  1. Goodbye

Right, that's it from us. England's ambitions of getting off to a winning start in the World T20 have been reduced to rubble by the Gayle Force. For Eoin Morgan's men, a match against South Africa on Friday now looms large.

But before that, tomorrow sees England Women face Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka take on Afghanistan in the men's tournament. Join us from 09:00 for live text, TMS and in-play highlights.

    Until then, adios.

  2. Captain's view

West Indies captain Darren Sammy: "It's always a joy to watch Chris Gayle - the universe boss, as he renamed himself from world boss. He's an incredible player, it was great to watch in the dugout.

"I thought England batted well but we were happy to chase down 182. We thought at one time we would be chasing 220, but they never really accelerated."

  3. Captain's view

England captain Eoin Morgan: "I thought it was a competitive total. We would have liked 200, 220 probably would have been a wining total but we never really took the game away from them.

"They bowled well, and probably in the chase there was not a lot on offer for us apart from the first few overs when it swung. And once Gayle gets himself in he’s hard to stop. Things were difficult."

  4. Post update

England will feel that they lost that match with the ball, but they didn't quite get going with the bat either. Joe Root, Jos Buttler, Eoin Morgan and Alex Hales all got in but none of them hit anything near top gear. Worth remembering that last time Gayle scored a hundred at the World T20, West Indies were beaten... by South Africa, who England face next.

  5. Post update

So, after one match in Group 1, West Indies are top and England are bottom. Early days, but that's a big blow for Eoin Morgan's men, and they may have to beat both South Africa and Sri Lanka to progress.

  6. Player reaction

More from Chris Gayle on celebrating his century: "The celebration is all about DJ Bravo's song 'Champion'. That is going to be our anthem at the World Cup, we have to keep pressing that. We built the song together, we got to dance together as well."

  7. Player reaction

More from Chris Gayle: "Sulieman Benn said to me I had to go out and entertain him, that gave me that spark as well - I need to entertain my team-mate and he's my drinking partner as well.

"It was always good to bat second. A target of 183 we always had a chance of chasing that down. We didn't panic. Now we're on to the next one, Sri Lanka in Bangalore, my home town, I'm looking forward to that."

  8. Player reaction

West Indies' Chris Gayle is asked: Just how do you hit the ball so hard? "Honestly it's good skills - that is what we practise. The preparation has been really good, and this was a good wicket to bat on, chasing a decent total.

"It was a fantastic innings and I'm really happy to have finished the game, I didn't leave it for anyone."

    Vic Marks

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"I think England's total was competent, but the innings never caught fire. No-one really stayed long enough to cause real mayhem."

  10. End of match scorecard

    England 182-6 (20 overs): Root 48 (36), Buttler 30 (20), Hales 28 (26), Russell 2-36

    West Indies 183-4 (18.1 overs): Gayle 100* (48), Samuels 37 (27), Rashid 1-20.

West Indies won by six wickets.

    Vic Marks

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"Chris Gayle is special. There's a huge smile on his face. He loves this tournament, loves this format, loves his country. In a curious way it was a very methodical innings - I knot it's not he most obvious adjective but he does play the ball on its merits. It just so happens that those balls most batsmen defend, he can hit for six."

  12. WEST INDIES WIN BY SIX WICKETS

    WI 183-4

All over. Russell pulls a short ball behind square and West Indies are victorious. England, quite simply, have been blown away.

Jonty: Some great batting by Gayle but the standard of bowling is atrocious! There has been more dross than decent balls. No brains these bowlers.

  14. SCORES LEVEL

    WI 182-4

Russell smashes a Stokes full toss over point for four, and the scores are now level...

"England should have gone harder at Chris Gayle. It's easy to say, but make him feel old. He doesn't look very old at the moment."

  17. Post update

    Jonathan Agnew

    BBC Test Match Special

"What a showman. Swishing his bat as if he's swatting a wasp away. A match-winning innings and a brilliant performance from Chris Gayle. England have had no answer to him today."

  18. 100 for Gayle

    WI 173-4

There it is, a quite brilliant knock from Gayle. He squeezes a single down to backward to bring up his milestone off 47 deliveries. The first man ever to score two World T20 hundreds, and he celebrates with little arm-pumping dance move. What an innings.
