Gavin McDonnell fails in attempt to win WBC super-bantamweight title

    Gavin McDonnell

Here is the report from tonight's action as Gavin McDonnell fails in his bid to join his twin brother Jamie as a world champion with a majority-decision loss to Rey Vargas.

  3. Haye v Bellew next week

It is a huge couple of months for boxing fans. And there is a huge fight next week to look forward to as David Haye takes on Tony Bellew on Saturday, 4 March.

There will be live commentary on BBC Radio 5 live and full live text commentary as well on the BBC Sport website.

Both fighters do not like each other and there have been heated scenes when the two have gone head-to-head so it is going to be lively. Lively before, lively during and probably lively after. Don't miss it.

  5. 'Gavin should be very proud, but he was not good enough'

Gavin McDonnell fails in attempt to win WBC super-bantamweight title

    BBC Radio 5 live

Some quotes from promoter Eddie Hearn, talking to BBC Radio 5 live.

"I just think Gavin started too slowly and he was always chasing it," said Hearn. "Vargas was very good, he had excellent feet and confidence.

"To put in a performance like that, Gavin should be very proud but ultimately he was not good enough. I think Rey Vargas will go on to do a lot in the sport.

"Gavin has improved so much but he was not letting his hands go and that was the frustrating thing. It was a little bit of inexperience. If he did what he did in the ninth from the fifth round onwards then he would've had a chance."

  6. I lost by three rounds - McDonnell

Gavin McDonnell fails in attempt to win WBC super-bantamweight title

    BBC Radio 5 live

Some more quotes from Gavin McDonnell, talking to BBC Radio 5 live: "I will learn, I know where I went wrong, I am disappointed, but I will work so hard to get another chance.

"I had him winning by a couple of rounds, probably three rounds in my opinion. Everyone is in with a puncher's chance, if I can improve my speed and power I will land and I can beat that kid.

"If we do have a rematch, I know how to beat him in the future."

Rod Taylor : Absolute gutsy performance from McDonnell.

Tim : Huge respect to McDonnell brave performance.

Koba Fern: The Oxford Dictionary should show a picture of McDonnell to define heart.

  9. 'I feel like I let everyone down'

Gavin McDonnell fails in attempt to win WBC super-bantamweight title

Gavin McDonnell, on Sky Sports, says: "I gave it everything and I hope everyone enjoyed it. I feel like I let everyone down.

"I just fell short at the end. I felt alright in there, I was a bit too eager and I couldn't get close enough. I will come again, I have only had 18 fights and I want to show I belong at this level.

"I have no doubt I will be a world champion."

  10. Class beats guts on the night

    Luke Reddy

BBC Sport boxing reporter in Hull

    Vargas

Some booing but little complaint from those in the ring. A display of class from Rey Vargas. His corner knew as soon as the 12th ended and as the decision is read, Gavin McDonnell's shoulders slump a little.

Guts galore from the Briton, class aplenty from his rival.

  11. '10 out of 10 for effort'

Gavin McDonnell fails in attempt to win WBC super-bantamweight title

    Richie Woodhall

Former world champion on BBC Radio 5 live

You have to give him 10 out of 10 for effort to McDonnell. What a performance from him. He had sheer bottle in every round but he didn't match up to Vargas' quality tonight.

  12. BreakingVargas wins the WBC Super-Bantamweight Championship

Not all the judges are in agreement. Judge Ian John-Lewis scores it as a 114-114 draw, but the other two judges give the verdict to Vargas by 117-111 and 116-112 margins.

Rey Vargas is the winner by majority decision and the new world champion.

  13. Post update

    Fight over

And there is the final bell. Surely Vargas is going to get his arm raised in a few moments' time.

McDonnell gave it absolutely everything, every ounce of energy and every attempt of going for the knockout. But Vargas' strong, dominant start will probably be enough.

  14. Post update

    Round 12

Eddie Hearn is screaming his man on. Can McDonnell get the win? He needs to find a knockout.

  15. Post update

    Round 12

Vargas is a clever customer, keeping McDonnell at range as the Englishman keeps trying to attack. One minute to go.

  16. 'He needs a knockout'

    Richie Woodhall

Former world champion on BBC Radio 5 live

He needs a knockout. I have McDonnell seven rounds down and that's being generous.

But I'm sure he'll throw the kitchen sink at Vargas in this round.

  17. Post update

    Round 12

McDonnell is still attacking. Looking to hit the jackpot. But is it too little, too late?

  18. Post update

    Round 12

It is now or never for Gavin McDonnell.

  19. Post update

    Round 11

We have three minutes left and McDonnell needs to knock his opponent out. Vargas has been in a fight, make no mistake, but unless he makes an error, or McDonnell finds something amazing, then the belt is heading to Mexico.
