  1. Goodbye!

Let's come back and try this again tomorrow, shall we?

Stephan's report from a truncated day is here and the Test Match Special podcast will be available for you shortly.

Today at the Test will be on BBC Two from 19:00 BST, and we'll be back tomorrow, when it'll be light enough for England to bowl their seamers.

    Until then!

  2. Post update

    Azhar Mahmood

Former Pakistan all-rounder on Test Match Special

From a Pakistani point of view, Shadab Khan and Yasir Shah must be licking their fingers right now. They have seen some turn on the first day of a Test.

  3. 'Absolute nonsense'

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Why should it take 20,000-strong crowd, a rowdy crowd making a beer snake or two, to make them play on? Test cricket needs to have an answer.

Throughout this summer of cricket, to think that cricket has done so well to get the game on but keeps walking off. It just doesn't make sense.

You spend a fortune getting the teams over to play and then don't play. It's absolute nonsense.

  4. Post update

Still, the rain delay wasn't all bad.

  5. 'When will Test cricket learn?'

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

There's no point us even talking about the lights and them going off. We talk about it all the time. It seems the conditions have to be perfect for them to stay on the field.

I can't get my head round the fact that TV companies are paying a huge amount of money, fans are watching the only Test cricket going on in the world from home, yet we've lost out on so much cricket.

There were two off-spinners bowling and we went off for bad light. It just doesn't make sense.

When is Test match cricket going to learn?

  6. Post update

Chris Woakes was the pick of England's bowlers, particularly in the morning session where it felt like the ball was going past the edge of the bat every five seconds.

However, the hosts had some chances - and failed to capitalise on them.

  7. Post update

    Azhar Mahmood

Former Pakistan all-rounder on Test Match Special

It was a great day for Pakistan. At lunch the game was evenly poised but after that these two guys played so well. Especially Babar Azam with his cover drive on the front foot. I thought Shan Masood played well too but he was lucky with the missed chances from Buttler.

Pakistan will be happy with this score.

  8. Post update

After winning the toss and opting to bat this morning, it's all gone rather well for Pakistan.

They'll resume tomorrow with Shan Masoon on 46 and Babar Azam on 69.

Steve: Here you go Pakistan, help yourself to a few cheap extra runs and then let's go off again, shall we? Test cricket at its absolute wasteful barmiest.

Jason Cole: It's going to be gloriously sunny at 19.01 in Manchester, isn't it?

  10. Close of play

And that, I'm afraid, is your lot.

  11. Post update

Plus side? We got to see Babar Azam a little more.

Down side? Everything else that happened in that last 30 minutes or so.

It's days like this that you realise how futile it is trying to explain to someone why you like Test cricket.

  12. Post update

    Azhar Mahmood

Former Pakistan all-rounder on Test Match Special

It was a missed opportunity for Buttler but a huge opportunity for Shan Masood to now turn this into a big score.

  13. Post update

Jos Buttler has had better days, you'd say.

Arjun Singh: Cue the Foakes brigade after that missed stumping. I think it’s a very difficult take for Buttler there - the ball bounced abnormally and pretty quickly too. A half-chance at best.

Stoney: Once again Buttler fails in his duty as a keeper. England will always have this problem because they sacrifice specialists for all-rounders. Trying get a better batsman at the expense of a better keeper. I’m certain Foakes would have snaffled both chances.

  15. Post update

Well, I think we can all agree that was an excellent use of everyone's time. A nonsense.

  16. Post update

    Daniel Norcross

    BBC Test Match Special

It is now properly dark, it has to be said.

  17. Bad light stops play

Amazing. Joe Root gets ready to bowl himself and the umpires decide to take them off.

    Never change, cricket.

  18. Get Involved

    #bbccricket

Rob Hook: You can't criticise Jos Buttler there. It nearly bounced over his head.

DGB: Jos Buttler cost two wickets today at key times. He really needs to start proving his worth.

  19. Post update

    Azhar Mahmood

Former Pakistan all-rounder on Test Match Special

Good use of the feet from Babar and great elevation to the shot. He's a stroke maker and he likes to put pressure on the bowlers. He won't let Bess settle. He's picking the length so well.

  20. Pak 139-2

I, genuinely, have no idea why they're still out there.

And to prove the point, Babar Azam comes dancing down the track with those twinkle toes and lofts Dom Bess gloriously over mid-on for a one-bounce four.
