  1. Thanks for joining me

    FT: Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

On an emotional day when Leeds and Newcastle fans joined together to celebrate the memory of Gary Speed at Elland Road, the two teams provided a fantastic spectacle on the pitch.

Newcastle's march towards an immediate return to the Premier League continues, but Garry Monk's Leeds look a strong unit themselves after a difficult start to the season.

Thank you once again for joining me today, and thanks too for all your interactions.

For now, you can relive all the action with Matt Newsum's match report, and we'll be back with more Championship action on Friday as Barnsley take on Nottingham Forest. Until then, goodbye.

  2. 'It was a clear-cut penalty'

    FT: Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

Leeds head coach Garry Monk on Sky Sports:

"We gave them a goal, so obviously that against a good side makes it difficult.

"There was a clear-cut penalty for us, the handball.

"I'm happy with my team's effort, obviously I'm disappointed with the result but it doesn't change anything for us.

"I think one goal would have changed the whole complexion of the game for us."

  3. 'The performance was brilliant'

    FT: Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez on Sky Sports:

"We have another clean sheet in a very difficult stadium, the performance of the team defending and attacking has been brilliant.

"It's good and all we have to do is keep doing the same thing, keep playing with the same intensity, no complacency.

"We know that until the end everything can happen, so we have to approach every game the same."

  4. Post update

    FT: Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

So what does that game tell us about both teams' promotion chances? Newcastle were excellent today, but Leeds matched the leaders for long periods of the game after the visitors had controlled the opening 30 minutes.

Perhaps the good times are on their way back for both of these two clubs?

  5. Post update

    FT: Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles on Sky Sports:

"There's a level of confidence and then there's complacency, so we don't want to get too much of either.

"We don't want to get ahead of ourselves, so we'll just prepare again for next week.

"We're just going to take it step by step."

  6. FULL-TIME: Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

The referee blows the full-time whistle, and Newcastle are five points clear at the top of the Championship.

Dwight Gayle's two goals were all that separated the two teams in a high-quality game of football.

  7. Post update

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

Three minutes of added time are all that stands between Newcastle and a ninth straight win in all competitions.

Leeds are heading for their first defeat in six games.

  8. Post update

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

Famous last words perhaps, but Newcastle look to have the points in the bag as the teams approach the final minute of the 90.

It's been a very professional performance from the Magpies, though Leeds head coach Garry Monk will have plenty of positives to take from his side's performance as well.

  9. Post update

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

Nearly a disastrous moment for Newcastle, as confusion at the back leads keeper Karl Darlow to make a hurried clearance into the legs of onrushing Leeds striker Chris Wood.

Fortunately for the visitors, the ball ricochets harmlessly wide of goal for a goal-kick.

Leeds just haven't had that bit of luck they've needed today.

  10. Post update

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

    Almost the breakthrough for Leeds!

Eunan O'Kane slides a pass through to Luke Ayling, whose cross is half-cleared by Vurnon Anita, the ball almost going straight to Chris Wood, who would have had a simple finish.

  11. Post update

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

Dwight Gayle celebrates with Newcastle team-mates

Changes for both sides in fact, Swedish striker Marcus Antonsson brought on for Souleymane Doukara for the hosts.

A minute or so later, Dwight Gayle, scorer of both goals in this game, is brought off to allow Aleksandar Mitrovic to play the final 10 minutes.

  12. Post update

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

Newcastle turn to the substitutes bench for the first time this afternoon, as Mo Diame replaces Yoan Gouffran for the final 15 minutes plus added time.

The sting has gone out of Leeds' attacks in the past few minutes. Perhaps Garry Monk will look to make changes as well?

  13. Post update

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

Still Leeds press, but still they can't beat Karl Darlow in the Magpies goal.

Souleymane Doukara has the latest effort, getting free from a defender at the back-post but not being able to get the power and the angle on his header to really test Darlow.

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

Andrew Neill: Good solid performance by Toon so far this afternoon. Would like to see Atsu, Mitrovic and Yedlin for the last 20.

Ethan Evans: Gayle is a class act in the EFL, however it's a different calibre of defending that he would be up against on international duty.

  15. Post update

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

On this form, both of these two teams should be competing for the top places come the end of the season.

Newcastle have been as impressive as you'd expect from the league leaders, but Leeds have given them a very good game despite the scoreline.

Luke Ayling threatens again from the Leeds right, whipping in a cross which Vurnon Anita has to put behind. The corner comes to nothing.

  16. Post update

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

Newcastle fans won't have seen much of Hadi Sacko this year - the Leeds winger is a real livewire on the wing, though his final delivery can occasionally let him down.

He picks out Souleymane Doukara breaking down the middle, but Doukara just puts a little too much on a pass towards Kemar Roofe, who would have been in on goal.

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

Hamish Gibson: Amazing how Dwight Gayle isn't involved with the England team

Kyle: Beautiful team goal from Newcastle if Arsenal scored one like that everyone would be in awe of it. Great goal.

Joseph LUFC: Just starting to think Leeds are going to get back in it and then Gayle goes and scores

Dan Bell: What a team goal. Toon army!

  18. Post update

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

Leeds haven't given up since Dwight Gayle's second goal, and Luke Ayling has a shot deflected just over the bar.

The hosts make their first change of the game, bringing winger Hadi Sacko on for midfielder Ronaldo Vieira.

  19. Post update

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

So, what do Leeds have left in the tank to fight back from two goals down?

They've been a big threat going forward ever since going behind, but Newcastle don't lose many from these positions.

Incidentally, I really do appreciate all the interaction from both sets of fans today on #bbcefl. Keep letting me know your thoughts and I'll try to include as many as I can.

  20. GOAL (Gayle)

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

Stunning football from Newcastle, and all of Leeds' hard work to get back into this game is undone.

Vurnon Anita plays a one-two with Ayoze Perez, and slides the ball across into the path opf Dwight Gayle.

Gayle stretches to poke the ball beyond Rob Green, and Newcastle double their lead.
