  1. Post update

    Man Utd 0-1 Southampton

It's time to wrap this up. A day that will live long in the memory of Southampton fans. The Saints are up to third in the Premier League table after a first league away win at Manchester United for 27 years. But it's back to the drawing board for Louis van Gaal and his Red Devils.

Thanks for your company and all your comments. The football does not stop here. Build up to Barcelona's game with Atletico Madrid is under way, while David Moyes's Real Sociedad are currently 1-0 up at Granada. Score updates here. Until later...

  2. Next up

    Man Utd 0-1 Southampton

Manchester United's next game is away to QPR on 17 January where they face a reunion with Rio Ferdinand. After that their next Premier League match is at home against bottom club Leicester on 31 January.

Southampton are in FA Cup action next. They face a third round replay away to Ipswich on Wednesday before travelling to Newcastle on 17 January.

  3. Text us on 81111

Andi in Aylesbury: All I keep reading is spend more money on Man Utd defence to get it better. What happened to training and getting the best out of what you've got. Isn't that what great managers do.

Ginger in London: Great performance from the Saints. Everybody in the media was talking as if they were a relegated side even before the season started. Not any more.

  4. The more things change...

    Man Utd 0-1 Southampton

    Manchester United

A tense exchange in the post-match news conference between Louis van Gaal and a journalist, who informs the Dutchman that he has the same amount of points as David Moyes did at the same stage last season.

"Yes. You have waited until this moment to put this question? This moment I have the same points as David Moyes? OK.

"We have to be better, we have to improve and that is why we are working hard and working on that. I have said already we were the dominating team, but we have to create more when you are the dominating team. I think Southampton came for the draw, and went away with the victory."

  5. Van Persie to have ankle scan

    Man Utd 0-1 Southampton

More bad news for Manchester United. Striker Robin van Persie is to have a scan on a damaged ankle that forced him to limp off against Southampton.

  6. Manager reaction

    Man Utd 0-1 Southampton

    Southampton manager Ronald Koeman

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman, speaking to Sky Sports: "We had some problems in the first half. The movements of Wayne Rooney especially but in the second half we were much better, we had more domination and scored a good goal, then you knew they would play long ball with Marouane Fellaini. It is three points at Old Trafford and that is fantastic.

"The win says a lot about our ambition. We showed we can beat big teams. The belief was in the team today and that was key for the three points. It was not an easy game for Southampton, it hasn't been in the past but finally our fans celebrate three points at Old Trafford."

  7. Manager reaction

    Man Utd 0-1 Southampton

    Radamel Falcao

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal on the absence of Radamel Falcao from his squad: "As a coach you have to make decisions, you have to look at the composition of your team and select and look at your game plan. I decided he is out of the 18 because I have to change Luke Shaw and Angel Di Maria for example. You have to look at the needs of your selection at the time. Marouane Fellaini came in and because of his substitution we created three chances.

"I hope we are improving, because we can still improve. We showed today that we played better at home against Southampton than away, then we won but now we lost. We can still win the FA Cup and reach the top four, we have a lot to fight for."

  8. Manager reaction

    Man Utd 0-1 Southampton

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, speaking to Match of the Day: "We played a much better game than Southampton. They were lucky to score out of nothing. That is very disappointing. We didn't create so much but we dominated the game. They came for a draw, I believe, and they go away with a victory, that is disappointing.

"We have to improve. We have to make better choices with the ball but you also have to take into account that the opponent was well organised today."

  9. Manager reaction

    Man Utd 0-1 Southampton

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal, speaking to Sky Sports: "We didn't create so many chances, despite dominating the game. We gave them a chance in the first minute but dominated after that. We had three big chances, but it was not enough.

"Southampton were well organised, defended well but they came for a draw, I believe, and they go away with a win, which is disappointing. Mata had three chances, but you cannot change the result. We gave the goal away. Football is game from mistakes."

Agree with Van Gaal's comments? Did Manchester United dominate? Tweet#bbcfootball.

  10. Player reaction

    Man Utd 0-1 Southampton

    Southampton's Dusan Tadic

Southampton substitute and match winner Dusan Tadic, whose introduction was delayed after leaving his shirt in the dressing room: "The top four is possible but we have to go game by game. We have beaten good opponents and we have to keep doing this. There was no shirt, I'd left it in the dressing room. When you score you don't think about what you will do. Normally I don't do that (take shirt off), but this time I did."

  11. Player reaction

    Man Utd 0-1 Southampton

Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin (right) in action against Manchester United's Wayne Rooney

Southampton's Morgan Schneiderlin, speaking to Sky Sports: "We have played well here before and we deserved a win. It's just a fantastic feeling. Character was key, we went through a very tough patch in December and we showed good spirit and showed we believe in ourselves and in each other and that we can do something great this season.

"People were writing us off at the start of the season but we will take things game by game and see where we are at the end of the season. We must not get carried away."

Tom Blakey: Seven points against Chelsea, Arsenal and Man Utd is top-four form. Time to start taking Southampton seriously!

Sean Haughton: If Southampton, Arsenal and Spurs kick-on, Manchester United will be looking at seventh again come May. So much for that game-changing war chest.

David Broome: Maybe Louis van Gaal will come back down to earth and worry about top four finish rather than the title? Phil Jones is the clumsiest player in the Premier League.

