  1. Bye!

Right. Shall we try all that again tomorrow?

Stephan Shemilt's match report is over here and the TMS podcast will be available shortly.

We'll be back from 10:30 BST to see what day three has in store.

    Until then...

It has felt like this game has been played in Australia on the back of a long tour. It hasn't felt like England are 1-1 with two matches to play. They just haven't looked right.

That said, they can come back tomorrow as individuals.

  3. 'Have England got the mental strength?'

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

With the rain England might only have to bat for 60 overs tomorrow with the rain. Have they got enough mental strength to get away from this match with a draw?

If they get 400 in the first innings, you are looking at batting until tea time on Saturday, then you are asking Australia a question. It is all about how England bat in the first innings

My concern is the body language of the last two days could transfer into the batting.

  4. Post update

I'm going to be positive here - and believe me, that's rare.

It's turning but Nathan Lyon didn't bowl that well. Mitchell Starc was too wide and got hoicked out of the attack sharpish and Josh Hazlewood went too short, too quick. If England don't, y'know, go all England-y, they can bat and bat and bat.

If England come out tomorrow and show the same application as the second innings at Headingley, on this wicket they should be able to score some runs tomorrow.

But when the scoreboard says 497 to the opposition and you are up against Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins and Lyon it is not going to be easy.

Smith is a run machine. You can't say he is pretty to watch. He is exhausting to watch.

Smith is an artist - the greatest artist I have seen. I love watching him bat.

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

England have three days of real discipline and technical nous ahead. It will test their mentality. I have been disappointed with England. Many say I am always critical but this is a must win match. England had to arrive with the right mentality. It was a good toss to win but what I have seen is an England side that looks a little dejected.

Joe Denly has batted at two, three and four in his past 12 innings.

England need to find a permanent solution to the opener problem, rather than sticking a Denly-shaped plaster over it.

  15. Close of play - Eng 23-1

Short, and Craig Overton sways out of the way!

England have made it to the close with just one wicket down, trailing Australia by 474 runs. Ouch.
