Graham Last: Not getting carried away or anything... But Watford will be in the Champions League in 5 years.

Are you sure you're not getting carried away Graham?

  3. Post update

    Ipswich Town 2-1 Fulham

That's still just five wins in 2014 for Fulham then. Much improvement needed if they are to bounce back into the top flight at the first attempt.

  4. FULL-TIME

    Ipswich Town 2-1 Fulham

It's all over. The new-look Fulham end their first game back in the second division for 13 years pointless, but there were plenty of seeds of encouragement in the display of those youngsters. The Championship is a physical division to go with that many kids but Felix Magath was bold with his selection.

Ipswich's front two just had enough to make the difference.

Patrick Roberts is in again, he fires in a low shot which Tommy Smith just about blocks. That goal has given Fulham plenty of confidence. Can they nick a point now?

    Ipswich Town 2-1 Fulham

    James Scowcroft

Ex-Ipswich & Leicester striker on BBC London 94.9

"Fulham have got a bit of luck, I don't know if they deserved that goal. Tim Hoogland has cut in and swung his foot at it, but it has hit Tommy Smith and gone in. Fulham have five minutes left to snatch a point and that would be harsh on Ipswich."

  10. CLOSE!

    Ipswich Town 2-1 Fulham

Almost the equaliser! Fulham counter smartly again, Scott Parker leading the troops forwards, the ball comes to Patrick Roberts, who loses his man with a neat turn and fires just wide from 20 yards.

    THREE MINUTES left...

  11. GOAL

Ipswich Town 2-1 Fulham - Tim Hoogland (86 mins)

Out of nothing, Fulham have a lifeline! Right-back Tim Hoogland continues to bomb on, he cuts inside and hits a left-footed shot which spins off the shoulder of Tommy Smith and into the net. A debut goal!

  12. Post update

    Ipswich Town 2-0 Fulham

Fulham win a free-kick which is whipped in by Kostas Stafylidis, but the big men in the middle can't convert. Much promise about the Fulham showing today, but they have rarely troubled Dean Gerken in the Ipswich goal.

    We have seven minutes left.

  13. CLOSE!

    Ipswich Town 2-0 Fulham

Lovely stuff! David McGoldrick spreads the ball out wide to Luke Chambers, he skins his man and stands up a cross for Anthony Wordworth to attack, but he fluffs his lines and heads over the top. The move deserved better.

  14. Post update

    Ipswich Town 2-0 Fulham

    James Scowcroft

Ex-Ipswich & Leicester striker on BBC London 94.9

"I don't think Mick McCarthy will have a more comfortable victory than this all season. I'm not sure what shape Fulham are playing and they are very narrow.

"They don't look like they have any pace in the team at all."

  15. Post update

    Ipswich Town 2-0 Fulham

Patrick Roberts is the jewel in the crown of the Fulham academy, with some suggestions that teams of the ilk of Real Madrid and Barcelona are keeping tabs on him. I'm sure their scouts will be watching this one on a Saturday tea-time. Maybe just catch up on the DVDs.

Fulham have a shot but it's a horror from Moussa Dembele, high, wide and not too handsome. Into the last 15...

Sion Edmonds: To do well in the Championship you need experience. Fulham are clearly lacking in that department with such a young squad.

Francinee: David McGoldrick is back! Best bit of news any town fan could have! GOALLLLL

  17. SUBSTITUTION

    Ipswich Town 2-0 Fulham

Cole Skuse is replaced by Anthony Wordsworth for Ipswich, while Fulham send on another from their conveyor belt in the guise of Patrick Roberts. He replaces Shaun Hutchinson, who has not had a debut to remember.

  18. Post update

    Ipswich Town 2-0 Fulham

Before today Fulham were unbeaten in their last five opening day matches, keeping a clean sheet on each occasion (W3 D2), while Ipswich have scored in each of their last 12 fixtures on the opening day of the season, winning six (D2 L4).

  21. Post update

    Ipswich Town 2-0 Fulham

    James Scowcroft

Ex-Ipswich & Leicester striker on BBC London 94.9

"It is a long way back for Fulham and that was an awful goal to concede. It has been a horrible afternoon for Fulham and the way they have tried to play has been too intricate, through the middle, but that has played straight into Ipswich's hands. There has been no movement from the front two. Ipswich have out-worked Fulham today."

