  1. Owls of despair as Boro blaze on

    FT: Sheff Wed 1-2 Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough will begin the weekend top of the Championship table then, having travelled to 'fortress' Hillsborough and won against an in-form Sheffield Wednesday.

Moments of quality from Mo Besic and Britt Assombalonga gave Boro the lead, and not even a fightback and superb goal from Adam Reach could deny them the points.

Wednesday will have to go again. Boro can relax and watch their top six rivals slug it out tomorrow.

So can you. Get yourself back here to BBC Sport for tomorrow's action.

    Until then, good night.

    Mo Besic and Britt Assombalonga
  2. 'It's the final third where games are won'

    FT: Sheff Wed 1-2 Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough boss Tony Pulis told Sky Sports

"The lads were really keen to put performance in, we were poor against Forest, and I take a bit of blame for that, maybe I overworked them.

"They responded tonight. We played really well for 77 mins and controlled the game but then they scored a brilliant goal.

"The players have real quality but it's that final third where games are won and lost and that's something since I've come to football is where I've been critical. Got to get better.

"I think it would be brilliant for Britt Assombalonga to get 20 goals, but we want everyone to score goals, we have two centre-halves who should be scoring more goals. We've got someone technically brilliant like Mo Besic, he needs to be scoring more than two or three goals a season."

  3. Post update

    FT: Sheff Wed 1-2 Middlesbrough

Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay told Sky Sports:

"Out of possession we didn't have the game in control, we created two or three good chances, and then made two mistakes and Middlesbrough took advantage of those mistakes.

"When we came back to 2-1 we tried everything to make it 2-2, the ball was on the line right at the end, but overall in possession we were not good enough.

"Middlesbrough were very strong in defence, and it was really tough."

  4. Post update

    FT: Sheff Wed 1-2 Middlesbrough

Perhaps they're still getting their breaths back, but Tony Pulis and Jos Luhukay are both taking their time with the post-match.

We'll be bringing you their comments soon, before we dip off for the night.

To finish, the Rams and the Blades pit Derbyshire and South Yorkshire together in the late game between Derby and Sheffield United.

    Middlesbrough celebrate

Was that the sign of a promotion-calibre team there from Middlesbrough? To go to an intimidating venue, against an in-form team, get the goals they need and then shut out the fightback. Decent ingredients.

Wednesday might wish they had been a bit more aggressive earlier on, so that they weren't chasing. Hard though, when a team like Boro dictated the pace as they did.

  7. 'Boro needed win'

    FT: Sheff Wed 1-2 Middlesbrough

Boro striker Britt Assombalonga told Sky Sports: "It was good that we got the win - we needed that after the loss to Forest.

"Coming to Sheffield Wednesday and winning is good for us."

  8. 'We needed to prove ourselves'

    FT: Sheff Wed 1-2 Middlesbrough

Boro goalscorer Mo Besic told Sky Sports: "It was a really important win, especially after the last game when we played really badly against Nottingham Forest.

"We needed to prove ourselves and we did that today."

    Sheff Wed 1-2 Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough exhale at the end of a desperately tense encounter which came to life late on after a tepid and turgid opening 45.

Boro did enough, Mo Besic and Britt Assombalonga scoring in the second-half, and not even another showstopper from Adam Reach could deny the Teessiders the win they wanted to go top of the table.

Wednesday fought hard, but perhaps only really opened up when the game had all but gone. They remain in the top six for now, might be unseated tomorrow. But it's still early days, their form has been encouraging.

    Middlesbrough celebrate

    Sheff Wed 1-2 Middlesbrough

    Sheff Wed v Middlesbrough

My word it's like a ruck at the foot of the Twickenham posts as the ball sails across to the back-stick.

Wild, wild stuff. Players diving in for dear life. It's no goal. The net was gaping. Someone had to stick it in but it was desperation.

  11. Post update

    Sheff Wed 1-2 Middlesbrough

Wednesday desperate now... Atdhe Nuhiu wins a corner...

  12. Post update

    Sheff Wed 1-2 Middlesbrough

Wednesday get a throw on the right. Tom Lees pumps a cross into the back post... heads go up!

Darren Randolph fouled... free-kick Boro. Bit soft perhaps that...

  13. Post update

    Sheff Wed 1-2 Middlesbrough

Dael Fry heads away. Liam Palmer reloads... Boro head clear. Out of play for a throw.

Boro send on big Danny Batth for Mo Besic. Clear message from Tony Pulis. SHUT THEM OUT.

    Sheff Wed 1-2 Middlesbrough

    Wednesday corner...

  15. Post update

    Sheff Wed 1-2 Middlesbrough

Boro pump it long, playing percentages.

Ball falls to Mo Besic, who drags his shot wide. Into the last 30 seconds...

    Sheff Wed v Boro

Wednesday look as though they're throwing the kitchen sink at Boro, as Barry Bannan's free-kick is cleared but Michael Hector recycles and launches his cross in.

Boro clear and break, Mo Besic taking the ball forward and then releasing George Saville - who's chopped down.

Free-kick. Not what Wednesday need nor want.

  17. Post update

    Sheff Wed 1-2 Middlesbrough

Boro players cry out for a card after George Saville hits the deck following a coming together with Joey Pelupessy. Free-kick is all they're getting.

Then Pelupessy and George Friend are involved. Boro's skipper gets the yellow card.

Free-kick, decent position. Time ticking away...

  18. Post update

    Sheff Wed 1-2 Middlesbrough

Unsurprisingly, Hillsborough is alive with noise and energy now as Wednesday get the bit between their teeth.

Steven Fletcher chases a teasing ball, looks like it's knocked behind by Boro, but the decision goes against the hosts.

Boro withdraw Stewart Downing and send on George Saville. That's a calming kind of call from Tony Pulis, someone to sit in midfield and take the sting out.

  19. GOAL: Sheff Wed 1-2 Middlesbrough

    Adam Reach

Adam Reach scores for Sheff Wed

Right at the end of this game, finally Wednesday and their talismanic ex-Teessider Adam Reach have a goal to stir the souls and push for a point here.

From the free-kick, Barry Bannan clipped a free-kick in that was only half-cleared.

Reach watched it drop all the way before coolly flashing a volley past Darren Randolph, picking his spot perfectly, to reduce arrears.

Game over? More like game on.
