The battle for the semi-final places is really on. England may well be a little nervous. Their place is by no means secure after the last few days.

Bangladesh play Afghanistan tomorrow and can also close the gap to fourth place. We'll have full coverage of that for you from 09:45 BST.

Scroll down for highlights and reaction to today's game. You can also read our match report.

    Until tomorrow!

So Pakistan will probably have to win all three of their remaining matches to qualify for the semi-finals.

If they turn up like they did today then you wouldn't bet against it.

They have New Zealand on Wednesday, followed by Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

But will Pakistan revert to the team that was beaten in the last couple of games? With them you never know.

  3. Post update

Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed: "We made some changes today for the good of the team. Haris Sohail came in, he was hungry to play in the match and the way he batted was a turning point. You see Jos Buttler play that type of innings so the way he played was fantastic.

"We have to work hard on our fielding, we dropped so may chances today. So we have to work hard on that because all our matches are very crucial.

"It was a complete bowling effort, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Amir, Shaheen Afridi all did their bit. That what has been missing in previous matches."

  4. Post update

Pakistan looked very dangerous at the end. Confidence was high as they closed in on the win.

Wahab Riaz bowled nasty toe-crushers. He was too good for the lower-order.

  5. 'Extremely disappointing'

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis: "We are not playing great cricket. The whole tournament we have been good with the ball but today we started pretty poorly and gave them a good start. It was a real response bowling through the middle.

"300-plus was probably 25 too many on that pitch and then once again we made the same mistakes with the bat – guys getting in and getting out.

“The biggest down side is we are not doing ourselves justice as team. We are not playing the cricket we are capable of and that is extremely disappointing.

"For me the biggest disappointment is we are letting ourselves down with the skill that is in that dressing room."

  6. Post update

Du Plessis and Quinton de Kock threatened to pull off the chase but in reality they never got to grips with the run-rate.

    They hit a few boundaries...

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis dounds pretty down at the post-match interviews.

He says too many batsman got in and got out.

    BBC Test Match Special

There was only once in this World Cup when South Africa showed a little bit of intent with the bat and that was against New Zealand, but even then it was a little bit too late. That's what has been lacking, that ability to put their foot down.

But, if you leave out 2003, they have made the knockout stages in every other World Cup they have played in and going into the tournament they were second only to Australia in terms of win/loss ratio in group stage games. So they usually lose in the knockouts, but this time it was the preliminary stage.

  9. Post update

With the ball it was the good Pakistan today.

Mohammad Amir was brilliant once again. He took a wicket with his very first ball.

  10. Post update

Imran Tahir has had a busy day.

It started with that controversial 'catch' and then he was comfortably South Africa's best bowler with a fine caught and bowled catch thrown in too.

It was not enough though. His side have two games still to play but have nothing left to play for.

Pakistan made a very quick start before a bit of consolidation.

It was Haris who took them over 300 with shots like these in the second half of the innings...

Samuel Ager: I wonder if this South African World Cup performance will spark a turn in fortunes much like after England's display in 2015? 2023 World Cup should be interesting

  14. Post update

Pakistan are now seventh in the table on five points. If they win their last three games against New Zealand, Afghanistan and Bangladesh then England would have to win two of their last three games to progress.

    It's going to be nervy.

  15. Post update

It has been a miserable tournament for South Africa. Their batsman shake hands with the Pakistan players.

There is no big celebration from the men in green. There is still a lot of work to do but they have a chance.
