  3. Lukaku rejects Everton deal

    Football

    Phil McNulty

    BBC Sport chief football writer

Romelu Lukaku has shocked Everton by turning down the most lucrative contract offer in the club's history.

Everton were confident up until the last 48 hours that the 23-year-old Belgian striker would sign a new five-year deal believed to be worth around £140,000-a-week.

Lukaku's agent, Mino Raiola, even went public on negotiations claiming his client was "99.9%" certain to extend his stay at Goodison Park.

It has now emerged, however, that Lukaku has informed Everton he currently has no desire to extend a contract which still has two years to run.

Lukaku has made no secret of his desire to play in the Champions League and has been linked with a return to former club Chelsea, from whom he joined Everton for £28m in 2014.

Everton may still hope to persuade Lukaku to stay, but if not will demand a few in excess of £60m for the striker who has scored 19 goals this season.

  4. Novices' Handicap Chase

    Horse Racing

We are now under way in the final race of the day from Cheltenham - we'll bring you more on Edwulf as it comes in.

  5. Edwulf badly injured

    Horse Racing

    Derek Thompson

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra reporter at Cheltenham

Edwulf is off the track and they are throwing buckets of water over him. Half an hour ago I was worried, but now I am hopeful.

  6. Novices' Handicap Chase delayed

    Horse Racing

Edwulf is now off the track but it is not quite clear what his condition is.

It is obviously a serious injury, but BBC Radio 5 live sports extra colleagues in Cheltenham are still waiting to be updated.

In the meantime, the delayed Novices' Handicap Chase (17:30) looks like it should be getting under way soon.

  7. Novices' Handicap Chase delayed

    Horse Racing

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

Bit of a delay to the start of the 17:30 GMT Novices' Handicap Chase - the final race of the day.

That's because of an injury suffered by Edwulf in the previous race, the National Hunt Chase.

John Inverdale is reporting on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra that the JP McManus horse may have to be put down.

Meet Guy Disney, the jump jockey who last month became the first amputee to win a professional race in Britain - the Royal Artillery Cup at Sandown.

Guy lost the lower half of his right leg when his patrol was attacked by a grenade in Afghanistan in 2009 and then had to battle - and design his own equipment - in order to be awarded his racing licence in 2014.

  9. 'Buveur D’Air takes crown in fine style'

    Horse Racing

    Cornelius Lysaght

BBC horse racing correspondent at Cheltenham

Though the last two champions - Annie Power and Faugheen - weren’t present because of injury, and their fans are sure to have a view on how they’d have fared against Buveur D’Air, you have to say the new champ took the crown in fine style.

Taking over the lead as he headed towards the last hurdle, the only six-year-old really asserted, with a three-time runner-up four-and-a-half lengths away in second.

Trainer Nicky Henderson is superb with these top hurdlers, and he enjoyed a memorable day with Altior taking the Arkle Trophy, though how big a battle he’d have had if Charbel – who fell in the lead at the second last – stood up we’ll never know.
