FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

    Villa celebrate

Thanks for your company this Sunday lunchtime. If you're a Villa fan, I'm sure you'll enjoy the rest of your weekend and your week ahead!

The men in Claret and Blue move in to second in the Championship with a victory over their fierce local rivals.

Do join us again on Tuesday for more English Football League action, while the rest of today's Premier League coverage with my colleague Tom Rostance can be found here. Enjoy.

  2. Post update

FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

Blues, meanwhile, slip to 20th over the course of the weekend, below Bolton on goal-difference but staying two points above the relegation zone.

  3. Villa up to second

FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

Villa move one point above Derby, in to second, 12 points behind leaders Wolves but - crucially - in to the automatic promotion places for the first time this season.

    Top of the Championship
  4. 'Immense' Grealish - Adomah

FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

On Jack Grealish, Albert Adomah tells Sky Sports: "Since he has been back from injury, he's been immense.

"We're in the automatic promotion places now and hopefully we can stay there.

  5. Post update

FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

    Darren Carter

Ex-Birmingham City midfielder on BBC WM

Birmingham need to put today behind them because they have been well off the pace today.

Villa were well worth it today in every aspect.

It didn't really feel that Birmingham gave it a go going forward while Villa had intent and went for it.

  6. Post update

FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

    Garry Thompson

Ex-Aston Villa striker on BBC WM 95.6

Villa have gone second and a few weeks ago I couldn't see that happening, but they've got goals from right across the midfield and they've been sold defensively.

Once they got their noses in front today they never looked like losing their grip.

  7. Grealish's delight

FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

"It's always good to win a derby," Villa's man of the match, Jack Grealish, tells Sky Sports. "We'll enjoy it.

"I worked hard to get back fit and stronger [after injury] and I've done that now.

"I'm lasting longer in games and I'm performing better."

  8. FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

The Villa players lap up the applause of their fans, as Oasis' 'Don't Look Back in Anger' rings out around the ground.

  9. FULL-TIME

    Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

Aston Villa win the second city derby and go second in the Championship.

  10. RED CARD (Birmingham)

    Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

Cheikh Ndoye is shown his second yellow card after an altercation with John Terry in the Villa box, with Ndoye having tussled with Mile Jedinak.

A sour end to the game for the visitors.

  11. Post update

    Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

Villa have simply had more quality than Birmingham today.

I don't think it'll go down as one of those derby games where one side has shown more passion or desire than the other.

What we're watching here is a Villa team who look set to make a very, very strong bid for promotion this season.

  12. HITS THE WOODWORK

    Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

From the corner, Marc Roberts' looping header hits the top of the bar!

So both sides have hit the frame of the goal twice today.

  13. Post update

    Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

Sam Gallagher races on to Jota's ball over the top and wins a corner, although it appeared as though the ball had gone out.

  14. Post update

    Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

The officials have added on a minimum of four minutes.

  15. Post update

    Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

Looking for a final flourish, Birkir Bjarnason has a chance to shoot at the far post, after a good Robert Snodgrass cross, but Blues block it.

  16. SUBSTITUTION

    Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

Villa's third and final change sees Glenn Whelan replace Albert Adomah.

  17. CLOSE!

    Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

Villa almost have a third, but Robert Snodgrass slides a close-range shot just wide of the far post.

  18. Post update

    Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

Villa are five minutes away from a seventh league win in a row.

  19. SUBSTITUTION

    Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

Jack Grealish goes off, to a standing ovation. He's been class today.

Villa - who are heading second in the table now for sure - bring on Birkir Bjarnason instead.

  20. Post update

    Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City

The Villains will replay that Conor Hourihane goal in montages over and over again, for years to come.

It's the best-struck goal that this fixture has seen for a very long time.
