    Scotland manager Gordon Strachan on his decision to introduce substitutes Ikechi Anya and Chris Martin, who were instrumental in the winning goal: "When you see guys are ready to go on and play, and don't let the disappointment take over, it is easy for you. The 14 boys changed the result from a draw to a victory.

    "It says a lot about their fitness. You have got to have fitness to have the mental strength otherwise you have a weakness.

    "We had all these great performances and then the footballing gods decided to give us victory."

    On his thoughts about Sunday's crucial match in Slovenia: "I've not thought about it. I'm going to enjoy this for about an hour and a half. We're going to forget about Slovenia until this is over."

    Scotland boss Gordon Strachan, speaking to Sky Sports: "I genuinely thought we were going to score a goal. It would have been a huge disappointment if we didn't. That was some performance.

    "Slovakia going down to 10 men shook us for a bit because we had done our work against 11 - and then it changes. But we managed to adapt and we created plenty of chances. The man of the match for them was the keeper - he was magnificent. And the crossbar was good as well!"

    As Gareth Southgate alluded to, England have made a habit of scoring late goals in this qualifyign campaign.

    Adam Lallana's 95th-minute goal earned a 1-0 win in Slovakia in Sam Allardyce's reign, Harry Kane's 93rd-minute equlaiser earned a point in Scoland and they scored three goals after he 86th minute in Malta.

    Scotland keeper Craig Gordon, speaking to Sky Sports: "We left it late, we were creating one or two chances and I did feel we were going to get that one chance.

    "We felt the momentum was with us in last five or ten minutes to get the winner. Their keeper was in-form tonight but thankfully we got a bit of luck at the end.

    "Sunday is a big one - we have to give it everything. It is a great opportunity and one we have not had for some time. Everyone is looking forward to it."

    Scotland captain Darren Fletcher, speaking to Sky Sports: "When you keep creating chances you know you are going to get more. We were getting chances and we kept believing. We were patient. It doesn't matter how you get there as long as you get there in the end.

    "When a team goes down to 10 men you have got to wear them down - we did that. It does make it tricky but credit to the lads. We kept passing the ball, we stuck with it, the crowd was behind us."

    On Sunday's trip to Slovenia: "It is massive now. Tonight's game is only the first part. Everyone is delighted and excited, it is a great three points, but we are only halfway there."

    Gareth Southgate speaking to ITV Sport: "We played a team who have only conceded four goals in the competition and you could see why.

    "We weren't as sharp as we'd have hoped to be, but we stuck at it and it's not a coincidence if you keep scoring late goals.

    "We knew they had to win and were going to come onto us. We changed the formation at the end to try and exploit that."

    On Joe Hart: "He made big saves at important times so that's where his experience comes through.

    "We know we have to be better but we're going to a World Cup and that's fantastic. I think this team has potential but we have a hell of a lot of work to do."

    "I hope they give the winning goal to me but I don't know - that's why I didn't celebrate too much! It was a great ball in, I knew I had to get there, but Martin Skrtel got a touch. I was delighted to see it creep into the net."
