    Wilfried Zaha
  4. CLOSE!

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

Connor Wickham beautifully controls the ball and unleashes a powerful half-volley... it was arrowing into the bottom right corner until Paulo Gazzaniga dived low to his right to divert the effort.

  5. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

Yannick Bolasie a constant threat for the hosts. Palace looking the more likely to score, Wilfried Zaha and Yohan Cabaye combining on the right - and the Frenchman produces a cross-shot that poses no danger whatsoever.

  6. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

Careful, Paulo Gazzaniga. The wind looks like it's helping a backpass into goal but the goalkeeper remains calm and boots the ball away from danger. Southampton running out of time and ideas.

  7. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

We're into the final 10 minutes and Palace fans are in jubilant mood. Southampton have yet to show any real signs that they can come away from this game with a point.

One substitution to tell you about: James Ward-Prowse has replaced Oriol Romeu.

  8. Post update

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

    John Hartson

Former Wales striker on Final Score

"I have not seen a better save all season than the one from Wayne Hennessey in the first half at Selhurst Park. Just wait until you see it on Match of the Day.

"And it actually it turned out to be even more important because Crystal Palace went up the other end and scored to take the lead just a few minutes later."

  9. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

The noise inside Selhurst Park is increasing... Yannick Bolasie weaves into the box after Southampton concede a cheap throw-in and finds Wilfried Zaha, but the winger gets underneath the ball and shoots high.

  10. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

Southampton getting plenty of the ball, but rarely threatening in the final third. Shane Long falls to the turf after a challenge from Damien Delaney... that's a free-kick.., but Wayne Hennessey gathers with ease to snuff out the danger.

  11. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

Southampton go forward in search of the equaliser, but Yohan Cabaye cuts off Virgil van Dijk's hopeful crossfield ball. The Saints need to be more accurate in their passing if they are to challenge Palace.

  12. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

In the last five minutes the play has mostly been in Palace's half, but Southampton's final ball has been poor. Sadio Mane's cross drifts out of play and another attack comes to a disappointing end.

    Scott Dann and Graziano Pelle
  13. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

Southampton are set for a double substitution as Graziano Pelle and Dusan Tadic wait patiently near the halfway line for the ball to go out of play.

The visitors are attacking, though, and Ryan Bertrand earns his team a corner.

On come Pelle and Tadic for Steven Davis and Maya Yoshida.

  14. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

Oriol Romeu lets fly from outside the box, but that won't trouble Wayne Hennessey.

  15. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

When will Southampton introduce Graziano Pelle? Soon perhaps. The Italian international - who has scored only once in his last six games - is sprinting down the touchline, hoping his manager gives him a chance.

  16. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

Southampton currently monopolising possession... Virgil van Dijk's eyes widen, he takes aim from 30 yards out and the ball flies into the stands. The Saints need to be more patient if they are to fight their way back into this one.

  17. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

Cédric Soares' cross finds Victor Wanyama, but the midfielder's touch is poor, though the ball bobbles towards Shane Long who wildly swings at it when a calmer approach might have tested Wayne Hennessey.

  18. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

"Super Alan Pardew," sing the home fans. while Ronald Koeman - whose side are winless in three league matches - looks on from the dugout, tickling his chin as if mulling the options he has at his disposal.

    Alan Pardew
  19. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

Fabulous! Yannick Bolasie collects the ball inside his own half and drives forward, evading would-be tacklers as he gallops into the box... the DR Congo international crosses from the right, but there's no-one in home colours able to collect.

Bolasie could have released the ball sooner, but it was a brilliant run.

  20. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

An early corner for Crystal Palace, which sparks wild cheers from the home support, but the hosts are unable to rattle the visiting defence on this occasion.

  21. KICK-OFF

The second half gets under way with the line-ups as they were before the break.

  22. HALF-TIME

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

Yannick Bolasie shone in the first half, as he has for most of the season for Palace, and the winger has been a constant in the hosts' attacks (the dots in this graphic illustrate his first-half touches).

Bolasie has attacked down the left and right, and occasionally through the middle, with his surge down the right flank late on proving decisive in Yohan Cabaye's goal.

  23. HALF-TIME

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

Southampton enjoyed 54% of the possession in the first half, but Palace always looked the more likely to score.

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton
  24. HALF-TIME

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

A toot of Mike Dean's whistle brings an enjoyable(ish) first half to an end. Palace deservedly in the lead at the break.