  22. BreakingTRANSFER NEWS

    Vermaelen joins Barcelona

Confirmed - Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has joined Barcelona. Not a bad move.

Full story to follow on the BBC Sport website...

  23. GOAL

Ipswich Town 2-0 Fulham - David McGoldrick (61 mins)

What a return! His first appearance for six months and David McGoldrick is on the scoresheet again! Fulham centre-back Shaun Hutchinson is bullied off the ball by Daryl Murphy for the second time, and it leads to a second goal. Murphy shrugs off the defender and puts in a low cross, it's half cleared to McGoldrick, who puts his foot through it and fires in with a slight deflection.

  24. On the move

    Ipswich Town 1-0 Fulham

While this game has been going on Fulham have jettisoned another player, as Dutch keeper Maarten Stekelenburg has joined Monaco on loan for the season. Expect a few more to leave before the end of August. Bryan Ruiz?

The current crop have half an hour to salvage something from this one.

  25. SUBSTITUTION

    Ipswich Town 1-0 Fulham

Another change for Fulham as Ross McCormack is replaced by another youngster, Cauley Woodrow.

  26. Post update

    Ipswich Town 1-0 Fulham

Thomas Eisfeld - a summer signing from Arsenal - has made a difference to Fulham's play. He has added some real drive and purpose right through the middle and always wants the ball.

  27. CLOSE!

    Ipswich Town 1-0 Fulham

Good stuff from Fulham. Thomas Eisfeld drives through the middle and finds Ross McCormack on the left, his cross is half cleared and Kostas Stafylidis absolutely smashes in a shot from 25 yards which fizzes over the crossbar.

  28. Post update

    Ipswich Town 1-0 Fulham

Ipswich fans will be keen to see David McGoldrick back in action this afternoon, he was instrumental to their fortunes before a serious knee injury last February ended his season. The striker almost gets in behind the Fulham defence but is understandably rusty and loses out.

  30. KICK-OFF

  33. Manager reaction

    Millwall 2-0 Leeds

    BBC Radio 5 live

    Ian Holloway

Millwall boss Ian Holloway speaking to BBC Radio 5 live after his side beat Leeds 2-0: "We had double their shots on target and we have done that to Leeds United and I am really pleased for my team.

"People win 6-0 and 8-0 on the opening day and go on to have bad seasons so I just want to be consistent for my lads, if I was allowed a bet I would, because our odds to get relegated are a disgrace.

"I just want people to show me and my team some respect. Van Gogh is a decent painter now isn't he but when he was alive he was just a bloke with half an ear."

  34. Post update

    Ipswich Town 1-0 Fulham

    James Scowcroft

Ex-Ipswich & Leicester striker on BBC London 94.9

"We have hardly seen Fulham's front two of Ross McCormack and Moussa Dembele. The only chance they have had was when Dean Gerken spilled the ball and Dembele followed in, but it was saved.

"If McCormack does not improve I would take him off and bring on Cauley Woodrow. McCormack has been starved of the ball and has had to come deep to get the ball, but you don't want to see him in deep positions."

  35. Manager reaction

    Millwall 2-0 Leeds

    BBC Radio 5 live

Leeds United head coach Dave Hockaday after seeing his side lose 2-0 at Millwall: "I wasn't happy with our performance in the first half, we didn't get up to the pace and they looked hungrier. Second half we made a game of it and had chances we really should be hitting the net.

"There is lots to work on but I have learned a lot about the players because we were playing in a cauldron here and some coped better than others.

"This is what I am used too [Championship football], this is where I think I belong and tactically I think we got it right.

"I am in charge, I am the head man and I will take responsibility."

  36. HALF-TIME

    Ipswich Town 1-0 Fulham

Fulham's youngsters started well but one slip let in Daryl Murphy and Ipswich now look on song.

  37. Manager reaction

    Middlesbrough 2-0 Birmingham

    BBC Radio 5 live

Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live about striker Kiki, who scored on his debut: "Kiki (Enrique Garcia) I know him well. He will score goals for us for sure but the most important thing is the team and that they play in the way we want to play."

  38. SUBSTITUTION

    Ipswich Town 1-0 Fulham

An early change for Ipswich as striker Balint Bajner is replaced by David McGoldrick, who makes his first appearance since February.

  39. Breaking transfer news

    Gary Medel joins Inter

Some expected transfer news just in - Cardiff's Chilean defender/midfielder Gary Medel has joined Internazionale. Medel was not involved in Cardiff's 1-1 draw with Blackburn last night.

