  1. Post update

    Until next time

So Celtic will have to wait until next season at least to have another go at the Champions League...though Aberdeen or Inverness or Hearts or (insert team name here) might have something to say about that. Thank you very much indeed for joining us here on the BBC Sport website, whether you're on your PC, mobile or tablet. Enjoy the rest of your evening.

  2. FULL-TIME

    Forfar 1-2 Hearts (aet)

  3. FULL-TIME

    East Fife 1-3 Motherwell (aet)

  4. Post update

    Celtic manager Ronny Deila

"The set plays were very disappointing. It is very rare that we concede two goals from set plays. I think if we played our best we had a good chance to go through. We don't have to sell Virgil van Dijk, but you never know in football. He is a very good football player that we want to keep."

  5. Post update

    Celtic manager Ronny Deila

"The hype about the Champions League is a big thing. Everybody wants it so badly. You have to deal with it but we looked very stressed. We didn't look like we wanted to go out and play football. We have a lot of young players coming through but this was a hard lesson for us. The disallowed goal was a big mistake. It could have changed the game, it is very disappointing. There are a lot of disappointed coaches and players in there. We have to get back on track again. We have shown that (the Europa League) is the level we are at. Stefan Johansen is 23, he has never played in the Champions League. Seven of the players have never been in the Champions League before."

  6. Post update

    Celtic manager Ronny Deila

"We looked very uncomfortable on the ball. We looked frightened and scared and that is very disappointing. It was a team performance that is not at the level we should expect at these games. We lose and win together. This is my responsibility. We have to learn from this, some very hard learning. We knew if we were at our best we could go through but we were not even close. We felt and saw that we did not deal with the pressure. We didn't cope with the pressure. The overall team performance was not good enough."

  7. Post update

    Former Celtic goalkeeper Pat Bonner

"Celtic were not effective tonight. They did not perform. They let the crowd get to them. They lost three goals to set pieces - corners - over the two legs so they need to look carefully at that. They had enough height in that team to deal with anything. Celtic threw it away over the two legs. They put pressure on themselves."

The cost of failure in Malmo

A bit like losing contestants being shown what they could have won in a game show, the riches on offer to those teams entering the Champions League group stage were detailed by BBC Scotland reporter Alasdair Lamont earlier today. Al estimates Celtic will make about £8m in the Europa League, some way short of the £21m or so they would have earned in Uefa's top club tournament.

Anonymous: "Been following Celtic for over 50 years, don't agree with statements from Celtic management that we belong in the Champions League. The state of Scottish football at present no Scottish team belongs in the Champions league."

John, Irvine: "What's this zonal marking all about? Could you pick a Celtic man of the match?"

Jim, Edinburgh: "We need to face facts. Scottish football as a whole operation is very lowly rated. Our media are kind and 'big it up' for punters but really, it is no better than England's lowest main league. Yes, that bad. Strategically we are no match at the sport. We don't even know how to play referees. Our football is bad. Our champs have just been given a lesson on many aspects of the new game that is football by a mid table also poor footballing country. Sad demise."

Tom English provides us with one of modern football's truisms

"The longer you are out of the Champions League, the harder it is to get in."

  12. GOAL

    East Fife 1-3 Motherwell (Ainsworth)

  14. Post update

    BBC Scotland's Tom English

"They put themselves into a winning position, 2-0 at Celtic Park, and they blew it. There are no excuses. I didn't see character out there from Scott Brown. I'd love to see the stats on mis-placed passes by Stefan Johansen. I didn't see any leaders. I saw Celtic bubbling at Celtic Park but then they had the mishap."

  17. Post update

  19. Post update

    Malmo 2-0 Celtic

BBC Scotland's Tom English in Malmo

"I think Celtic were out-fought and out-thought. It might sound crazy to say it but I think Malmo wanted it more than Celtic. Malmo had an almost frenzied desire to get the ball back when they gave it away. Of course we can talk about the Bitton goal that should have been but wasn't, but Celtic got what they deserved. Celtic should have been good enough to see out that first leg but they were undone by their own inadequacies. They are out and it's a very, very disappointing night for this club."

Jim, Troon: "Once again we see how good our top league is, it's poor. Our league is a joke, we could not get a decent sponsor. They got one on the cheap. I don't totally blame Celtic, they don't have any competition in the top league, our whole SPL needs overhauled."

Neil, Stornoway: "Two years with no Champions League, pathetic, sack the manager, clueless the lot of them."

  24. Post update

    Malmo 2-0 Celtic

    BBC Scotland commentator Liam McLeod

"Celtic will go into the Europa League. They will be open-mouthed catching the crumbs from the top table of the Champions League. What will the impact be? Van Dijk is almost certain to be on his way. Scottish football in general and Celtic in particular have just been delivered a body blow."

  25. Post update

    Malmo 2-0 Celtic

    BBC Scotland's Chris McLaughlin

"Celtic crumbled under the weight of Champions League expectation here in Malmo tonight. Yes, decisions didn't go their way but the Swedes looked the better side for most of the match. Europa League will be scant consolation for a club who believe they belong at the top table."

So, Malmo lead this play-off tie 4-3 on aggregate. Celtic need to score twice without reply to go through. They have about half an hour to do so.

  58. Post update

    Malmo 2-0 Celtic

Now, such has been the pace of the action in the second half, I haven't had a chance to describe Craig Gordon's superb double save just before Malmo scored their second. First the giant keeper parried a fizzing shot by Vladimir Rodic from 16 yards, then got to his feet to make an even better save from Markus Rosenberg, who shook his head in disbelief.

The second half has begun like the first - frantic and error strewn. Perhaps, given the prize on offer, this is none too surprising.

