  1. Post update

It's time to step away from the PC, stretch and wonder when we'll see a few Scottish teams getting beyond the qualifying rounds of Europe's football competitions. Thanks very much indeed for navigating to BBC Sport's offering this evening. It's very much appreciated. All the best.

  2. Post update

OK, so well done to Hull City on their 2-1 win this evening. For Scottish football fans, there is only one team left in Europe - Celtic. As things stand, they are in the play-off round for the Europa League, but they might possibly receive a Champions League reprieve, depending on how Uefa punish Legia Warsaw for fielding an ineligible player.

  3. Post update

    St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright

"In the second half we didn't control the ball enough but didn't look in any danger. I can't praise the players enough for what they put in. To be unbeaten in four away games in Europe is some achievement but unfortunately it is not enough tonight. The squad isn't the biggest in terms of senior players. Their goal was a mistake - Gary (Miller) knows. There were a few tired legs out there tonight. They put in a shift. They have just fallen short. In reality, we lost the game at home. We'll regroup and we'll go again. If it is (Stevie May's last match for Saints), he has given us everything again tonight. He is a pleasure to work with."

  4. Post update

BBC Scotland football pundit Willie Miller

"When you come up against quality like that, there is very little you can do when they pass it by you like that."

  5. Post update

Hull will discover who they'll meet in the Europa League play-off round when the draw is made on Friday. It should be a cracking atmosphere at their next home tie, with the group stages of the Europa League the prize. Well done, Sone Aluko!

  6. Post update

    Derek McInnes continued

"We chased that next goal as if it was the last two or three minutes of the game. I said to the players that if Sociedad were going to put us out of Europe they would need to scrap for it and I think they did that. We have our heads held high. We have the supporters with us. We'll get the legs rested and get ready to go again."

  7. Post update

    Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes

"It was a magnificent goal by Reynolds. We wanted to make sure they had moments of doubt. We were a bit too enthusiastic. We were rushing it. We tried to score right away when we needed cool heads. They picked us off. We pushed a good side. I know they were concerned. I was delighted to watch my team play with such confidence and enthusiasm."

Mark Reynolds rises to head home Aberdeen's second goal, giving the fans hope, albeit short-lived, of a comeback.

Jack in Edinburgh: "The SPLF should ban these horrible horns immediately. Nothing more likely to empty football grounds."

  13. FULL-TIME

Aberdeen 2-3 Real Sociedad (agg 2-5)

The home fans give Aberdeen a standing ovation for their efforts against the team that finished seventh in La Liga last season. An excellent effort by the Scots but they ran out of steam and had no answer to the guile of Sociedad sub Canales.

  14. GOAL

Aberdeen 2-3 Real Sociedad (Bergara) (agg 2-5)

It's a sore one for Aberdeen to take as Sergio Canales flights a ball from the right on to the head of Bergara who gives Jamie Langfield no chance.

  15. FULL-TIME

Hull City 2-1 AS Trencin (agg 2-1)

Steve Bruce takes his men into the play-off round for the Europa League with a victory at home to the Slovaks, who gave the English side an almighty fright with a second-minute goal.

  16. GOAL

Aberdeen 2-2 Real Sociedad (Prieto pen) (agg 2-4)

Xabi Prieto scores from the spot with a casual chip into the middle of the goal, as Jamie Langfield dives helplessly to his left.

  17. PENALTY

Real Sociedad have a penalty after Shaleum Logan concedes the spot kick.

  18. Post update

Sone Aluko slams home Hull's second against AS Trencin

Sone Aluko slams home Hull's second against AS Trencin to put the home side in control of the tie.

  19. Post update

And it's the same player, the elegant Canales, who slides through the Dons' defence and cracks a shot just wide of the other side of the Aberdeen goal. Aberdeen can't get hold of the ball just now.