  40. Manager reaction

    Nottm Forest 2-0 Blackpool

    BBC Radio 5 live

    Jose Riga

Blackpool boss Jose Riga speaking to BBC Radio 5 live following his side's 2-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest: "What they did in the second half was good. We have only played one friendly game and some players only arrived yesterday so they have done well.

"This morning the situation [unregistered players] was even worse because we only had nine players qualified, but during the day we managed to get more. There were two 17-year-olds on the bench who were scholars.

"It was a difficult situation so I am happy that the players have not had any physical problems after only playing once in pre season.

"I think that compared to all the other teams I am the only one to have this preparation. The Championship is a tough league and I knew we could not be ready for today but I am hoping we can be ready soon and add more players."

  41. Blackpool Rocked

There was a lot of chat this afternoon that Blackpool had not managed to register all of their players on time. Here's some clarity...

  42. Manager reaction

    Huddersfield 0-4 Bournemouth

    BBC Radio 5 live

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "In many senses it was the perfect away performance because we scored the goals at key times. We were professional in our approach and saw the game out.

"Callum Wilson took his goals very well. He showed his strength and pace and movement, so a great debut for him. The two goals will do his confidence the world of good."

  43. YELLOW CARD

    Ipswich Town 1-0 Fulham

Ipswich now looking the better side, that goal has shaken the Fulham youngsters. That has also shaken a Fulham youngster, as Luke Hyam slams into the ankles of Moussa Dembele and is shown a yellow card.

Into the last five minutes of the first half.

  44. Manager reaction

    Millwall 2-0 Leeds

    Dave Hockaday

Leeds head coach David Hockaday: "We did not start well in the first half. We lacked intensity and purpose to our play. I was delighted to get in at 1-0 to be perfectly honest. We had chances though to get something out of the game, we had them on their heels later in the second half.

"It is one game. We are looking to improve. Millwall have beaten us 2-0. It is all about moments and we did not have moments. We had a go and certainly had the chances to equalise in the second half.

"He (club owner Massimo Cellino) came with us on the coach and he is coming at the end. We will talk tomorrow, have a chat and see how we can strengthen."

  45. Post update

    Ipswich Town 1-0 Fulham

    James Scowcroft

Ex-Ipswich & Leicester striker on BBC London 94.9

"The goal came against the run of play and it was great play from Luke Hyam to rob Scott Parker. But Shaun Hutchinson will be very disappointed as Daryl Murphy is not the quickest but has got away from him.

"Ipswich will be absolutely delighted and the game needed a goal as it had gone a bit stale. But the goal has given Ipswich a massive lift."

  46. Post update

    Ipswich Town 1-0 Fulham

"One nil to the Tractor Boys" is the chant at Portman Road, followed up by a query as to whether the supporters of rivals Norwich City are aware of the current score.

The first East Anglian derby of the season is on 23rd August by the way. Fierce? Just a bit.

  47. GOAL

Ipswich Town 1-0 Fulham - Daryl Murphy (32 mins)

Fulham have been slick so far but the kids are blown away by one positive move from Ipswich. Scott Parker has the ball taken off his toes by Luke Hyam, who drives forward and finds Daryl Murphy 25 yards out. Murphy squares up Shaun Hutchinson, who gets in a horrible position and Murphy skins him before slamming past Jesse Joronen at his near post.

  48. CLOSE!

    Ipswich Town 0-0 Fulham

Cole Skuse loves a long-ranger. The Ipswich midfielder unleashes a dig again from 25 yards and the ball skims the far corner.

  49. Post update

    Ipswich Town 0-0 Fulham

    James Scowcroft

Ex-Ipswich & Leicester striker on BBC London 94.9

"Scott Parker has been the best player on the pitch so far. You can see the class and quality he has had throughout his career. He is good on the ball and always knows what's going on around him.

"But we have not seen much of Ross McCormack yet, he hasn't really got involved."

    Ipswich 0-0 Fulham

The bad - and then the very good from Dean Gerken! The Ipswich keeper spills Chris David's low shot but recovers brilliantly to shut out Moussa Dembele's follow up. A great second save.

To eradicate any confusion Moussa Dembele (plural s) is Fulham's 18-year-old striker of French descent. Mousa Dembele (single s) is Tottenham's 27-year-old ex-Fulham midfielder of Belgian descent.