  67. YELLOW CARD

    Malmo 1-0 Celtic

Jo Inge Berget draws a foul from Dedryck Boyata, who is booked for halting the striker. From the free-kick 30 yards out Malmo's Berget screws an effort horribly wide.

  68. GOALS

    Scottish League Cup

    Malmo 1-0 Celtic

My, my, my. Celtic are living dangerously. Nikola Djurdjic gets to the goal-line and cuts the ball back for the unmarked Markus Rosenberg who sends a first-time shot with his right boot flashing past Craig Gordon's post.

  70. KICK-OFF

  73. Post update

    East Fife 0-0 Motherwell

BBC Scotland's Richard Wilson at New Bayview

"The longer this game stays at 0-0, the more bullish East Fife will become and the more anxious that will Motherwell will feel. The visitors have failed to grasp control of the play, and have looked disjointed and lacking in a cutting edge. Scott McDonald may need to come off the bench to add some attacking impetus."

  74. Text us on 80295

John, Girvan: "Same old story with Scottish teams, just not good enough, AGAIN."

John, Troon: "It wasn't a hand ball. Griffiths' elbow was up against the keeper that's why the Celtic goal did not stand."

Philip Wilson: "Malmo should be down a man for that Suarez-esk handball! The man behind the goal proving their worth yet again."

  75. Post update

    Malmo 1-0 Celtic

Certainly Celtic can feel hard done by with the disallowed goal but replays of the incident where Leigh Griffiths was booked for knocking Anton Tinnerholm over as he wasted time show that the Scot put his knee in his opponent's groin. That could have been a red card.

  78. Post update

    Malmo 1-0 Celtic

Well, that disallowed goal by Nir Bitton will be very controversial if Celtic go out by one goal. It's not clear if the referee ruled it out because he saw the ball hit a raised arm and thought it was the Celtic midfielder's, or he may have seen some other infringement in a packed six-yard box.

  84. DISALLOWED GOAL

    Malmo 1-0 Celtic

    Nir Biton's goal is disallowed

Celtic have the ball in the net thanks to a close-range shot by Nir Bitton but the Serbian referee Milorad Mazic rules it out. That seems a very harsh decision for it was Bitton's marker who handled the ball when he rose to head it clear.

    The referee disallowed Celtic's goal
  85. YELLOW CARD

    Malmo 1-0 Celtic

Now, didn't Leigh Griffiths say his parents called him a brat? Well, in a show of frustration or petulance the little striker rushes towards Malmo defender Anton Tinnerholm and pushes him over to get past him to speed things up at a free-kick. Not surprisingly, he is booked.

Play rages to the other end and Saidy Janko crosses for Leigh Griffiths, but the Celtic striker can't get on the end of it.

Malmo are first to press and gain a free-kick 10 yards into the Celtic half when Stuart Armstrong boots an opponent's ankle.

  115. KICK-OFF

You know things are about to get interesting when the Champions League anthem is blasted out and a giant banner sporting the Champions League logo is ruffled by exhausted ball boys and girls in the centre circle.

Shaun Bhoy67: "Cmon Celtic time to turn it on and prove to the land we belong at Europe's top table. Celtic to win 1-0 with Van Dijk to send us through to the group stages with a send of goal. Cmon the Hoops!"

Andrew, Richhill: "If Celtic can't manage to qualify for the Champions League group stages after being given straight-forward draws against the weaker Icelandic, Azberbaijani and Swedish champions, then there is a serious problem. But as usual, Celtic aren't making things easy for themselves!"

    Malmo and Celtic fans

Five minutes until kick-off and the atmosphere is electric. Both sets of fans are in full voice.

This time last year Malmo beat Salzburg to book their place in the Champions League group stages. They trailed the Austrians by one goal going into the home leg, but a 3-0 win in Sweden ensured they progressed.

Ryder Cup golfer and Celtic fan Stephen Gallacher in Malmo

"A lot rides on this, not just for Celtic but for Scottish teams. There's a big windfall. If we keep a clean sheet we're through. You'd have thought Malmo had won the Champions League, the way they celebrated (at the end of the first leg)."

BBC Scotland's Tom English in Malmo

"There is a danger that someone like Scott Brown could lose his head in this sort of atmosphere."

BBC Scotland's Chris McLaughlin at the Swedbank Stadion

    The case for the defence?

So what do you make of Celtic's defence this evening? Emilio Izaguirre drops to the bench and in at left-back comes Charlie Mulgrew, while Mikael Lustig is out of the squad completely, having failed to recover from the hamstring injury in the first leg against the Swedes. Saidy Janko takes his place on the right side of the back four, with Virgil van Dijk and Dedryck Boyata in the middle.

Celtic are a different beast from the side who were knocked out not once, but twice from the play-off stage last year. A reprieve after defeat by Legia Warsaw, who fielded an ineligible player, gave them a second chance but Ronny Deila's team could not find a way past Maribor.

Celtic suffered heartache at this stage last season, being eliminated 2-1 on aggregate by Slovenian side NK Maribor.

But Deila believes Celtic now have a better understanding and team spirit than a year ago.

  130. Post update

Malmo manager, Age Hareida told reporters at Monday's media conference: "Celtic are capable of defending. I think they are more of an international side than Salzburg (last year's play-off opponents) and they know what to do at an away ground."

The Norwegian believes compatriot Ronny Deila's team will be difficult to break down.

Jo Inge Berget's second goal at Celtic Park has given the Swedes a huge boost going into tonight's fixture.

His last-gasp goal means it will be a tense evening for fans of both sides, with only one goal in it.
