  1. Post update

Party time for Southampton but for Swansea, they are perching precariously above the trapdoor.

It's going to be a nervous wait to see how things pan out over the next few days,

That's it from us, scroll down for all the reaction to tonight's game and we'll see you later.

  2. 'Nine or ten teams can be relegated each season'

    FT: Swansea 0-1 Southampton

    Danny Gabbidon

Former Wales defender on BBC Radio Wales

You can throw a blanket over all of the teams from 10th down in the Premier League table and there is not much between them. The three clubs that came up from the Championship in August all look like they might be safe and that's because of the money that is available to beef up their squads. You might see more and more of this now where nine or ten teams can all be relegated each season.

  3. 'Dark arts at work'

    Swansea 0-1 Southampton

Southampton manager Mark Hughes, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was a big performance from us. I came in late to proceedings and needed to get a reaction our of players who had maybe lost their way somewhat. I have to say, since I've come in they've worked hard and even when results when against us never diminished belief.

"It is not mathematically certain. We had to come here and we had to win. If we had not won today it would have been very, very difficult for us. It is not done yet but tonight we have put ourselves in the position where we have a great chance to stay up.

"We will enjoy tonight, we got what we set out to get. A huge result, we are delighted but still got work to do."

Hughes on having to change hotel late on due to a 'virus': "We suspected that maybe some of the dark arts at work but it didn't let us affect us, in fact we used it as a motivating factor. That helped our focus and we won't be staying in the vicinity of the hotel Marriott Swansea , I think we will stick to the Vale of Glamorgan."

  4. Post update

    Swansea 0-1 Southampton

    Swansea City

Swansea boss Carlos Carvalhal on Sky Sports: "We have the feeling we deserve a bit more – minimum one point.

"We played to win, we showed everyone we played to win. Very emotional, not all the time connected. It is not easy to play these games all the time connected.

"Now we are in the position we don’t have a lot of time. We don’t know what will happen tomorrow and at the weekend we must try and do our part and try and win the game against Stoke.

"It's difficult to explain [the drop off in form] because we make chances – today, against Chelsea, against Everton, but didn't score. I never put the responsibility on our players. They play with everything and the fans gave everything.

"Now we don't have the things in our hands – it is the reality but let's see what happens. We must do our part and win the game and then wait.

"We are professional, it is not easy this situation. We must react very fast because we have a game on Sunday."

  5. 'Hughes will remain professional until after the weekend'

    FT: Swansea 0-1 Southampton

    Francis Benali

Former Southampton defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Southampton have to look into a lot of aspects moving forward. Managerial appointments, player recruitment and development of their own players are three of those issues. Ultimately the squad haven't performed as well as they should've this season. Mark Hughes has come in and done well but he will want to remain professional and confirm their survival at the weekend.

  6. Post update

    Swansea 0-1 Southampton

    Charlie Austin

Southampton striker Charlie Austin, speaking to Sky Sports: "The hard work paid off today. We knew we had to come here and win. I think I had eight or nine chances but it didn't matter who scored.

"It's massive. I have been relegated before with QPR and it's not a nice feeling. The gaffer has come in and got some belief into us."

Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy: "We knew we had to win. We are disappointed after the game at the weekend with the late goal but we got the three points and now we can look forward to the end of the season."

  7. 'We did our maximum'

    Swansea 0-1 Southampton

Swansea boss Carlos Carvalhal, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was a push to us because the boys did everything in the game. They played with a fantastic attitude. We played more long balls than normal but it is normal in this kind of situation with the emotion. The goalkeeper made two or three fantastic saves.

"I will not put the fault in my players, I never do this. I assume responsibility. It is not a question they are not good enough, we created chances. We did our maximum, the players did their maximum but we did not score for whatever reason.

"In this moment we are not relegated. Tomorrow, we don't know. Definitely we don't depend on ourselves."

  9. 'We lost an important chance'

    Swansea 0-1 Southampton

Swansea captain Federico Fernández, speaking to BBC Sport: "We know we lose a very important chance for us, now we see what happens tomorrow and then will have to win on Sunday.

"We pushed and pushed, especially in the first half. It is a difficult night for everyone. The fans were amazing tonight, we are disappointed to lose our chance."

  10. 'He has pulled off what looks like an incredible feat'

    FT: Swansea 0-1 Southampton

    Francis Benali

Former Southampton defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

    Mark Hughes

I was as nervous as anybody today and I felt helpless not being a player anymore. I played with Mark Hughes and I saw what he brought with his strong mentality, and he has taken that into his managerial career as well. He has pulled off what looks like an incredible feat in keeping them up.

Mike: Funny old game, football. Mark Hughes gets sacked by Stoke who go down; then gets the gig at Southampton who will stay up...

Sam: There is something sickening about a team celebrating probably finishing 17th like this they’ve been shocking for 7/9 months

Nick: You have to feel for Darren Moore. That’s taken the manager of the month curse to a new level. Forget losing your next game after getting the award. To lose your Premier League place is so tough