    There's only two Mous(s)a Dembeles...

  52. Post update

    Ipswich 0-0 Fulham

Good goalkeeping from Dean Gerken, leaping high and proud of the huddle of bodies in front of him to fist Chris David's cross away. Fulham looking slick still, but £11m striker Ross McCormack has been quiet.

  53. Friendlies round-up

The Football League may have returned to business but some Premier League sides were also in action as they continued their preparations for the new season.

Premier League new boys Burnley secured a morale-boosting 3-1 win against Italian Serie A side Hellas Verona. Matthew Taylor, Lukas Jutkiewicz and Ross Wallace with the goals for the Clarets.

Leicester, who won the Championship last season, also secured a victory, Wes Morgan's header proving enough to beat Werder Bremen 1-0.

In other games, West Ham edged Sampdoria 3-2, Everton lost 3-1 to SC Paderborn, QPR were beaten 1-0 by PAOK, Swansea suffered a 3-0 defeat to Villarreal while Aston Villa and Crystal Palace drew 0-0 with Parma and Augsburg respectively.

  54. CLOSE!

    Ipswich 0-0 Fulham

Fulham absolutely bossing possession at the moment, Scott Parker conducting the play, grateful for the acres of young legs around him in midfield. If the youngsters' quality matches their energy Felix Magath may be on to something with this selection.

Ipswich don't see much of the ball but go close with a lovely effort from Cole Skuse, hitting a dipping strike over the top from 20 yards.

  56. Manager reaction

    Derby 1-0 Rotherham

    BBC Radio 5 live

Derby manager Steve McClaren on BBC Radio 5 live, after his side beat Rotherham 1-0: "The result is very important, we always look for a performance but there was enough good play that shows we will get better and grow from this.

"We started unbelievably well but then we started to force it, we didn't use the width enough but there were a lot of good things and it was nice to get the three points.

"Rotherham were excellent, they were very disciplined and worked hard and they made it very difficult for us. If they keep playing like that they will have no problems."

  57. CLOSE!

    Ipswich 0-0 Fulham

The Craven Cottage Kids have started well, breaking with real pace whenever Ipswich lose the ball. One rapid counter down the right ends with Chris David dragging his low shot wide from 25 yards. Fulham boss Felix Magath will be happy enough with this start.

  58. Manager reaction

    Carlisle 0-1 Luton Town

    BBC Radio 5 live

Luton Town boss John Still on BBC Radio 5 live, following his side's winning return to the Football League: "I am delighted to have won and the travelling support was absolutely brilliant, we have been waiting a long time for this game.

"The players handled the game well, there was a lot of media attention on them but they coped well with it. It was a very tough game but we got the win.

"I think we got in a winning habit last year and it's important that we try to get back into that habit again this season."

  59. Post update

    Ipswich 0-0 Fulham

Rookie Fulham goalkeeper Jesse Joronen has made one good save early on but he looks a bit shaky with the ball at his feet, twice scuffing the ball out of play under pressure from the Ipswich frontline.

  60. Reaction

    Millwall 2-0 Leeds

    David Pleat

Former Tottenham manager on BBC Radio 5 live:

"Millwall looked solid and like they could really compete this season, but Leeds on the other hand did not really play as a unit.

"They had nothing up front and didn't test the Millwall goalkeeper once. Millwall away is never an easy game but Leeds don't look like they have the quality to make a push for the championship this season. I was disappointed by their midfield and territorially Millwall controlled things for around 70 minutes of the play."

  61. Post update

    Scottish football latest

It was a good start in the Scottish Premiership for Inverness CT and Motherwell, who beat relegation favourites Hamilton 2-0, and 10-man St Mirren 1-0 respectively. Dundee and Kilmarnock shared the spoils in the day's other match, drawing 1-1 at Dens Park. However, perhaps the biggest news of the day came in the Championship, where Hibernian goalkeeper Mark Oxley scored with an almighty thump up the park.

  62. GREAT SAVE!

    Ipswich 0-0 Fulham

In superhero movie style, it's very much a reboot for Fulham this afternoon. New faces playing familiar roles.

Cameron Burgess has shown some neat touches in the centre of midfield, with full-backs Nikolay Bodurov and Kostas Stafylidis providing the width.

But it's Fulham goalkeeper Jesse Joronen who makes the first save of the game, tipping over Christophe Berra's header.

