  1. Time to go

    It's time to head home.

I depart with memories of a decent game at St James' Park but there's more football coming your way on the BBC Sport website.

There was a fair dose of controversy between Newcastle and Wolves, but Boca Juniors and River Plate in the Copa Libertadores final second leg promises so much more.

Kick-off is at 19:30 GMT and we have live text commentary here.

    Until next time...

Sim Jolly: Like every player/manager get assessed on their performance, does anyone ever question Mike Dean on his shoddy decisions?

  3. 'We were lucky'

    Newcastle 1-2 Wolves

Wolves boss Nuno Espírito Santo, speaking to Sky Sports: "A late win. Enthusiasm disguises things - we didn't do the best performance. We allowed Newcastle to put us behind. We didn't win our duels or manage the possession of the ball.

"A draw was clearly the right result. The red card changes the game. We were lucky to beat them in the end.

On DeAndre Yedlin's red card: "It's too difficult for me to judge because I'm on the other side of the pitch."

On Ayoze Perez's penalty claim from Willy Boly's challenge: "For me that was a dispute of the ball. Don't always ask me about the referee please, it's a tough job.

"You are asking me always about the referee. He's always deciding what he sees.

"It was a tough game in the momentum where we are - everyone thinks everything was solved after Chelsea but that's not true. At the same time we never went out of the game."

Dan Bell: VAR can’t come soon enough. Wolves would have been down to 10 men.

  5. 'We need VAR now!'

    Newcastle 1-2 Wolves

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez, speaking to Match of the Day: "It was key to the game - the red card and the elbow on Ayoze Perez. We need VAR now.

"In this game it would have changed everything.

"We were doing enough to control the game. How can you explain those decisions to all our fans? We did everything we could do for winning this game.

On DeAndre Yedlin's red card for fouling Diogo Jota on the edge of the area: "You can guarantee to me that the player in the corner of the box can score in the top corner every time? It cannot be a red card.

"We have lost three points today and we deserve to win."

  6. 'Red card was right'

    Newcastle 1-2 Wolves

Wolves forward Diogo Jota, speaking to Sky Sports: "All games are very hard to play. We had to fight until the end."

On DeAndre Yedlin's red card: "I think it's right - I win the ball and he holds me so it's a foul."

  7. 'Wolves did just enough'

    Newcastle 1-2 Wolves

    Chris Waddle

Ex-Spurs and England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

Newcastle have been hard done by but they have to learn to take their chances.

Wolves have played and will play much better than that. But they've done just enough.

  8. 'They don't deserve that win'

    Newcastle 1-2 Wolves

    Newcastle United

Newcastle forward Ayoze Perez, speaking to Sky Sports: "They don't deserve that win.

"We wanted to go forward and we wanted to get the win. We struggled against West Ham but today we improved a lot.

"We did not deserve to lose, it was a good performance but it wasn't enough. Little things make the difference and today those went against us."

On DeAndre Yedlin's red card: "I'm not saying if it's a red card or not, but I'm pretty sure if it had been at the other end it wouldn't have been a red."

On the Willy Boly elbow incident: "I don't know what we have to do to get a penalty but we just have to keep going.

"The guy elbowed me really hard straight in my nose but the referee said it was the ball that hit me not the elbow even though I was bleeding."

  9. Wolves move up to 10th

    Newcastle 1-2 Wolves

Wolves started the day 13th in the the Premier League. They end it 10th - four points behind Manchester United.

Meanwhile, Newcastle stay 15th - three points above the relegation zone - after a seventh top-flight home defeat.

  10. 'We never stop'

    Newcastle 1-2 Wolves

Wolves goalscorer Matt Doherty, speaking to Sky Sports: "Scoring with almost the last kick of the game gives them no chance to get back into the game - so it's pretty special that way.

"Once the keeper saved Jota's shot I can't really miss it - it's pretty special."

On Martin Dubravka's earlier save from his shot: "When it gets that late you think the game's gone but it just shows that we never stop."

  11. Post update

    Newcastle 1-2 Wolves

    Matt Doherty loves away games:

6 October: winner at Crystal Palace

30 November: opening goal at Cardiff

9 December: late, late winner at Newcastle

  12. 'Wolves just about deserve win'

    Newcastle 1-2 Wolves

    Karl Henry

Former Wolves midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

I think it was a good, solid away performance from Wolves - they just about deserved their win.

Wolves play that wing-back system as well as any team I've seen. Matt Doherty has been phenomenal this season and a very good player since he signed.

  13. Post update

    Newcastle 1-2 Wolves

That was a terrific game of football.

Total commitment by both sets of players.

Rafael Benitez will be furious his 10 men came away with no reward.

Standby for a Rafa rant at Mike Dean!

    Newcastle 1-2 Wolves

Wolves are going back to the Black Country with all three points!

  15. Post update

    Newcastle 1-2 Wolves

    Chris Waddle

Ex-Spurs and England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

You've got to feel for Newcastle. They probably should have shut up shop 10 minutes ago and they look out on their feet.

Jota weaves his way through the Newcastle defence, it's a decent save from Martin Dubravka btu Matt Dohery was there to head it in.

  16. GOAL - Newcastle 1-2 Wolves

    Matt Doherty

    Wolverhampton Wanderers' Matt Doherty

The most dramatic end to a dramatic game.

No Newcastle player puts in a challenge on the advancing Diogo Jota and his shot is parried by Martin Dubravka into the path of Matt Doherty who is free to head into an empty net.

Despair for Rafa Benitez and his players!

    Wolverhampton Wanderers' Matt Doherty
  17. 'Newcastle struggle in final third'

    Newcastle 1-1 Wolves

    Chris Waddle

Ex-Spurs and England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

The only fear I have for Newcastle this season is a lack of goals. I think they're good enough to stay up and they're well organised but they struggle in the final third.

  18. Post update

    Newcastle 1-1 Wolves

    What. On. Earth!

Martin Dúbravka comes charging out of his penalty area and heads the ball straight to a Wolves player.

    Newcastle escape. Very lucky!

    Newcastle United's Martin Dubravka
  19. Post update

    Newcastle 1-1 Wolves

This has been a decent effort by Newcastle.

They've played for more than half an hour with 10 men. Will they come away with a crucial point?

    Five minutes of additional time!

    Newcastle 1-1 Wolves

Another late roll of the dice by Rafa Benitez.

    Kenedy on for Christian Atsu.

He needs to get a hurry on. There's not much time left.