  20. Post update

Real Sociedad's Sergio Canales gets on the ball on the edge of the box and curls a lovely shot just wide of Jamie Langfield's right-hand post. That would have killed the tie off had it gone in but the Dons have 11 minutes to score twice.

  21. Join the debate at #bbcsportscot

Toniwater: "#bbcsportscot Canales on to close this out, he's a class player but has been hampered by injuries. Super effort by The Dons!"

  22. Post update

    Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes punches the air in delight as Mark Reynolds heads home the Dons' second goal.

  23. GOAL

Hull City 2-1 AS Trencin (Aluko)

What a precious goal that could be for Hull by Sone Aluko. There are only 10 minutes to go at the KC Stadium.

  24. Post update

Real Sociedad are resorting to hoofing the ball up the park. They are definitely rattled but as the Reds push forward they will be a danger on the counter-attack.

  25. Post update

Real Sociedad's Castro is off to be replaced by Sergio Canales. For the Dons, Adam Rooney comes on for Peter Pawlett. Rooney will team up with David Goodwillie up front.

  26. Post update

Peter Pawlett follows up on David Goodwillie's saved effort to score Aberdeen's first goal at Pittodrie.

Peter Pawlett follows up on David Goodwillie's saved effort to score Aberdeen's first goal at Pittodrie.

  27. Post update

The attendance at Pittodrie is 17,676, all but 200 of whom are roaring Aberdeen on. "If they get another goal this stadium is just going to explode," opines BBC Scotland football pundit Billy Dodds.

  28. GOAL

    Aberdeen 2-1 Real Sociedad (Reynolds)

Well, well. Niall McGinn makes a tremendous run down the left wing and lofts the ball over for Mark Reynolds, who rises well to nod the ball home. Pittodrie goes bonkers. Now they need two more in the final 33 minutes.

  29. Post update

So, a quick summary. Hull are tied at 1-1 with Slovak side AS Trencin on the night and on aggregate. The Tigers must score again or they are heading out on the away goals rule. Aberdeen are level with Real Sociedad at Pittodrie this evening - it's 1-1 - but they trail 3-1 on aggregate so they must score three goals in the remaining 36 minutes without conceding. St Johnstone drew 1-1 in Slovakia with Sparta Trnava but are out 3-2 on aggregate. Not a great situation all round.

  30. YELLOW CARD

Jonny Hayes is shown a yellow card for a bad tackle, lunging in on the Real Sociedad player after being denied a soft penalty claim.

  31. Post update

It's great to see Pittodrie so busy but my-oh-my, those hooters are murder. At least they'll keep the seagulls at bay. Aberdeen kick off for the second half. They require three goals.

  32. Text us on 80295

Jenni: "Tonight could have been the last time we saw Stevie May in a St Johnstone shirt. I hope it's not, but if it is he has been a tremendous player for the Saints, and he would leave with the best wishes of all our club's fans."

  34. Post update

"If Aberdeen get another goal anything is possible but it's a huge ask because of that away goal."

  35. Post update

Xabi Prieto's goal for Real Sociedad looks to have ended Aberdeen's chances in the Europa League unless they can score three without reply in the second half

Xabi Prieto's goal for Real Sociedad looks to have ended Aberdeen's chances in the Europa League unless they can score three without reply in the second half.

  36. HALF-TIME

Aberdeen 1-1 Real Sociedad (agg 1-3)

  37. GOAL

Aberdeen 1-1 Real Sociedad (Pawlett) (agg 1-3)

David Goodwillie half-hits a shot at goal in a congested penalty area and his shot is parried by the Spanish goalkeeper, but in steps Peter Pawlett to smash the ball into the net and level the score on the night. Aberdeen need

  38. Post update

David Goodwillie passes for Niall McGinn and his final ball is as honking as the 5,000 Aberdeen hooters as it floats into the arms of the Real Sociedad keeper.

