  2. 'What a man, what a player and what a captain'

    Alan Hansen

Former Scotland and Liverpool defender on MOTD

Liverpool won a truly great FA Cup final played in a great spirit - but without one man West Ham would have had the trophy in their dressing room and would have been celebrating.

This was one of the classic Cup finals and it is desperately unfortunate that they should lose on penalties.

West Ham were the better side and should have won, but Liverpool had Steven Gerrard and that is why a very good season is now a great one for Rafael Benitez's side.

What a man, what a player and what a captain.

  3. 'A magnificent final'

    .

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, speaking to Garth Crooks: "It was difficult to say we deserved to win or the other team.

"It was a magnificent final. We knew that they could score goals but that we could also.

"We needed to keep going but after 63 games it was really difficult."

  5. 'Football the winner'

    Mark Lawrenson

    BBC Sport football expert

If there was ever a game where both teams deserved a replay it was today. It was really harsh on West Ham, who were brilliant but so were Liverpool. Congratulations to Liverpool but football was the real winner today.

  6. Watch: Liverpool lift the trophy

What a brilliant performance it was from Steven Gerrard today - it's only right he lifted the trophy.

  10. 'A crazy game'

Goalkeeper Jose Reina said: "It was a crazy game but the most important thing is that the trophy goes to Liverpool.

"It was a bad performance by me at the start but goalkeepers live in a small land between mistakes and saves.

"I needed to keep going and I was lucky because penalties are a lottery."

  11. 'I will be ready'

And some good news for England ahead of the World Cup this summer as Steven Gerrard says: "I'm OK, I've got a load of cramp but I have a couple of weeks rest and I will be ready."

  12. 'We had a never say die attitude'

Garth Crooks has grabbed a word with Steven Gerrard on the pitch.

The Liverpool captain says: "West Ham were brilliant, they gave us a really good game but we had a never-say-die attitude and we stuck in there. Our best chance was on penalties as we did not have any energy left.

"We feel as though we have the better goalkeeper on penalties. He has a great record and made a fantastic save at the end of extra time."
