  1. Post update

    We'll leave it there.

Another frustrating day. Scroll down for highlights.

We'll be back at 10:30 BST tomorrow for full coverage of day four.

    See you then.

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Archer looks like the most confident guy I've seen arriving on an England debut since Kevin Pietersen. Stuart Broad will also fancy these next two days, he has got a spell in him that can change the series. It wouldn't surprise me if he carried on after this summer, he is certainly good enough, but I wouldn't begrudge him if he called it a day.

Head over here for full details and highlights of what happened today in the little play there was.

  4. 'Every result is possible'

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

On a wicket like this I do think there will be a low score. I still think every result is possible - a team could be bowled out quite easily in 40-50 overs. If Australia had caught better they could have bowled England out for 170.

  5. Post update

In total five session have now been lost to rain in this match.

    Frustrating.

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I thought they bowled pretty well to Smith, he just played well. You can still get your tactics right but he can overcome it because he's a great player.

  7. Post update

Steve Smith will be back again tomorrow. Today he managed 13 runs from 40 balls without any alarms.

Fellow not out batsman Matthew Wade is yet to score from his 23 balls.

  8. Post update

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

The pitch will continue to do things and you can still get Smith out. Australia will be trying to bat 50-60 overs and get near England, then that third innings will be tricky, how do they play that?

  9. Post update

Just 24.1 overs were possible in the day.

Australia added 50 runs but England took three wickets.

We'll resume tomorrow with the score 80-4.

    Jonathan Agnew

    BBC cricket correspondent

It is raining, the stewards are being arranged and the umpires have disappeared. I think that's the last we'll see of them today.

    Tom Fordyce

BBC chief sports writer at Lord's

General astonishment at the sight of the covers coming off. Or there would be if there were anyone left in the stands to be astonished.

Believe it or not, the covers are coming off. Is that just to tease us?

    Well, well, well.

The groundstaff are milling around, lifting up the covers, and we're going to have an inspection in 20 minutes or so.
