    Arsenal

Start as they mean to go on?

Victory for Arsenal not only ends Arsene Wenger's long wait for victory over Jose Mourinho, but perhaps deals an early psychological blow, while suggesting Chelsea could well have a fight on their hands as they look to retain the league title.

This Premier League apertif has certainly whet the appetite for the season ahead, which gets under way this weekend.

I'll leave you with the match report and highlights and we'll be back on Saturday for the big kick-off but until then, goodbye.

He’s such an amazing player and has already shown what a good signing he is. There is a really good feeling about this season but you never want to speak too soon. Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea

Here's the moment just after Jose Mourinho had waited to shake the hand of every Arsenal player. Arsene Wenger had opted to walk behind him and Mourinho turned and walked down the tunnel. Both ignoring each other.

    Snub-tastic.

  6. Manager reaction

    Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea

Quote Message: We were the best team. We had more initiative, we controlled the game by having ball possession. But when a team is behind, the energy and intensity to turn results around is more difficult because people are not sharp. Arsenal defended with 10 players, they put everybody in front of their own line and they had good organisation, congratulations to them. They had a couple of chances in counter attacks but we had ours in organised football. They played their game tactically and found themselves one goal in front without any reason, included players in the back and they did well. This season the Premier League title is very difficult but it is very difficult for everyone. The way other teams are spending they have big power in the hands while we are the same as last season. And with that we are going to try. from Jose Mourinho Chelsea manager, speaking to BT Sport

"Psychologically, you need to win trophies. For a long time Arsenal did not win enough. But now they are used to victories at Wembley. There was very little between the two teams but in the end, Arsenal won it 1-0. That's not a scoreline you would have thought of a while ago."

"I think Chelsea will go to three at the back now, with Willian and Victor Moses playing as wing-backs. We've not seen that before from Jose Mourinho. Maybe it's a new tactical option for the new season.

"Falcao's movement has been good since he came on, I'm liking the runs he's been making. He'll definitely benefit from having Cesc Fabregas in midfield, but Arsenal have been defending against him really well. Every time Falcao gets the ball Laurent Koscielny gets tight and two midfielders drop to surround him."

Oscar is straight into the action as he scampers forward from midfield. He fancies his chances from 30 yards, but he shouldn't have because his shot is poor, scuffed well wide of Petr Cech's goal.

Chelsea have seen plenty of the ball in the early stages of this half, but they are almost caught out when Mesut Ozil is left alone in plenty of space. Francis Coquelin spots his run and tries to drive a low pass to Ozil but hits it with too much pace and Chelsea escape.

  131. Falcao can be super again - Mourinho

Jose Mourinho believes Radamel Falcao can rediscover his "super scorer" status at Chelsea.

“I like him, I like him a lot as a player," said Mourinho.

"We play very well with a striker of his sort. He’s not just a striker who can score goals, he is always a threat. He contributes a lot to the quality of the game."

  132. 'Van Gaal didn't give Falcao a chance'

    Falcao in training

So Radamel Falcao starts on the bench today. He struggled at Manchester United last season, but can he succeed at Chelsea this year?

Former Chelsea striker Hernan Crespo – now manager at Serie B side Modena – believes the Colombian needs to rediscover his self-belief.

“After such a bad injury as he had you need time and it’s not easy to recover. He met a manager in Louis van Gaal who didn’t give him the chance to play regularly.

“You also have to consider that every player wants to play with continuity, but managers don’t always receive the same treatment from their bosses: if they lose a few games they risk to get sacked too! You have to take your chances if you want to play regularly; probably he was not the kind of player Van Gaal was looking for.

“We will see what happens at Chelsea, which is obviously a top club too: it won’t be easy for him to play regularly either. Jose doesn’t make any presents... All Falcao has to do is to believe in himself and to be the great player he is. That will be enough to convince Mourinho to give him a chance.”
