer, but we now have England and we move on. This is so special to beat the host nation in the Parc des Princes; you can't ask for any more than this."

  11. 'Disappointed in Renard'

I was really disappointed in Wendie Renard's performance today. She was caught out of position for the second goal.

Ashley Burton: Great game France and the USA. Shame to see the hosts go out. Very professional performance by the U.S. Disappointed by France in the first half. Much better after the goal. First goal conceded was awful. England will need to keep Rapinoe quiet.

It's huge. It was a team within a team [at London 2012]. it was a magical experience.

    France 1-2 USA

    Pat Nevin

Once the United States got ahead, the whole game plan was to play on the break. To do that you need players who are willing to defend deep but then charge forward at full pace.

Megan Rapinoe and Tobin Heath were brilliant at that, and the work-rate from Alex Morgan was superb.

  15. Post update

Here is Wendie Renard's goal which set up that tense finale.

France had chances but at the other end USA were clinical in front of goal. That was the difference.

That's what the USA do so well. When you have the momentum, they go up the other end and punish you.

This has been one of the best atmospheres at a Women’s World Cup game I have ever experienced.

  17. 'Heartbroken fans'

    FT: France 1-2 USA

    Hope Solo

Former US goalkeeper and World Cup winner

There are a lot of heartbroken fans here tonight but this was the game we were hoping for. The only thing I wanted to see was that energy from France.

They kicked on when they got the goal but I wanted to see it from the start.
