And at the end India reminded everyone that they have some of the best death bowlers in the world.

Jasprit Bumrah was exceptional. He finished with 3-61. Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 3-50.

Despite Alex Carey bludgeoning 55, India professionally closed it out.

When Glenn Maxwell eventually got in, having weirdly been held back until the 37th over, he threatened to do something special.

He was the first batsman to play with real intent for his 28 from 14 balls.

But India came back with three wickets in seven balls to to all-but eliminate any hope of the most unlikely of victories.

Australia's run chase was strange. Michael Vaughan described it as "out-dated".

They plodded along, only making 139 from their first 25 overs. That meant they left themselves 214 runs to score from the second half of the innings.

David Warner should have been out before he was...

India are up to third with that win, despite having played a game less than most of the other teams at the top.

They play New Zealand at Trent Bridge on Thursday.

Australia's next game is against Pakistan at Taunton on Wednesday.

More from Australia captain Aaron Finch: "We will look at everything, you assess conditions, we are off down to Taunton tomorrow, we will take a look at the surface there. You look for different combinations and balances all the time.

On his run out: "I hate getting run out, but it's one of those things, you back your partner's call, we were looking to pick the tempo a little bit at that point. There's 10 ways to get out and I got one of them.

On David Warner's innings: "I think they bowled really well to David early on. The way that he had to play, taking a little more time, is fine. He is a world class player and he will bounce back."

  8. 'The perfect game'

India captain Virat Kohli: "A top, top win for us - especially after losing the series [against Australia] in India. We had a point to prove to beat this side. They are playing really good cricket in the two games.

"We came with intent. The opening partnership was outstanding, I got runs Hardik got runs, MS. It was the perfect game for us.

"We were very professional again and that pleases you again as a captain."

  9. Post update

Australia captain Aaron Finch: "They got 120 runs off the last 10 overs which is a lot. We didn't bowl our best stuff and struggled to get wickets early on which was the key.

"I think it being a used surface didn't help with the new ball, there wasn't a huge amount on offer. But we could have been a bit straighter, that's tough because you want to get wickets early as they bat very deep.

"It was just one of those games, they just outplayed us."

  10. Post update

Was it India's late hitting that won the game? They added 116 in their final 10 overs.

Hardik Pandya, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and KL Rahul all contributed.

They took India from a good score to one that Australia never looked like chasing.

  11. Post update

India batsman and player of the match Shikhar Dhawan: "I'm very happy with the result. The best thing is that everyone is performing, that's a good sign.

"We are a great fielding side as well with some great catches and stops, we have a very balanced side. We work very hard in the nets and that's why things are going our way.

"We ticked all the boxes, we knew Australia was a great side and it would go to the end. We put a good total on the board and the bowlers backed it up.

"I'd also like to thank the fans, a lot of people have come over from India, it's amazing."

Jay Barnes: India are very good but I can't be the only one thinking they're still a way behind England when it comes to this World Cup.

  15. Post update

A word for Alex Carey who finishes 55 not out from 35 balls. If all of Australia's batsmen had shown the intent he did then they might have got closer.

  16. 'Australia are old school'

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I'd advise Australia to change their approach but that's the way they have played. They play this style back at home - a very old-school way of playing. But I think they could be a bit riskier, a bit more aggressive.

  17. Post update

Kohli pumps both arms back and forth in celebration. MS Dhoni waves to someone in the crowd.

    India look good.

  18. 'India are the best team I've seen'

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

That was an outstanding performance from India - the best team I've seen so far at the tournament. They look like the team to beat.

  19. INDIA WIN BY 36 RUNS

Zampa c sub (Jadeja) b Kumar 1 (Aus 316 all out)

It ends with a wicket! A very good win for India is complete.

Adam Zampa just chips the ball to Ravi Jadeja at extra cover and the India celebrations can begin, both on the pitch and in the stands.
