  3. What to do with England's batting order?

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I would put Haseeb back into number two when he comes back, Jennings goes to three and Joe Root to four. Jennings looked like he could go through the gears - he's got the game.

Edmund Collins: Ashwin bags five almost once in every four times he bowls. Can we really give the lads too hard a time? Terrifying talent really.

  5. 'India were amateurish'

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

The field settings today were amateurish. India spread the field - it was too easy for them to get off strike. In terms of tactics, India were poor. Without Ravi Ashwin, they would be right on the back of a terrible day.

  6. 'Cookie really calmed me down'

More from Keaton Jennings, who became the eighth England opener to make a century on Test debut: "You never really know how you'll react under pressure. Thankfully I've come in and done well straightaway. We'll over find out how successful you can be over a long period of time.

"The biggest adjustment was to the crowd and the noise. Cookie was brilliant with me - he really calmed me down."

On bringing up his century with a reverse sweep: "In the moment, I thought,'do I want to get out defending, or attacking?."

  8. 'It's been surreal'

England's Keaton Jennings, who made 112 on debut, on Sky Sports: "It's been an incredible six to eight months, and an even more incredible 72 hours, flying over from Dubai. It's been surreal.

"There was a little bit of panic at five o'clock this morning when I woke up and thought I'd missed the bus.

"It was awesome. It was really special - and really special to do it in a place like India. The passion they have for the game and the culture is incredible."

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

It's England's batting that is the problem. We may still win the Test match but they keep making it hard for themselves because they keep doing daft, stupid things. We have one of the best attacks in the world.

That daft, stupid shot from Moeen let India in. Then you're on the rack and Stokes did really well to stick it out. Very commendable. He had to show composure and discipline and I take my hat off.

There will be some pleasure from England but a tinge of disappointment that they didn't make a better fist in the final session. The big plus is Jennings. He looked very much at ease. He didn't do anything silly, he just waited for the bad ball and played immaculately.

A tremendous day's play. It's a really good pitch - it's got a little bit of everything but as a batsman you know if you do the hard yards and get in, there are runs out there. I would say England have just edged that day. Tomorrow morning's session is going to be crucial.

  14. Eng 288-5

Last over. Jadeja delivers it, Stokes resists it.

A rollercoaster day comes to a close with England ahead. Just.

Paul Maguire: Buttler's technique under serious scrutiny.

  16. Eng 288-5

    Ashwin 30-3-75-4

Buttler isn't prepared to let Ashwin dictate terms. He rocks back and cuts his first ball for four before picking up a single with a steer to leg following some good footwork. Stokes adds a further single with little prod to leg. No late breakthrough for Ravi.

  17. Eng 282-5

Three more runs added to the total off the bowling of Jayant. Without Ashwin, the India attack lacks true potency. No surprise to see him eagerly whipping off his sweater for one last go at this pair.

    Michael Vaughan

England could get themselves in a decent position here. I think you can get something out of this surface as a seamer, but the main threat is from spin. It depends how well England's spinners bowl - that will be the pressure for them.

  19. Eng 279-5

Stokes spots a rare opportunity for runs and latches on to a loose Jadeja ball to find the rope down to fine leg.
