That was pretty incredible stuff. What a night for Josh Warrington.

The Leeds United fan, who has always dreamed of winning a world title at Elland Road sees those aspirations and hopes come true.

It was a brutal, bloody and thrilling clash with Warrington getting the verdict via a split decision to rip the IBF World Featherweight Championship from Lee Selby.

We are ending the live text there but thanks, as always, for joining us and until next time, bye for now.

  2. Post update

We are hearing that Lee Selby will not be doing any media interviews tonight, presumably as he heads off to hospital to get those two cuts checked out and stitched up.

But where next professionally for Selby? That was only a second professional defeat in 28 contests and his first loss in nine years

There will certainly be calls for a rematch, but maybe a move up a weight to super-featherweight is next for the 31-year-old.

  3. Warrington stuns Selby to win world title - read the report

    Michael Pearlman

    BBC Sport at Elland Road

Josh Warrington made history by becoming the first boxer from Leeds to win a world title with a stunning split-decision upset victory over Wales' Lee Selby.

Selby, who was cut above both eyes by accidental head clashes inside the first six rounds, could not recover from a superb start from the Yorkshireman.

The judges scored the contest 116-112 115-113 113-115, giving Warrington the IBF world featherweight title at Elland Road, home of his beloved Leeds United.

Warrington came into the fight as a 4-1 outsider with the bookmakers but produced the performance of a lifetime, showing relentless energy and courage as he continued to power forward for 36 pulsating minutes.

Dave Baker: How can there be such disparity in the scorecards? How on earth did one of the judges have Lee Selby winning that? Something needs to be done to improve the boxing scorecards.

Daniel Barker: Should never been a split decision Warrington won by at least five rounds.

Mark‏: This happens far too often in boxing, Warrington won that by a country mile

“I am not the most talented, I am probably not the fittest, but I have heart.

“Five years ago I was getting a bus to work as a dental technician and now I am a world champion.

Northern Ireland's Carl Frampton is scheduled to be fighting at Windsor Park in Belfast on 18 August with his interim WBO World Featherweight Championship on the line.

"There were times in that fight when the roar of the crowd kept pushing me forward and gave me that second gear when I needed it.

"Lee is a very good fighter and anyone who has rushed in against him has lost. I out boxed the boxer tonight."

On a potential fight with Carl Frampton in Belfast, Warrington says: "I don't mind going anywhere, I've been a fan of Carl's and two weeks ago I said I would beat Lee Selby and come to Windsor Park. We will sit down with Frank Warren and get the fight sorted."

    Warrington wins by split decision

    Jamie Moore

Former British and European light-middleweight champion on BBC Radio 5 live

It's a fantastic performance and he has sent a statement out to the featherweight division.

I don't think he will be ready to face Carl Frampton on August 18. It would be unfair for Josh Warrington to do that. Three months turnaround is far too much.

A lot of us have overlooked Josh Warrington. He has shocked a lot of people tonight.

    Warrington wins by split decision

I can not see in any way how a judge gives that to Selby. What has gone on there, what have they seen?

Incredibly it is a split decision verdict. The first judge has it as 115-113 to Selby, a decision that is widely booed by the home fans, and the second judge has it 116-112 to Warrington.

The third, and deciding, judge has it as 115-113 to Warrington.

The Leeds man has done it. The first ever world champion from the city.
