The 24th Karate World Championships are Karate's biggest
event. Held every two years, the Karate Senior World Championships gather
athletes from over a hundred countries.
The tournament will take place at the WiZink Center sports
hall in Madrid, Spain.
The competition acquires even greater importance since the
Spanish capital will host the last World Championships to be held before
Karate's debut at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
The 24th World Championships will be the competition
providing the highest number of points for athletes to qualify for the Olympic
Games.
From a wheelchair to the Worlds
Scotland's Amy Connell finished seventh at the 2014 World Championships, despite feeling pain in her shins during the tournament.
When she was examined by doctors, they discovered fractures and put her in a wheelchair. It seemed like the end of her karate career.
But Amy, 24, a karate fighter since the age of 3, is now back in the World Championships in Madrid after finishing second in a tournament in Paris earlier this year.
And her goal is an Olympic spot when her sport makes its debut in Tokyo in two years' time.
