  1. Goodbye

    Gent 1-0 Tottenham

Spurs have it all to do then in the return next on Thursday, 23 February.

How will fellow English side Manchester United get on against Saint-Etienne?

You can follow that match here

We are back on Saturday for FA Cup action.

    Until then.

  2. Post update

    Gent 1-0 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham defender Eric Dier told BT Sport: "We did show more aggression than Saturday against Liverpool. I don't think we created enough chances to win.

"In the first half, they were the better of the two sides but after half-time we were better until the goal. It stopped us in our tracks. We could not get going again. They sat back and we could not get the away goal.

"When you go a goal down, you want to give everything to get back into the game. Maybe we were erratic at times and could have been a bit calmer and waited for our chance. That is something for us to work on.

"I don't see why we cannot turn it around. This team gave everything against us, we did that but lacked a bit of quality. At home we will be better."

  3. 'Spurs away form is a concern'

    Gent 1-0 Tottenham

    Bradley Allen

Ex-QPR striker at Ghelamco Arena for BBC Radio London

We have to comment Gent. Spurs huffed and puffed but they weren't able to salvage anything and they have a big task now if they want to stay in the Europa League.

It was a pretty even match overall. Both goalkeepers were kept protected with just the one real bit of quality Gent found. From then on in the home side deserved to win.

A slight cause for concern is the away performances. At home with the crowd behind them Spurs get decent results, but they need to rekindle that sparkle away from home. If they can do that then they can certainly secure Champions League football come the end of the season.

Don Uorri: Poch maybe a great trainer but tactically he still has much to learn, got it wrong 2 games in a row.

Rob Francis: Everyone needs to calm down, Spurs should win the home leg comfortably. Gent are nothing special and are 8th in the league.

Darren Holding: Once again, no Plan B for Spurs, no game changers on the bench

  5. FULL-TIME

    Gent 1-0 Tottenham

    Happy birthday Hein Vanhaezebrouck.

His Gent side beat Tottenham 1-0 in the first leg of the last-32 Europa League tie.

Make no mistake about it, the Belgian side fully deserve it.

    Gent 1-0 Tottenham

Two Gent defenders leave a bouncing ball for each other inside their own area...

    ...but get away with it.

  7. Spurs still searching for a win in Belgium

    Gent 1-0 Tottenham

    Bradley Allen

Ex-QPR striker at Ghelamco Arena for BBC Radio London

Four minutes added on and the crowd sense that this could be a famous victory for Gent.

Spurs threatened to improve and had the better of it at the start of the second half and were growing into it. That Gent goal came against the run of play and Spurs haven't been able to get back into it.

It's been really tough for them tonight.

  8. Post update

    Gent 1-0 Tottenham

Christian Eriksen blazes a shot over the crossbar.

Not good from the Spurs man.

  9. Post update

    Gent 1-0 Tottenham

Spurs try to lump it long now but the Gent backline is holding firm.

  10. Post update

    Gent 1-0 Tottenham

    Confidence or confusion?

Gent goalkeeper Lorve Kalinic is inside his own area but elects to head a cross away instead of catching it.

Into FOUR minutes of added time.

    Mauricio Pochettino

Matt: Spurs have a strong first 11, but a weak squad. Take Rose and Vertonghen out of that defence and you lose pace on the wings ,and it goes from a solid back four to laughable.

Ruby: Why are Spurs scared in Europe,we need to play our game? If they played to our strengths why aren't we exploiting theirs?

Teez: Incredibly similar to the game against Liverpool. No real bite in attack. Perhaps fatigue has set in.

  12. Post update

    Gent 1-0 Tottenham

Christian Eriksen puts a cross into Harry Kane, who tries getting a shot away from inside the area, but Samuel Gigot does well to poke the ball away.

It has been a frustrating evening for Kane and his Spurs team-mates.

  13. Post update

    Gent 1-0 Tottenham

Cute play from Dele Alli, as he flicks a ball through to Son Heung-min.

The South Korean is in the area and about to pull the trigger, but is caught offside.

    Into the last five.

David Bennett: Strong team out tonight for Spurs. I guess that means Poch will be putting out the reserves on Sunday in the FA Cup at Fulham.

Brett Davies: Wrong line-up for Spurs. Dier should be holding midfield, Dembele, Sissoko and Wanyama all too simlilar. Only one of three needed

  15. Post update

    Gent 1-0 Tottenham

    Going from bad to worse.

Spurs have made all three changes and star man Harry Kane is now hobbling.

    That's all they need.

    Harry Kane
  16. Post update

    Gent 1-0 Tottenham

Christian Eriksen's first act is to clip a shot over the crossbar.

No problem for Gent goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic, that.

Can Spurs rescue the first leg? Nine minutes in which to do it.

  17. SUBSTITUTION

    Gent 1-0 Tottenham

    Changes from each side.

Christian Eriksen on in the last 10 minutes for Spurs as Harry Winks takes his place on the bench.

For Gent, Rami Gershon enters in place of skipper Nana Asare.

  18. Post update

    Gent 1-0 Tottenham

    Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham teetering on the edge here.

Gent are quickest to every ball and playing some neat passes into each other.

Mauricio Pochettino's men have not responded well to the weekend's defeat at Liverpool.

  19. HITS THE WOODWORK

    Gent 1-0 Tottenham

Hugo Lloris saves from Danijel Milicevic

This could have been game over on the night.

Toby Alderweireld loses the ball deep inside his own half and Danijel Milicevic breaks to the edge of the box.

The Bosnian steadies himself and strikes a low shot towards the bottom corner, but Hugo Lloris is at full stretch to his left to tip the ball onto the post.

Simon Latson: Europa League: Gent v Tottenham - the only thing that is cheering Arsenal fans up at the moment.

Richard Panday: Second favourites for the Cup doesn't account for anything with Tottenham Football Club.
