  1. Post update

And we'll now leave it there on this page. What a disappointing day.

We'll be back from 00:15 GMT tonight for day four when hopefully there'll be plenty of cricket to describe to you.

England are going to have to battle hard to save this Test.

    Until then, goodbye.

  2. Post update

Aggers mentioned the weather forecast for tomorrow and here it is. Sunshine and pleasantly warm in the afternoon. Hopefully it stays that way.

  3. Play abandoned

So that is that. A very frustrating day comes to an end with just 17 balls bowled.

We started on time at 00:30 GMT but the players left the field soon after and were unable to return.

It has rained pretty consistently since then and the umpires have called the day off over two hours before the scheduled close.

New Zealand are 233-4 at the end of day three. They added just four runs in the day.

  4. Play abandoned

We have just heard that play has been abandoned for the day.

  5. Another inspection due at 06:00 GMT

    Simon Mann

    BBC Test Match Special commentator

There will be another inspection at 7pm local time (06:00 GMT) - and it's our understanding that if it's still raining then, play will be called off.

  6. It's still raining

And with that damning verdict from Simon Mann we are going to take a little break.

If there is any further prospect of play we will be right back here to give you all the details and talk you through the action if the players do get back out.

In the meantime, have a nap, make some breakfast or do whatever else you like to do at this time on a Saturday morning.

  7. Post update

    Simon Mann

    BBC Test Match Special commentator

I'd say it's inconceivable that we'll get any more play today. There are still some people, though, in the stands hoping there will be.

We might not get a full day tomorrow and Monday, but the forecast is considerably better for both days.

  8. Latest from Auckland

Just a quick recap for anyone getting up very early on a Saturday morning.

We have had just 17 balls today due to rain. Play started at around 00:30 GMT but around 10 minutes later the players were off the field and we haven't seen them since.

New Zealand added four runs and no wickets fell in the short period that was possible.

It is still raining and the prospects of any more play are slim.

  11. Post update

Get ready people. There may be no play for the foreseeable but we have just received quite possibly the best tweet I've ever seen...

  12. Post update

Congratulations! I don't mean to burst your honeymoon bubble but I'm not very optimistic of any play today. I'm no weather man though!

  14. Kohli at a county near you?

There is some really interesting news coming out of India at the moment.

There are reports that Indian superstar Virat Kohli has agreed to play county cricket in June this summer in preparation for India's tour of England.

The Times of India says Kohli will join Surrey.

This is proper rain now. This is not good.

TMS listeners now have another chance to listen to "Our TMS", a programme from last summer celebrating Test Match Special's 60 years on air.

  16. How's stat?!

    Vic Marks

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

Not since 1902 has a Test match team who scored 58 or less managed to get a draw.

England have a bit of work to do but they are just starting to get into territory where there is a way out.

England would have to bat in excess of four sessions to win the match assuming it is good weather from tomorrow.

That sunset is something special. Quite a scene for a game of cricket.