  25. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

Victor Wanyama's volley is wild and wide after he engineers space for himself on the edge of the box. Time running out for Southampton in this half.

  26. Goal replay

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

    goal

Yannick Bolasie has been Palace's most inventive player and the winger (number 10 in the graphic) cut loose down the right, used his strength and pace to produce the perfect cross for Yohan Cabaye.

  27. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

James McArthur illegally brings down Sadio Mane - a chance for Southampton? Steven Davis drifts the free-kick into the box, but Palace's defence comfortably deals with it.

  28. Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

    Jason Roberts

Former West Brom striker on Final Score

"Bolasie has been one of the most exciting players in the Premier League last year and this year. For Cabaye, it looks like an easy goal, but it was world-class wing-play."

Yohan Cabaye and Crystal Palace players
  29. Post update

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

    John Hartson

Former Wales striker on Final Score

"It really is an inch-perfect cross from from Yannick Bolasie. Yohan Cabaye gets into the box, loses his man, and gets the reward with a simple tap-in."

  30. GOAL - Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

Yohan Cabaye, unmarked in the middle of the six-yard box, steers home Yannick Bolasie cross. A suspicion of offside as Wilfried Zaha sets Bolasie free down the right - but it was too close to call with the naked eye. Terrible defending from the visitors to allow the Frenchman to roam unattended.

    Yohan Cabaye, Crystal Palace
  31. Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

We're into the final 10 minutes of the first half. Both teams have had chances but Palace have been the more dominant.

  32. GREAT SAVE!

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

A fabulous save from Wayne Hennessey, the Welshman tipping away Shane Long's goal-bound header.

Sadio Mane the architect of that move - a beautiful back-heel creating space for Cédric Soares to cross from the right and find Long in the six-yard box.

  33. Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Palace building momentum once again... Wilfried Zaha attempts to dance through a couple of defenders on the edge of the box, but with roadblocks in his way he passes to Yannick Bolasie instead, who produces a wasteful cross.

Paulo Gazzaniga takes his time over the goal-kick with the Palace fans' hisses ringing in his ears. The goalkeeper having to deal with the wind and the ire of the home support.

  34. Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

The strong wind is making it difficult to control high balls. A messy period from both teams, the ball spending more time in the air than on the floor. Much of the action in the middle of the pitch. Not much to talk about.

    Cedric Soares and Yannick Bolasie
  35. Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Palace dominating, but Southampton cut loose on the counter-attack...

Sadio Mané finds Shane Long with a delicate cross-fielder - but the striker, with oodles of time to take aim, balloons his effort wide.

  36. Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Three saves in quick succession from Paulo Gazzaniga. After saving Yannick Bolasie's effort, he stops Yohan Cabaye's driving effort from rippling the net and seconds later prevents Connor Wickham from scoring his first Palace goal. Palace on the up.

  37. CLOSE!

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

A fabulous cross from Yannick Bolasie is turned away, but the forward responds with a super effort which is heading towards the top right corner until Paulo Gazzaniga palms it away for a corner.

That would have been a goal, with the wind seemingly helping to keep Bolasie's strike on target.

Yannick Bolasie and Virgil van Dijk
  38. Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

A clumsy Sadio Mane tackle on Joel Ward gifts another free-kick to the hosts to the right of goal. Yohan Cabaye takes charge, the Frenchman's effort fizzes menacingly across the face of the goal. Oohs from the crowd as the free-kick flies wide of the woodwork.

  39. Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Victor Wanyama weaves down the right towards the Palace box, but the forward loses possession and the move dies a death.

Saints quickly regain possession, however, and spray it across the field, gradually building momentum, gaining in confidence...

Cédric Soares crosses from the right, but Palace hold firm as Scott Dann heads the ball away. Promising for the Saints.

    Cedric Soures and Victor Wanyama
  40. Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Virgil van Dijk in the thick of it. The defender wants his goalkeeper to collect a long ball over the top, but Paulo Gazzaniga stands on his line and the ball bobbles off the Dutchman's shin for a careless corner. Nothing comes of it, though, much to Van Dijk's relief.

  41. Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

The majority of play taking place in Southampton's half, with Palace's high-pressing forcing the visitors to rush when in possession. Patience is needed from the Saints.

Victor Wanyama of Southampton and Yannick Bolasie of Crystal Palace
  42. Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Connor Wickham coolly controls a high ball near the touchline and frees up Wilfried Zaha who whips a low, outswinging cross across the face of the goal... The ball whizzes by Virgil van Dijk but Cédric Soares clears up the danger to spare his team-mate's blushes.