  39. HALF-TIME

    Hull 1-1 AS Trencin

  40. FULL-TIME

Spartak Trnava 1-1 St Johnstone (agg 3-2)

It was a brave effort by Saints and they were given a boost when Stevie May scored before half-time. However, a mistake by Gary Miller allowed the Slovakians in on goal and they proceed to the play-off round of the Europa League. We'll have reaction on the website as soon as possible. Our reporter Jim Spence will be chasing Saints boss Tommy Wright for a word.

  41. Post update

Now, here's an interesting development... Legia Warsaw, who defeated Celtic in the Champions League, have admitted they are under investigation for fielding an ineligible player.

The Polish champions released a statement on their website: "In connection with the second-leg match in the third qualifying round of the Champions League between Celtic and Legia Warsaw, Uefa has opened an investigation on the participation by Bartosz Bereszyński."

  42. Post update

There are four minutes of injury time. Can Stevie May conjure up a chance or score perhaps his final goal for the club?

  43. Post update

We're into the final minute in Slovakia. Come on, Saints! One goal to take it into 30 minutes of extra time!

  44. GOAL

    Aberdeen 0-1 Real Sociedad (Prieto)

A corner kick is floated in towards the near post of Jamie Langfield's goal and Real Sociedad captain Xabi Prieto manages to flick the ball behind him and into the net after 28 minutes. An uphill struggle now for the Dons as they are 3-0 behind on aggregate. They have to score four times.

  45. Post update

At Pittodrie, the danger of the Spanish side is apparent as they break quickly from an Aberdeen corner, but Shaleum Logan is up to the task at the edge of Jamie Langfield's box and it remains goalless.

  46. GOAL

Spartak Trnava 1-1 St Johnstone (Mikovic)

A defensive error allows Martin Mikovic to race in on keeper Alan Mannus and his goal means St Johnstone have to score to take the game into extra-time.

  47. Post update

St Johnstone have 10 minutes in which to find a second goal or they are heading out on the away goals rule. It's 2-2 on aggregate but the Slovakians, remember, scored twice in Perth.

  48. Post update

BBC Radio Scotland commentator Liam McLeod

"Jack was just offside, marginally, but ultimately a good decision. The Aberdeen support sense that something good is going to happen."

  49. GOAL

Hull 1-1 AS Trencin (Ahmed Elmohamady 27)

  50. DISALLOWED GOAL

Aberdeen's Ryan Jack has the ball in the net from a Niall McGinn corner, but he and two of his team-mates are judged off-side.

  51. Post update

Willo Flood has a bit of a nightmare in front of his own goal. A really weak pass-back is intercepted by a Real Sociedad player but to the relief of the Aberdeen fans, the shot is blocked. Still goalless.

  52. GREAT SAVE!

Ivan Schranz heads the ball downwards towards the St Johnstone goal and Alan Mannus makes a superb save to keep his team in front.

  53. Post update

The Aberdeen support have maintained the blowing of the horns the club have handed out to the fans and there's plenty of singing mixed in too. What a great atmosphere at Pittodrie.

  54. Post update

Peter Pawlett is brought down a couple of feet from the left-hand edge of the Real Sociedad box but the resultant free-kick is poor. It's been a really frantic start to the game at Pittodrie in the opening five minutes with both sides passing well on what looks like an excellent surface.

  55. Post update

    Stevie May

Stevie May has given the Perth Saints a fighting chance in Slovakia with his goal just before half-time.

  56. Join the debate at #bbcsportscot

Robert Spencer: "#bbcsportscot Finnbogason at Sociedad was a great striker with Heerenveen last season, only Ronaldo and Suarez scored more goals last season"

  57. KICK-OFF

Aberdeen and Real Sociedad have kicked off their match in lovely sunshine at Pittodrie.

  58. Post update

Angus the Bull, the Dons mascot, is on his hind legs imploring the home fans to make plenty of noise.

