  2. 'My players put their bodies on the line'

    FT: South Africa 0-1 China

South Africa captain Janine van Wyk: "It's disappointing for us to walk away with defeat after a hard-fought game. A lack of concentration led to a goal. It was pretty equal. We knew it was going to be a tough match against a Chinese team.

"We could not have done more. I can just say it was a fantastic performance from every single player.

"We are really getting closer to tougher opponents."

    Coach Desiree Ellis:

"They were once again magnificent. We conceded from a set-piece. We lost concentration there. We had ample opportunities.

"We said it would be a battle and like a final. Tonight we showed we are getting close. We gave as good as they gave.

"My players put their bodies on the line."

Niyi: A positive to take away for the South Africans' is their solidity in defence. It has been admirable since the African Cup of Nations. And they have a young team. I see a good and future.

  6. FULL-TIME

    South Africa 0-1 China

The game comes to an end, and South Africa's first World Cup journey is probably over.

  7. Post update

    South Africa 0-1 China

Yang Li is bearing down on goal once more, with the game in her grasp, but Bambanani Mbane puts her body on the line by sliding in to block well.

    Brilliant defending.

  9. Post update

    South Africa 0-1 China

Remarkably, it's end to end in the final few minutes of this Group B tie.

Thembi Kgatlana is restricted the room to burst into at one end before Kaylin Swart saves well from Yang Li who is one-on-one with the keeper.

  12. Post update

    South Africa 0-1 China

That's the closest we have come to a goal in this half as PSG forward Wang Shuang whips a free-kick into the South Africa box, only for a yellow shirt to head the ball onto the roof of the net.

  13. SUBSTITUTION

    South Africa 0-1 China

Fatigue has definitely started to set in with under 10 minutes remaining of normal time and both sides make their final changes.

Yang Li replaces Wang Yan for China, while Linda Motlhalo enters the fray in place of Refiloe Jane for South Africa.

  14. SUBSTITUTION

    South Africa 0-1 China

In the melee of all of that, China made their second substitution as Yao Wei comes on for goalscorer Li Yang.

  15. Post update

    South Africa 0-1 China

South Africa appeal for a penalty but the referee is unmoved.

The ball is nodded on to Thembi Kgatlana, who loses her footing before slicing the shot, but the ball makes contact with the top of Lin Yuping's chest.

Kgatlana is joined by her teammates in an appeal but that was never a penalty.

  18. Post update

    South Africa 0-1 China

Thembi Kgatlana is playing on the shoulder of the last defender but she has to be careful not to stray offside when her side attempt to go long.

The forward is penalised that time as South Africa continue to look for their pacy striker.
