  1. Farewell

An excellent first day then. To see if Moeen can get that one run to reach three figures, and how many England's middle and lower order can put on the board, please join us again from 03:45 GMT on Thursday. Cheerio now.

  2. Post update

A magnificent 179-run partnership between Joe Root and Moeen Ali was the cornerstone, but remarkably it is only the fifth highest for England's fourth-wicket in India. Paul Collingwood and Andrew Strauss hold the record with 214 in 2008.

  3. Post update

There have been 20 consecutive innings from visiting Test teams in India without a score of 300 until England managed it today. Super effort from the tourists.

I was so impressed with Haseeb. He has good footwork. He was so composed and looks like a real opener. I can see why the selectors have taken a chance on him. But you've got to remember he's only young, he's only 19. Where were you playing at 19? Well I was playing for Yorkshire's second team.

It was odd that Cook didn't review his lbw but maybe he just didn't want to put his young debutant under the pressure to make a decision.

I thought Root was out. He was caught, it's as simple as that and he was right not to question the decision.

  6. Summary of the day

    Eng 311-4

A good start for England then. Debutant Haseeb Hameed with an encouraging 31. Skipper Alastair Cook out lbw for 21 and it was 102-3 at lunch. Then there was the Root-Ali partnership, unbroken throughout the afternoon session, taking England to 209-3 at tea.

Root reached his 11th Test century and the partnership extended to 179, Moeen remaining not out, one short of his century.

Well I thought when they said that the pitch was going to be a big turner at the beginning of the day was a load of rubbish. I knew it wasn't going to be a sand pit at the beginning, so England winning the toss and batting first was great news.

Elliott Bewley: All we need is for Moeen to carry this confidence with the bat into confidence with the ball and we'll be laughing!

Neil Spofforth: Superb first day from England 311-4 take a bow @root66@MoeenAli@HaseebHameed97

Ralph Brooker: Love Mo. Love Joe

  9. Player reaction

England's Joe Root, speaking to Sky Sports: "The way we played throughout the day was fantastic. We always through that seam would be useful early on. The guys handled it well and that allowed the boys in the middle order to build partnerships. I look forward to watching Mo bat all day tomorrow too. It's pleasing, something to build on and a good position to be in."

On his own dismissal to a juggling Umesh Yadav: "I set off walking, it was out, and there's no point arguing about it."

It wasn't a great start but it was a great finish and that's what matters. They can sleep well tonight. Now they see that these India players aren't super men, they'll get lots of confidence from this.

That was a brilliant day for England and they've made the most of a good pitch. Brilliant start.

  12. Close of play - Eng 311-4

    Moeen 99, Stokes 19

Stokes plays the remainder of the over and that will be that for the day. There have been 14 players not out on 99 overnight, but encouragingly for Moeen, all 14 have gone on to make hundreds.

  13. Eng 311-4

    Moeen 99*

A full toss from Mishra surprises Moeen and he can only get it off the bottom of the bat over the bowler's head for a single.

There's a man after my own heart. Giving Moeen six more balls. Good man.

  15. Eng 310-4

But it's an accurate over from Ashwin and Moeen can only take a single from the final delivery. But, we just have time for one more over and Moeen will be on strike.

  16. Eng 309-4

Mishra returns for some tempting leg spin. He tosses one up to Moeen, inviting the drive, but the left-hander plays it in circumspect fashion for just a single. Stokes is not so respectful to a long hop and pulls it dismissively for four. Moeen will be on strike for what could be the final over of the day.

    Moeen Ali watches the ball

I like this pitch, it's been excellent on the first day - it's not been like the type of pitch we worried about.

  18. Eng 304-4

We may be nearing the close but Stokes is not in the mood to batten down the hatches, a saunter down the wicket to Ashwin and it sails over long-on for six of the best. Moeen on strike now, four short of his hundred.