  43. Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Saints' Cedric Soares gallops down the right flank in his team's first foray into the opposition half. Palace firm in defence, though.

A high-tempo start to this match, but both teams currently lacking poise on the ball.

  44. CLOSE!

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

An opportunity to mention the beautifully named Virgil van Dijk as he concedes a free-kick in a dangerous position, on the edge of the box.

Yohan Cabaye curls his effort across the face of the goal towards Scott Dann - who scored against Everton on Monday - and the defender is only a fraction away from making contact. Oof.

  45. Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Palace start with intent, forcing Virgil van Dijk to swipe the ball away for a throw-in near the Southampton corner. It comes to nothing, though. It's a lacklustre one from Pape Souaré which is comfortably cleared.

  46. KICK-OFF

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Mike Dean blows his whistle to start the match. The corner flags are dancing to an upbeat tempo which suggests there's a strong wind swirling around Selhurst Park.

  48. We must play our own game - Koeman

    Crystal Palace v Southampton

Quote Message: Crystal Palace are a strong team, they have a lot of physicality, and some good quality players. They like to play offensively, with a big spirit in the team. We have to stop that, and play our own game, and to use our strengths will be very important and very decisive. from Southampton manager Ronald Koeman

  49. Saints fans in a festive mood

Crystal Palace v Southampton (15:00 GMT)

A Saints fan is determined to get value for money from her antlers. The Cheerleaders have been dancing on the pitch dressed as Mrs Clauses, too. No-one's saving their costumes for Boxing Day.

The players walk out onto the pitch, into a fabulously jovial atmosphere. Five minutes or so until we get under way.

  50. Pardew praises Wickham

Crystal Palace v Southampton (15:00 GMT)

Quote Message: I look at Connor Wickham training and he hasn't scored yet in games, but the goalscoring doesn't bother me. I've worked with enough strikers to know he's going to score goals. The rest of his game is coming together and I'm really pleased with what he does for us, so he'll be influential against Southampton even if he doesn't score. from Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew

  51. Commentator's notes

Crystal Palace v Southampton (15:00 GMT)

    John Roder

Match of the Day commentator at Selhurst Park

"Every team seems to have an opponent who they find it hard to get any positive result against, and for Crystal Palace that bogey side in the Premier League is surely Southampton.

"Ronald Koeman will be hoping that continues this Saturday, as his team look to halt a run of three without a victory (four if you include the League Cup thrashing to Liverpool).

"Palace have a better record on their travels than they do at Selhurst Park this season but, backed by their magnificent home support, Alan Pardew's team will always be a force. It should be a fascinating afternoon."

  52. 15 minutes until kick-off

The spirit of Christmas is strong at Selhurst Park. Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas has been played, the mascots are wearing red hats a la Father Christmas. No white beards, though, which is disappointing.

The players have just finished their warm-ups, the pitch is being sprinkled with wet stuff... 15 minutes until kick-off.

  53. Goal-shy Palace

    Palace graphic
  54. Saints formation unexpected - Pardew

Crystal Palace v Southampton (15:00 GMT)

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew: "The team does pick itself. We just want to win today. Sometimes you get a victory which is more than a victory, which that was against Newcastle.

"But this will be difficult, because Southampton come here today with a changed formation, no Pelle, so it's a little bit different to what we were expecting."

  55. Saints team news

Crystal Palace v Southampton (15:00 GMT)

Saints manager Ronald Koeman has been forced to ponder a few selection dilemmas. Firstly, he's without regular stopper Maarten Stekelenburg, who is being bothered by a toe injury. Top scorer Graziano Pelle (knee) is only fit enough for a spot on the bench, where he will be joined by attacking midfielder Dusan Tadic.

Koeman makes four changes in total, with Paulo Gazzaniga, Maya Yoshida, Oriol Romeu and Shane Long all getting the nod.

  56. Palace team news

Crystal Palace v Southampton (15:00 GMT)

The Palace team news is pretty simple. One change for Alan Pardew's men as winger Wilfried Zaha returns from suspension to start. Out goes central midfielder Mile Jedinak, who has an ankle injury. Forwards Dwight Gayle and Bakary Sako also miss out with knocks.

    Palace
  57. Post update

The hosts have lost four home matches so far in the league, a sorry run, while the visitors are winless in three Premier League ties - and were booted out of the League Cup after a 6-1 home thrashing by Liverpool.

Fortunes must surely turn for one team - but which one? Crystal Palace? Southampton? Let's find out.
