  1. Goodnight

FT: Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

Well European nights in mid-July are only ever memorable for the wrong reasons and no Celtic fan will be forgetting this one in a hurry. Humbled by a side of part-timers from Gibraltar, a country with a population half the size of Celtic Park.

The Brendan Rodgers era begins in ignominious fashion with arguably the worst result in the club's history. He will want to limit the damage with a convincing victory in the second leg at Parkhead next Wednesday to see Celtic through to the next round.

The likes of Gordon Strachan and Neil Lennon have suffered bad European defeats early in their spells in charge to go on and become successful Celtic managers, and the former Liverpool boss will be confident he can follow suit. However, this result will always be a black mark on his record and Celtic's reputation.

Fair play to the heroes of Lincoln Red Imps though. They earned the biggest result of their lives and deserve to enjoy the celebrations.

Thanks for your company and contributions this evening. Keep across the BBC Sport Scotland website for all the reaction to tonight's shock result.

Liam, Glasgow: "Ignominy for celtic tonight. For Brendan to be blaming the pitch and making excuses is an insult to all celtic fans. Humiliation, plain and simple."

Joe, London: "Rodgers no idea like at Liverpool always saying unlucky, now no embarrassment what is he thinking, will be a disaster appointment."

Clive, Liverpool: "Thought the Scottish wanted to stay in Europe."

  4. 'We're making no excuses'

FT: Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

Quote Message: It’s congratulations to them. It’s a good win for them. For us we accept it. Over the course of the two games if we didn’t get through I’d be concerned. We have to put it right in the next game. We’re making no excuses. We’ll be fine for the second game. from Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers

Jim: "We know that back at Celtic Park it will be a different story. But that does not excuse that performance - this group of players have been tarnishing the club and its values and history for too long. Major changes are needed."

Anonymous: "Unbelievable - after Andy Murray's heroics our pampered footballers can't beat a bunch of part-timers from a rock in the Med. The worst result in Scottish football history."

  6. Post update

FT: Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

Quote Message: There’s no panic. We’ve got enough quality here to get through to the next round. It’s a two-legged affair, our objective is to get through. I think the players gave everything that they had. The message (to the fans) is to stay calm. I always felt this qualification phase would be based on the second legs at home and we’ll need their support. from Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers

  7. Post update

Quote Message: A game that we dominated and had enough chances to score, but sometimes it can happen in games like that, one ball up the pitch and they’re in. We’ve given ourselves a bit of work to do. I saw enough from the game, we created enough to go through. Of course you never want to lose the game. You let the local team have their night, we press on, another week’s training and be better for it. There’s no embarrassment. We never took our chances and they took theirs. The second leg will be different. from Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers

Neuchatel Xamax, Artmedia Bratislava -  just two of the names that haunt Celtic fans to this day after they inflicted two of their worst European defeats.

You can now add Lincoln Red Imps to that list, but is this the worst of the lot?

  9. 'Celtic were panicking'

    Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

Quote Message: Celtic need to learn from this quickly. They need to get into better habits defensively by not conceding these goals. They were panicking a little bit, trying to rush things. The players know what's coming, they're going to have to deal with it and it's probably deserved. from Former Celtic striker Scott McDonald on BBC Radio Scotland

Geoff, Kelvindale: "If it was a pre-season friendly it would be really embarrassing but a Champions League qualifier? The worst result in the clubs history!"

Do you agree with Geoff, is this the worst result in Celtic's long history?

That's it. One of the darkest days in Celtic's history as they go down to the part-timers Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar.

So much hope and hype surrounded the appointment of Brendan Rodgers, and while it is still far too early to judge the manager, he will have some explaining to do after such a miserable performance and result.
