  2. Managers' verdict

    Burton Albion 2-0 Birmingham City

Quote Message: We've put in two good away performances and only got one point. Tonight we got our reward. Jamie Ward's reverse pass for the first goal was superb. Not too many people would see that pass, never mind play it. And as long as Chris O'Grady keeps working like that we don't mind who scores. The other lads love him. from Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough (on Sky Sports)

  3. Managers' verdict

    Burton Albion 2-0 Birmingham City

Quote Message: Burton didn't surprise me. Their wingbacks are so crucial. Key moments in the game didn't go our way. But we didn't deserve it. We didn't show enough quality. If you come to places like Burton and you're not up to it, they beat you. from Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett (on Sky Sports)

    Burton supporters celebrate

Burton win to climb six places to 13th in the Championship table as Gary Rowett's return to the Pirelli Stadium is ruined.

Blues stay fifth, still four points shy of an automatic promotion place after only their third reverse of the season - and their second away defeat on successive Friday nights.

Apart from a bright first 15 minutes, Blues were outplayed. And Nigel Clough's Brewers were deserved winners - only their second victory in nine games, but their fourth at home this season.

Quote Message: "People are saying my goal was offside and that I got a bit lucky, but I'll take it from Burton Albion striker Jamie Ward
    Burton Albion striker Jamie Ward
  6. Donaldson down

    Burton Albion 2-0 Birmingham City

Blues have to play out the four minutes of injury time with a limping Clayton Donaldson, after he writhes in agony after going down awkwardly, chasing a hopeful ball. He resumed after sustained treatment, but must remain a concern ahead of the Villa game, having made his first start in midweek after a month out with Achilles trouble.

  7. Post update

    Burton Albion 2-0 Birmingham City

Homecomings are usually something to savour - but not on this occasion for former Burton boss Gary Rowett. Birmingham could have gone third in the table with a victory tonight, but barring a miracle, it's not going to happen.

    Gary Rowett
  8. Brewers almost there

    Burton Albion 2-0 Birmingham City

Burton on the brink of their fourth home league win in seven games this season. This will be only Blues' third league defeat - but their second on successive Friday nights away from home. And nobody can say it has not been deserved.

Quote Message: There's a lot for Gary Rowett to think about ahead of the Villa game next Sunday from BBC WM's Paul Devlin
    BBC WM's Paul Devlin

Burton bring off striker Jamie Ward, scorer of their second goal, and put on Will Miller.

  10. Burton go close again

    Burton Albion 2-0 Birmingham City

Jackson Irvine's header flies just over, just as Birmingham were starting to look like they were getting back in the game. But Blues captain Michael Morrision then wastes an even better chance at the other end, putting a free header from substitute Greg Stewart's corner just wide.

  11. Burton scent a third goal

    Burton Albion 2-0 Birmingham City

Chris O' Grady allowed to turn on the edge of the box and flashes a left-foot shot just wide.

Quote Message: There aren't many redeeming features about this Birmingham City performance from BBC WM's Richard Wilford

  12. Post update

    Burton Albion 2-0 Birmingham City

Chris O'Grady has yet to open his scoring account since joining Burton -  but he has proved a right handful for the Birmingham defence this evening, literally in this case, as Ryan Shotton makes the challenge.

    Chris O'Grady

Yet another booking. That's six now, three for each team, as Blues defender Ryan Shotton becomes the latest to cause the prolific Mr Robinson to reach for his pencil. Blues have also made their third substitution, bringing on Greg Stewart for Jacques Maghoma.

    Burton Albion 2-0 Birmingham City

Jonathan Grounds becomes the fifth booking of the night. It is the Blues defender's fifth yellow card of the season too, meaning an automatic ban, which rules him out of the derby against Steve Bruce's Villa on Sunday week.

  15. GOAL - Burton Albion 2-0 Birmingham City

    Jamie Ward

    Jamie Ward

Former Aston Villa youngster Jamie Ward makes up for a string of missed chances earlier, keeping his cool as he latched onto a header to volley past Adam Legzdins, who got a hand to it but could not keep it out. It's Ward's fourth of the season. Video replays suggest that it was a marginal decision, as to why it was not chalked off for offside.

  16. Maghoma puts it in the stand

    Burton Albion 1-0 Birmingham City

Jacques Maghoma has a chance from a free-kick against his old club but puts it in the crowd.

    Burton Albion 1-0 Birmingham City

Strikers Che Adams and Clayton Donaldson come on as Gary Rowett makes a very positive double switch, sacrificing the two Davids, winger Cotterill and midfielder Davis.

Quote Message: It's great he's done it with more than half an hour left. Plenty of time for Blues to get back in the game from BBC WM's Paul Devlin
    BBC WM's Paul Devlin
  18. Brewers blow another chance

    Burton Albion 1-0 Birmingham City

Great chance for Lucas Akins after Michael Morrison fails to clear his lines, but he skies high and wide. Should have been 2-0. You wonder if they might have cause to regret so many missed chances, just as Blues can rue not scoring when they were on top early on.

  19. Back under way at the Pirelli Stadium

    Burton Albion 1-0 Birmingham City

And neither manager has made a half-time change, which, as far as Blues boss Gary Rowett is concerned, is maybe a bit of a surprise. Instead they appear to have adopted a different 4-2-3-1 system.

  20. Post update

    Burton Albion 1-0 Birmingham City

    Nigel Clough

Burton boss Nigel Clough clearly wasn't happy about something towards the end of the first half - maybe the three yellow cards for his players - but his side are just 45 minutes away from only a second win in nine league games.