  59. Text us on 80295

Anonymous: "I don't think anyone is meaning to offend Rotherham, but like the Saints, they don't get the headlines that other clubs get so a lot of people are asking whether an offer from the Millers matches St Johnstone's profile rather than Stevie May's goals - if they get through this, the profile of both will rocket."

  60. Join the debate at #bbcsportscot

John McEnerney: "#bbcsportscot The Dons wont get much change out of RS, top 5 side in La Liga & as Canales showed they've class & strength in depth! However, fair play to St Johnstone, they've made a game of this! Crucial time to score, lets see how both sides react in the 2nd half. Game on!"

  61. Post update

BBC Scotland football pundit Allan Preston

"It looks to me like Spartak are happy to settle for this and go through on away goals."

  62. GOAL

Hull 0-1 AS Trencin (Tomas Malec)

It's the worst start possible for Steve Bruce's side as they concede in the second minute. At least the Tigers have almost the whole match to put the situation right.

  63. KICK-OFF

Hull are under way against AS Trencin at the KC Stadium.

  64. Post update

    Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes

"We're playing with two strikers tonight, which hopefully will curtail at least one of their full-backs. We've got pace in Pawlett and Hayes. Hopefully it causes them problems and the momentum goes our way. They'll anticipate us coming out the traps. The onus is on us to force the issue. If they get that goal then the task near impossible but we're not thinking that way."

  65. Post update

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes on the 5,000 "Aberdeen hooters" that have been issued to the fans for the visit of Real Sociedad: "When I first got told about vuvuzelas I thought it was a signing we were making!"

  66. Post update

Summer signing Robert Snodgrass will make his full Hull debut as Steve Bruce switches three players for the visit of Slovakia's AS Trencin. The former Norwich midfielder appeared off the bench in the goalless first leg in Slovakia, but is in the starting line-up at a sold-out KC Stadium.

David Meyler makes way for the Scotland international, with Bruce also replacing striker Sone Aluko with Yannick Sagbo and fielding winger Robbie Brady instead of Liam Rosenior.

  67. LINE-UPS

Aberdeen: Langfield, Logan, Reynolds, Anderson, Considine, Flood, Jack, Hayes, McGinn, Goodwillie, Pawlett. Subs: Brown, Taylor, Monakana, Rooney, Smith, Robson, Low.

  68. HALF-TIME

    Spartak Trnava 0-1 St Johnstone

  69. LINE-UPS

Hull City: McGregor, Bruce, Chester, Davies, Elmohamady, Huddlestone, Snodgrass, Livermore, Brady, Long, Sagbo. Subs: Harper, Rosenior, Meyler, McShane, Ince, Aluko, Quinn.

AS Trencin: Volesak, Cogley, Ramon, Klescik, Malek, Kubik, Hajradinovic, Lobotka, Misak, Moses, Holubek. Subs: Semrinec, Skovajsa, Rundic, Baris, Mondek, Opatovsky.

  70. Post update

    BBC Scotland pundit Allan Preston

"You could see it coming. Tam Scobbie waltzed through three of four 4 Spartak players, a cute pass and then a wonderful strike from Stevie May. St Johnstone just need to get to half-time. Brilliant."

  71. GOAL

Spartak Trnava 0-1 St Johnstone (May)

With only three minutes until half-time, long-haired striker Stevie May pops the ball on to his let foot and hammers a shot into the net, via a welcome deflection, to give St Johnstone hope.

  72. Post update

BBC Scotland football pundit Allan Preston

"Tommy Wright is out trying to get St Johnstone to calm down. The last 10 minutes it's been all Spartak Trnava."

  73. Post update

The draw for the Europa League play-off round is tomorrow. I'm thinking Hull might be the only one of the trio of British teams in action tonight to get through. I really hope all three make it.

  74. Post update

We're half an hour away from Hull making their home European debut. The Tigers are playing in Europe as a reward for reaching last season's FA Cup final, which they lost 3-2 to Arsenal.

