  1. Post update

It was a famous night for Southampton, but a forgettable one for Manchester United. Jose Mourinho's bad week continues, will it get better at the weekend?

We'll be back for live text commentary on all of the Premier League action on Saturday. See you then.

  2. Elsewhere in Europe

    Ajax celebrate

Ajax held off a late Celta Vigo comeback to win 3-2 and book their place in the knockout round. Shakhtar Donetsk are also through after they beat Gent 5-3.

Including Zenit who won earlier, Schalke are the fourth team through to the next round with a 2-0 win against Krasnodar. In the same group Red Bull Salzburg beat Nice 2-0 to stay in the competition.

In tonight's other late matches, Standard Liege beat Panathinaikos 3-0, Sporting Braga won 3-1 against Konyaspor, Fiorentina won 3-0 at home against Slovan Liberec, FK Qarabag won 1-0 at PAOK Salonika, Sparta Prague beat Hapoel Be'er Sheva 2-0, FC Zürich played out a goalless draw with Steaua Bucharest and Osmanlispor beat Villarreal 2-1.

  3. Post update

    Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan

Virgil Van Dijk has just added another five or so million onto his price tag with that performance. Brilliant in defence and a threat in attack for the Saints.

Manchester United could certainly have done with someone like him today...

  4. Saints in Europe stats

o   Southampton have lost only one of their 16 home games in all European competitions (W9 D6), with a current run of seven games unbeaten (W3 D4).

o   The Saints have conceded just six goals in their last 10 European games (inc. qualifiers), never conceding more than once in a game.

o   Dusan Tadic created six chances for the Saints; three more than any other Southampton player and double the amount of the all Inter players combined.

o   All four of Virgil van Dijk's goals for Southampton have come at St Mary's.

  5. 'Win was well deserved'

    Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan

Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk speaking to BT Sport: "The most important thing was that it was well deserved as well. We played good football, we were the dominating side, like before in Milan and today we rewarded ourselves with a win.

"Every corner we have I get pulled. It is part of the game. I told the referee every time to watch him but in the end we won and it doesn’t matter."

  6. 'It's in our own hands'

    Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan

Southampton midfielder Sam McQueen, speaking to BT Sport: "I saw him (Candreva) trying to dig up the penalty spot, I went over to him. I felt there was an elbow."

"It is fantastic that it is in our own hands. We win the next two games and we are through."

  7. They've done it

    Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan

    Simon Stone

BBC Sport at St Mary's Stadium

I don't think some of the Southampton fans around me can quite believe their team have won this game.

Their jubiliation is something to behold.

There are many in England who don't rate the Europa League. Too many games. Tough Thursday-Sunday turnaround. If you want a counter view, this is it.

Southampton"s Oriol Romeu, Dusan Tadic and Cuco Martina celebrate
  8. Post update

    Southampton -21 Inter Milan

The result means Southampton are second in Group K, three points clear of third-place Hapoel Beer-Sheva and two behind group leaders Sparta Prague.

Saints fans better start thinking about getting the 16th and 23rd of February 2017 booked off work. They are well placed for reaching the knockout stage.

    Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan

All over. Southampton secure a famous win, coming from behind to beat Italian giants Inter Milan with a superb second-half performance.

  10. Post update

    Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan

Southampton are seeing this game out superbly. Inter are trying to launch the ball forward but the hosts send it back towards the Italians' goal.

    Two minutes to go...

    Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan

Four minutes of added time is shown on the fourth official's board.

Miranda and James Ward-Prowse both pick off yellows after a bit of a coming together off the ball.

    Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan

Antonio Candreva goes off, probably a long time after many felt he should have gone. He's substituted, with Jonathan Biabiany on for the final few minutes. A bit of pace to run at a tiring Saints defence.

  13. Post update

    Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan

Inter players have their arms up in frustration as Southampton are awarded a soft free-kick on the right side of the visitors' area when Pierre Hojbjerg goes to ground as he attempts to squirm past his marker. It buys Southampton a few more precious seconds, before James Ward-Prowse's free-kick is cleared.

Mauro Icardi of Internazionale speaks to the referee during the UEFA Europa League Group K match between Southampton FC and FC Internazionale Milano at St Mary"s Stadium on November 3, 2016 in Southampton, England

    Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan

A change for Inter as Felipe Melo replaces Assane Demoya Gnoukouri.

Nathan Redmond then alleviates a bit of pressure on the Southampton defence with a shot that is pushed wide. James Ward-Prowse's corner is cleared.

  15. Ten minutes to go

    Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan

Can Southampton hold on for a famous win? They've got 10 minutes to try and close the game out and they've adopted a more cautious approach to the game after dominating much of the first half. They're inviting a bit of pressure from Inter now...

  16. CLOSE!

    Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan

As long as Mauro Icardi is on the pitch, Inter are going to have a chance of getting something from nothing. A rare attack for the Italians sees Icardi in space 30 yards from goal. He lets fly with a fierce effort that Fraser Forster can only palm away to his side.

  18. Look how far they have come

    Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan

    Simon Stone

BBC Sport at St Mary's Stadium

Seven years ago this week, Southampton needed two late Rickie Lambert goals to snatch a 2-2 draw with Leyton Orient.

Now they are less than 15 minutes away from beating the three time European champions.

Nearby Bournemouth are on a fairytale run. Swansea has also enjoyed a remarkable rise. But no-one should forget how far Southampton have come in such a short period of time.

Dusan Tadic has put in a solid shift, but his work is done as Claude Puel makes his second change of the night, replacing Tadic with Steven Davis.
