  1. Goodbye!

In, out, in, out. Liverpool's Champions League's destiny is back out of their control.

If Manchester City and Manchester United both win their remaining games - and like I said earlier, that's a big if - then the Reds will finish out of the top four. Again.

See if Manchester United can jump the first hurdle in their trip to Arsenal. It is happening right now!

  2. Stats of the day

    Liverpool 0-0 Southampton

    • Liverpool have drawn 0-0 home and away against the same opponent in a Premier League season for the first time since 2008/09 against Stoke
    • The Reds had 32 shots without scoring against the Saints this season – only Hull against Sunderland (33) have had more without scoring
    • Jurgen Klopp has never beaten Southampton in the Premier League (D3 L1) – indeed, he has now faced them more than any other opponent without winning
    • James Milner failed to score a Premier League penalty for the first time since November 2009 (for Aston Villa against Bolton). He had scored his previous 11 in a row
    • Fraser Forster saved his first Premier League penalty – Milner’s effort was the ninth he had faced

  5. We will keep fighting - Klopp

    Liverpool 0-0 Southampton

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to BBC Sport: "We will keep on fighting. We wish we had 72 points but we have one more than we did.  Everyone worked hard for three points. It's important we didn't conceded a goal. We defended the counter attacks much better and we could have been more creative in moments.

"There are always a lot of explanations for not scoring. We defended well. I thought the amtosphere was absolutely brilliant."

  6. I was due a penalty save - Forster

    Liverpool 0-0 Southampton

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster, speaking to BBC Sport: "It's nice to save a penalty. I was probably due a penalty save because I've conceded a few this season. You need that bit of luck."

Did you get into James Milner's mind before he took it?

"No, I don’t think so. He is obviously a world-class player and has a fantastic track record.

"We knew coming here it was important we stayed as competitive as we could and we tried to hit them on counter but couldn’t score."

  7. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Southampton

Liverpool managed 17 pot-shots at the Saints goal, with eight of them (shown by the green arrows) hitting the target.

But, as our graphic below shows, most of them were from long range. Fraser Forster was not really stretched into a save other than the impressive penalty stop from James Milner.

  8. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Southampton

Saints manager Claude Puel: "I think it was a fantastic job for us. We defended very well and with quality and good organisation.

"Perhaps we could have done better with the counter attack, but we showed good energy, spirit  and organisation.

"It was difficult for them to come into our box and for me it was a harsh penalty and a good save. It was a deserved point."

  9. Top four not over yet - Klopp

    Liverpool 0-0 Southampton

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought our performance was good enough to win. Southampton  wanted to come here and somehow get a point, or more, and I'm fine with defending.

"They did not create anything and we had a hard job to do. To play against 10 deep defending Southampton players is very difficult. We could have scored, that would have opened them up a bit. it is a point more but doesn't feel like that.

"It is not finished yet. We all have to play our games. We go to West Ham and try to win and that's all we can do. We try everything and we do not stop."

On James Milner's penalty miss: "He should not blame himself - that is football. Him scoring would have helped of course but that is not the only decisive thing today."

  10. We came up with a plan - Forster

    Liverpool 0-0 Southampton

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was alwaysgoing to be a hard game and we defended for best part of 90 minutes. It's fantastic to hang on.

"I had a little chat before the game with Stuart Taylor [team-mate] and came up with a little plan [about penalties]. Fortunately it went my way.

"I was obviously at Newcastle with James. He is a fantastic penalty taker and his record speaks for itself. Luckily it went my way.

"We wanted to be as competitive as we could as a team and make it hard for Liverpool."

  11. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Southampton

Here's a great one for you stat fans...

Liverpool have played Southampton four times this season.

Liverpool have not scored against Southampton this season.

  12. Forster did not put me off - Milner

    Liverpool 0-0 Southampton

Liverpool defender James Milner, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's very frustrating. Obviously the penalty is my fault and the fact we didn't get three points is definitely my fault. I have to live with that. Fraser is a top keeper. You have to take those chances."

What did Fraser Forster say to you before the penalty?

"I've been around long enough to make sure that doesn’t worry me. I can't do any more than hold my hands up. Southampton are a tough team to break down. We didn't play as well as we would have liked.

"The penalty was a big chance and we didn’t take it. We have to win our remaining two games and see if it's good enough."

  13. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Southampton

    David Thompson

Former Liverpool midfielder on BBC Radio Merseyside

It was disappointing for Liverpool but sometimes you've got to respect the opposition and say well done to them.

Southampton had a game plan and they stuck to it. Liverpool lacked creativity and they've lacked it all season when they've faced a team like this. They don't have the capacity on the bench to mix it up.

  14. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Southampton

Southampton did not contribute anything in an attacking sense today, but boy did they defend.

Despite not managing a single shot on target, Saints earned a point which lifts them into the top half.

  15. My fault we didn't win - Milner

    Liverpool 0-0 Southampton

James Milner is immediately collared by the television interviewers in the Anfield tunnel, and the amiable Yorkshireman, of course, obliges despite having a miserable afternoon..

I'd have been tempted to sneak down another corridor and avoid them.

"It's my fault we didn't get three points. And I have to live it," he says.

    Full quotes on the way.

  16. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Southampton

Here's why Liverpool have to rely on others now - starting with Arsenal in about 35 minutes time.

Because if Manchester City and Manchester United win all of their remaining matches - and that is a big 'if' - then Liverpool cannot finish in the top four,

  17. Post update

Reds skipper Milner shakes his head as he claps the Kop before heading down the Anfield tunnel.

His penalty miss means Liverpool's Champions League fate is out of their hands now.
