  1. 'Karius mistakes are with him for life'

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand speaking on BT Sport:"I'd have gone off on a stretcher [if I'd tried Gareth Bale's bicycle kick]. Zidane's was great but that one from Gareth Bale... we were sat here gobsmacked.

"There'll be kids who say 'I was here' when they remember that goal from Bale. It makes people just jump out of their seats."

Ex-Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson on BBC Radio 5 live: "This is a great achievement, but no, this Real Madrid is not one of the great sides. Not as the good as the Barcelona side with Xavi, Andres Iniesta, and Lionel Messi, it wasn't and isn't as good as that."

Ex Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard speaking on BT Sport: "On a human level you can feel sadness for Loris Karius.

"That's with him for life now. Mistakes like this are not for this level, the Champions League final. The first one, which kind of changed the momentum of the game, I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

"It's a horrible moment for him. he needs some big support from his team-mates now. He didn’t mean that but it’s cost them the game."

Former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard speaking on BT Sport: "I’ve won one and lost one. You don’t remember the ones you lose. At the end of the day those two mistakes have been pivotal to the result.

"Liverpool have played well tonight. Losing Mo Salah had a psychological effect on everyone and Madrid came good from there.

"We spoke about experience before the game, know-how on the big stage and the Madrid players being more switched on. The first goal is a keeper in a rush.

"It's a rush of blood to the head, all he had to do was stay calm and he's made a mistake and been punished."

  3. Post update

Sadio Mane is only the fourth African player to score in a European Cup final.

He became the third Liverpool player to score 20+ goals in all competitions this season (Salah 44 goals and Firmino 27 goals). The last time that three players hit the 20-goal mark for the club in a single campaign was 1981-82 (Dalglish, McDermott and Rush).

The Senegal star needed only 11 appearances to hit 10 Champions League goals, a joint-record in the competition along with Roberto Firmino and Adriano.

  4. Post update

Liverpool became the first team in history to see three players score 10+ goals in a single Champions League season (Salah 10, Firmino 10, Mane 10).

  5. Spanish Curse

Real Madrid's triumph over Liverpool underpins Spanish sides' superiority over English teams in European finals, winning the last seven:

    2006: Sevilla 4-0 Middlesbrough

    2006: Barcelona 2-1 Arsenal

    2009: Barcelona 2-0 Man Utd

    2010: Atlético 2-1 Fulham

    2011: Barcelona 3-1 Man Utd

    2016: Sevilla 3-1 Liverpool

    2018: Real Madrid 3-1 Liverpool

  6. Joy and sadness for Xabi

  7. Post update

Gareth Bale scored just two minutes and two seconds after coming off the bench. It was the second fastest ever by a substitute in a Champions League final, after Lars Ricken for Borussia Dortmund against Juventus in 1997.

Bale is the first player ever to come on as a substitute and score twice in a European Cup final.

He is also only the second British player to score a brace in a European Cup final after Bobby Charlton for Manchester United in 1968.

  8. Ronaldo must stay - Zidane

    Real Madrid 3-1 Liverpool

Cristiano Ronaldo was coy about his future in his post match interview, saying he would release a statement in the coming days, but manager Zinedine Zidane wants him at the club.

  9. Post update

Karim Benzema has scored four goals against Liverpool in the Champions League; no player has managed more (also four for Didier Drogba).

  10. Post update

  15. 'Liverpool need better game management'

    Real Madrid 3-1 Liverpool

    Mark Lawrenson

Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I would like them to be able to see the game over the line, to manage the game. If you invite fouls you stop rhythm of the opposition, and that is what Real do. You detest it when Sergio Ramos goes down easily and his antics, but that is where our game is, where football is.

Ex Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard speaking on BT Sport: “I’m trying to get away from Rio [Ferdinand].

"There’s been interest, I’ve been speaking to Derby [about their manager's job]. I’m ambitious and I want to become a manager at some stage.

"It’s a big club with big tradition, big history. We’ll carry on speaking when I go home and we will see."

  19. Post update

Remarkably Real Madrid only conceded five fouls in that entire game - none by Sergio Ramos.

By comparison, Liverpool conceded 18 fouls.

    Cristiano Ronaldo

Amazing quotes by Cristiano Ronaldo on Spanish newspaper website Marca.

"Who was the top scorer once again?

"The Champions League should change and be called the CR7 Champions League.

"I have won five and I am the goalscorer again, so I cannot be sad."