  63. Manager reaction

    Nottm Forest 2-0 Blackpool

Nottingham Forest manager Stuart Pearce, following his side's 2-0 win over Blackpool: "All things considered I think it was a good result and we will build on that. We play Tranmere on Tuesday, I have seen them play in pre-season and I know it will be a very tough game but hopefully we can build on today's performance.

"I thought we played very well in the first half but we tailed off in the second half, which disappointed me. I want my players to know we have to set our stall out, but there were mitigating circumstances today."

  64. Perfect return for Pearce

    Nottingham Forest 2-0 Blackpool

    Stuart Pearce

Stuart Pearce, who made 401 appearances for Nottingham Forest before taking temporary charge in 1996, could hardly have asked for a better result on his return to the City Ground.

Forest ran out comfortable winners against a Blackpool side who, admittedly, were out of sorts given their struggles to put together a matchday squad.

  65. KICK-OFF

    Ipswich 0-0 Fulham

We are under way at Portman Road, with Fulham's new-look back four making a shaky start and conceding a corner inside 20 seconds...

Hold on, late drama at Orient. Darius Henderson has just given the hosts Leyton Orient some hope with a goal from close range with minutes left. They now trail Chesterfield 2-1.

Any late drama still to come?

  94. MISSED PENALTY

You can tell the Football League is back in Cambridge. The ground is twice as full. The press box is twice as cramped. And the football is twice as good. Josh Coulson has spent his whole career at Cambridge United and until today had never played a game in the Football League. He's just scored Cambridge's first League Two goal in nine years. You'd be right to assume that the Abbey has gone bonkers.

But relegated Tranmere are not having a happy start to life in League Two as Keith Lowe's header puts York 1-0 ahead.

  104. GOAL

Wigan 1-2 Reading - Sean Morrison (77 mins)

Chris Weale comes rushing out to try and stop Harry Forrester but the tricky midfielder rounds the Glovers keeper and easily slots home. Yeovil finished bottom of the second tier last term and haven't won a game since 5 April.

    Huddersfield v Bournemouth (15:00 BST)

Lee Peltier makes his first start for Huddersfield since 2011 after returning to the club in the summer, and Radoslaw Majewski plays after joining on loan from Nottingham Forest, while centre-half Matt Crooks makes his full debut.

But there is no place for midfielder Adam Clayton, who has been linked with a move to either Middlesbrough or Brighton, and striker James Vaughan misses out because of a calf injury.

Bournemouth, who finished 10th in the Championship last season, hand a full debut to Callum Wilson after his summer transfer from Coventry. Goalkeeper Lee Camp has recovered from a thigh injury to start for the Cherries, with new signings Junior Stanislas and Dan Gosling among the substitutes.

Tim Arstall: Surprised about how little has been made of Birmingham's 100% pre-season record, really think we could step up this season.

Nottingham Forest v Blackpool (15:00 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 live

Nottingham Forest manager Stuart Pearce, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "I hope the fans will be looking forward to watching the team play. We have done a lot of rebuilding here, a lot of players have left and we have bought in eight players. The chairman has backed me every time I have asked him to spend money.

"Today is an exciting day to be coming back here and managing this club but I want the fans to go away being pleased with firstly hopefully a win and secondly the performance."

On the reports about his relationship with chairman Fawaz Al-Hasawi: "We have never not been friends, I couldn't hide my disappointment [on the sales] but I think it has made us stronger. It has made me and the chairman stronger and the club as a whole because the one thing we both want is the success of the club."

Nottingham Forest v Blackpool (15:00 BST)

BBC Sport's Owen Phillips at the City Ground: "Nottingham Forest manager Stuart Pearce has been quick to put the onus back on his players after what he politely described as a "difficult week" with the sale of Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles and a very public disagreement with chairman Fawaz Al Hasawi.

"Darlow starts in Pearce's first game after being loaned back from Newcastle (Lascelles is injured) - as do the two players who helped placate the new boss by signing late this week, record buy Britt Assombalonga and winger Michail Antonio. Fellow new boys Michael Mancienne, Chris Burke and Matt Fryatt also make their debuts and Chris Cohen is back after injury."

Matt Derbyshire is handed his Rotherham debut by manager Steve Evans at Derby this afternoon. The much-travelled 28-year-old is now onto his ninth club and is joined in the Millers' line-up by fellow new-boys Kirk Broadfoot and Paul Green.