  75. Text us on 80295

David in Rotherham: "'Stevie May is a top, top talent, a real good player. Is Rotherham the right club for him?' - Do the people who report at your games know anything about football? So patronising towards the smaller clubs. Does he know what the Millers have achieved in the last 2 years? With Pringle and co delivering crosses he would get 20 goals per season for us minimum!!"

  76. Post update

BBC Scotland football pundit Allan Preston

"This is the perfect away performance in Europe so far. The shape is good. The only problem is Scobbie has a rag in his hand wiping the blood away constantly."

  77. Post update

Poor Tam Scobbie is being treated for a cut to his head. Saints won't want to make any changes so early in the game.

  78. Post update

    Stevie May

Striker Stevie May could be playing his last match for St Johnstone with Rotherham described by Saints boss Tommy Wright as "persistent" in their pursuit of him.

  79. Post update

Oooooh! So close for the Perth Saints as Trnava keeper Dobrivoj Rusov makes a fingertip save to deny Stevie May.

  80. Post update

BBC Scotland football pundit Allan Preston

"They look absolutely terrified of Stevie May. He has scored so many goals for St Johnstone. There are two or three men round him all the time. They are a very sharp side. They break quickly."

  81. Post update

Aberdeen have made two changes from the first leg last week, with Andrew Considine in for Barry Robson and David Goodwillie replacing Adam Rooney.

Looks like a starting 11 of: Langfield, Logan, Anderson, Reynolds, Considine, Flood, Jack, McGinn, Pawlett, Hayes, Goodwillie.

  82. Post update

My Saints-supporting friend feels Spartak Trnava looked a good side in the first leg. He's pessimistic about his team's chances of reaching the play-off round but I think he's just too scared to be confident. A crowd of 4,000 are watching the game.

  83. Post update

We're hearing Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes will give striker David Goodwillie his first start for the Dons against Real Sociedad this evening. Looks like Adam Rooney is the man to make way.

  84. Text us on 80295

David in Glasgow: "See the dross Celtic have signed for up front recently? Stevie May and Johnny are far superior to them. They could've done a job for Celtic and be improved as well. There's a lot of talent in Scotland, ignored by Celtic."

  85. KICK-OFF

And we're off in Slovakia. The weather is glorious, reports commentator Jim Spence, and there's a great atmosphere in the ground. Perfect, surely, for a Saints comeback... Remember, they trail 2-1 from the first leg in Perth.

  86. Post update

Now, kick-off approaches in Slovakia. Spartak Trnava are playing 60km away from their home ground.

  87. Post update

BBC Scotland football pundit Allan Preston on Stevie May

"He's a top, top talent, a real good player. Is Rotherham the right club for him? He needs to go to a club that will create chances for him, because he is a goalscorer."

  88. Post update

    St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright

"We are looking to get as many people forward as possible to cause them problems. Stevie May is very much our player. They are all motivated. We have got to keep the ball better. We have to get our full backs up the pitch. If we retain the ball better we can cause them problems. We'll set up 4-1-4-1."

  89. LINE-UPS

Spartak Trnava: Rusov, Siva, Janecka, Bortel, Toth, Conka, Mikovic, Vlasko, Casado Garcia, Sabo, Schranz. Subs: Strapak, Grabez, Richnak, Vyskocil, Spalek, Mikinic, Kasaj.

St Johnstone: Mannus, Mackay, Scobbie, Caddis, Miller, Brian Easton, Millar, McDonald, Wotherspoon, MacLean, May. Subs: Banks, Wright, Anderson, Brown, Croft, Kane, O'Halloran.

  90. Post update

Our first match is in Slovakia where St Johnstone are trying to overturn a 2-1 defeat by Spartak Trnava. The kick-off for that one is in quarter of an hour.

  91. Post update

A very good evening, all. Like nibbling on a Viennese whirl, we have a taste of the continent for you as we sample three Europa League third-round second-leg matches.