  15. Manager reaction

    Man Utd 0-1 Southampton

    Southampton manager Ronald Koeman (right)

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman, speaking to Match of the Day: "Juan Mata had two big chances at the end, we missed that luck in the home game and we got that today. If you play against a big side you need spirit and quality but you also need belief in yourself and your team-mates and we showed that today. We have had good organisation all season, we have 11 clean sheets in 21 games and that is key to being successful.

"We have aspirations [of securing a European finish], but at the beginning of the season you have to wait. Now we can say we fight for a European place. The top five or six, we will fight until the last game."

On goalscorer Dusan Tadic: "I don't like players taking off their shirt. It is a yellow card but he was fantastic in the final half hour. He made the difference when he came in and I am proud of him."

  16. Player reaction

    Man Utd 0-1 Southampton

    Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney, speaking to Sky Sports: "That is football, that is how it goes. I think overall we had the better chances and played the better football and deserved to win but we were punished. I have seen Southampton play better, we stopped a lot of their threats but we got punished. We have to move on and focus on the next game."

  17. Post update

    Man Utd 0-1 Southampton

    Robbie Savage

BBC Radio 5 live at Old Trafford

"United's back three can't defend. They keep making errors and I've got no idea how they keep getting in the team. Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have both been there long enough to grab that position by the scruff of the neck, so I can't understand why they haven't.

"Going forward today they were also awful. Not one shot on target and I wonder when the last time was that happened in the history of this ground."

  18. Post update

    Man Utd 0-1 Southampton

Ronald Koeman has just told the television cameras that Southampton dominated at Old Trafford. Now Dutch compatriot Louis van Gaal is claiming United dominated. The truth is United only really came to life in the closing stages yet they still failed to register a shot on target.

Southampton's Jose Fonte (left in action against Manchester United

Southampton's Jose Fonte, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's not everyday you get a win at Manchester United. The mental focus was massively important. We were under a lot of pressure in the first half and we knew we needed to do better. It was a tough game but it was a game in which we defended well, it was a fantastic performance."

David Llloyd Edwards: Southampton are just not going away from the top four. Louis van Gaal looks unimpressed.

Cameron Laws: Van Gaal needs to take blame for this. Poor team selection (far too negative) and even worse substitutes (every week).

"But, lets talk how good Southampton have been. Defensively rigid and clinical in attack."

  35. Post update

Graham Green: Looks like Southampton have already started playing for the draw, with more then half an hour to go. Dangerous strategy.

  60. SUBSTITUTION

Robin van Persie leaves the field

Dusan Tadic is coming on for Southampton. But his appearance is delayed as he doesn't have the right shirt and a member of the backroom team has to rush back to the visitors dressing room to get the correct one. Meanwhile, Robin van Persie is replaced by Ander Herrera for Manchester United. Not one of Van Persie's better games.

Manchester Untied fans are out of their seats. Robin van Persie's lob over the Saints defence sets up Angel Di Maria but instead of passing to the incoming Juan Mata, the former Real Madrid man has a go at goal. And it's a poor, poor attempt.

Rare chance as Steven Davis clips the ball into Manchester United's penalty area and Jose Fonte heads wide. Lots of shirt pulling going on inside the United area as that ball came in.

Wayne Rooney doesn't look particularly happy in midfield. He's been careless a couple of times with his passing and is struggling to create chances for Angel Di Maria and Robin van Persie. This game is devoid of goal mouth activity.

Eljero Elia's arrival in the Premier League has gone largely unnoticed outside Southampton but the winger is making a nuisance of himself at Old Trafford. He is certainly not lacking in confidence and has already caused Chris Smalling and Phil Jones problems.

First real shot in anger from the hosts. And it's from the boot of Angel Di Maria who fires well wide. United have yet to hit third gear. Saints will be pleased with this start.

Great vision by Toby Alderweireld to cut out Wayne Rooney's ball to Angel Di Maria but there's trouble for the Southampton man. He appears to have hurt a muscle and hobbles off. Florin Gardos is set to come on.

Lots of attack-minded players in the Manchester United side but there is always the danger that a rich forward line will leave their defence exposed, so it has proved on a couple of occasions, with Southampton perhaps a little unlucky not to be 1-0 up.

    Manchester United midfielder Ashley Young

It's gone from standing room only to almost empty in Manchester United's training ground treatment room. I say almost empty as Ashley Young remains absent with a hamstring problem that is likely to keep him out for between four and six weeks.

In early December it was reported that United had suffered 43 injuries in five months, including lengthy absences for Michael Carrick, Phil Jones, Rafael and Radamel Falcao.

But the club's over-worked medical team is finally getting some much needed breathing space - leaving boss Louis van Gaal with some tough selection decisions to make. For instance, there is no Radamel Falcao in today's 18.

  136. Double Dutch

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal (left) shakes hands with Southampton boss Ronald Koeman

Football in the Netherlands might still be in winter lockdown but for Dutch legends Louis van Gaal and Ronald Koeman this is no time for a break. The clock is ticking, the midway point of the campaign has passed and in 19 weeks time the identity of the 2015 Premier League champions will be confirmed.

Manchester United have an awful lot of catching up to do to make it a three-way battle for the title. Victory over Southampton is a must if they are to keep alive their faint hopes of catching Chelsea and Manchester City.

The Saints have frustrated Chelsea and Arsenal in their last two top-flight outings. Yet nothing will give Koeman greater satisfaction than seeing his side end compatriot Van Gaal's title push at Old Trafford once and for all.
