  2. More on Ashley and Rangers SFA investigation

    Rangers and Mike Ashley have been accused of breaching several Scottish Football Association rules relating to his dual interest in Rangers and Newcastle.

    Ashley owns 8.29% of the Ibrox club and he has an agreement in place with the SFA that he will not increase that shareholding to above 10%.

    Both Rangers and Ashley have been issued with a notice of complaint. The case will be heard on 27 January.

  3. Gray feels local pride after first hat-trick


    Demarai Gray

    Birmingham City's teenage forward Demarai Gray is keen to build on the feeling of local pride he got from registering his first professional hat-trick.

    The 18-year-old claimed a treble in the space of 34 first-half minutes in Saturday's 6-1 thrashing of Reading.

    "It was a nice feeling for myself," he told BBC WM.

    "I'm a Birmingham boy and I've been at the club since I was 10. I know fans like to see local players and playing for the Blues' first team means everything to me."

  4. Beasley calls time on USA career


    United States defender DaMarcus Beasley has announced his retirement from international football.

    Beasley, 32, has been capped 121 times and is the only player to represent the USA at four World Cups.

    The former PSV Eindhoven, Rangers and Manchester City player made the announcement on his Instagram page.

  5. Dagenham extend Obileye loan


    League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge have extended Ayo Obileye's loan spell.

    The 20-year-old Charlton Athletic defender, who joined the Daggers in November on a month's loan, will stay with them until 3 January.

  6. Pietersen released by Daredevils

    Kevin Pietersen has been released by his Indian Premier League side Delhi Daredevils.

    Pietersen, 34, captained the side in last year's competition, but was unable to prevent them from finishing bottom of the table.

    The Daredevils have decided to release 13 players from their 2014 squad, including New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor and South Africa all-rounder Wayne Parnell.

    British Skeleton has withdrawn Lizzy Yarnold from the season's second World Cup in Calgary under medical advice.

    Olympic champion Yarnold experienced some symptoms of dizziness during her victory at the season opener in Lake Placid on Friday.

    She said: "I'm naturally disappointed not to be able to race on Friday. I enjoyed getting back into the mindset last week and winning.

    "I felt dizzy at the end of the first run in Lake Placid, but felt okay before the second run and knew that I could go for it but in our sport where we are travelling at such high speeds these things happen and we have to look after ourselves."

    Simon Mignolet, Liverpool

    Liverpool are planning to sign Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy for around £8m in January as speculation grows over Simon Mignolet's long-term future at Anfield, the Daily Star reports.

    Mignolet was left out of the 3-0 defeat against Manchester United on Sunday with Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers saying the Belgium international was dropped "indefinitely".

    Ruddy, 28, is also rumoured to be interesting Crystal Palace.

    They claim Supporters in the Scoreboard End unfurled a banner, reading: "Au revoir Gerrard, Come back when you've won one," accompanied by a silhouette of the Reds captain's fateful slip against Chelsea last season. But that it was removed by stewards.

    Midfielder Cesc Fabregas is available following suspension as Chelsea travel to Derby for their League Cup quarter-final clash on Tuesday night.

    Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is unlikely to be risked after missing the Premier League leaders' win over Hull with a minor muscular injury, so Petr Cech is poised to continue in goal.

    Manager Jose Mourinho plans to rest Gary Cahill, with Kurt Zouma coming in, and may make a number of other changes, rotating his players ahead of the heavy festive fixture list.

  19. FA Cup tie to be replayed

    The FA Cup second round tie between MK Dons and Chesterfield is to be replayed, following an order by the FA.

    Chesterfield admitted breaching competition rules after fielding an ineligible player, Georg Margreitter, in their 1-0 win at MK Dons on 6 December.

    Margreitter - on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers - played in the fixture without the FA receiving written permission in advance.

    The FA has ordered the tie be replayed to a finish, without a replay, at the earliest possible opportunity.

    Chesterfield had been drawn against away to either Scunthorpe or Worcester City in the third round.

  23. Rio 2016 to feature morning finals

    The IAAF has published its full Athletics timetable for the Rio Olympic games and confirmed that some finals will take place during morning sessions, rather than just the evenings.

    There is at least one final in all of the morning sessions.

    "Having finals in the morning will also ensure that we receive maximum visibility for athletics at the Olympic Games across all time zones," said competitions director Paul Hardy.


    Barcelona boss Luiz Enrique is reported in Spain newspaper Marca to have said he doesn't read newspapers - for health reasons.

    He is quoted as saying about Real Madrid's advantage at the top of the Liga: "The four-point lead? It's nothing definitive. We were four points ahead earlier in the season and the gap evaporated quickly", he remarked.

    "I haven't read the criticism for some time now. My doctor told me not to".

    Head coach Aitor Karanka says Middlesbrough's fellow Championship promotion rivals are using his in-form side as a "reference".

    Boro are second behind Bournemouth on goals scored alone, and on an eight-game unbeaten run which was extended by Saturday's 2-0 win against Derby.

    "The rest of the teams respect us more each day," Karanka told BBC Tees. "We can feel it is not a coincidence when Middlesbrough is winning most of their games."

  29. Hooper wants promotion with Norwich


    Norwich City striker Gary Hooper says he wants to win promotion after the club's 5-0 win over Huddersfield Town.

    The former Celtic striker, 26, provided two assists for the Canaries as they moved up to seventh in the Championship table.

    When asked if he wanted to stay for the rest of the season, Hooper told BBC Radio Norfolk: "I want to get promoted. There's no point playing if you don't."

  30. Rovers under transfer embargo


    Blackburn Rovers's managing director Derek Shaw has been talking to the Lancashire telegraph about the Championship club facing a New Year transfer embargo after failing Financial Fair Play (FFP) requirements.

    He said: "A lot of effort and hard work has been done to reduce player costs over the last two years, but we have wanted to rebuild and challenge in this division at the same time, and we will continue to do that.

    "Whilst the ruling will clearly present some difficulties, we will of course respect the rules of the Football League."


    The Daily Mail report QPR want Blackburn strike duo Jordan Rhodes and Rudy Gestede. They also claim Ross McCormack can leave Fulham and West Ham are eying Sporting Lisbon striker Islam Slimani.

    - QPR have won on three of their six Premier League visits to Goodison Park, including a 5-3 victory in April 1993 when Les Ferdinand scored a 13-minute hat-trick.

    Gary Waddock says he has arrived at Portsmouth to assist manager Andy Awford - not replace him.

    Waddock was appointed assistant manager on Friday following the departure of Alan McLoughlin earlier in the month.

    "I have come in to support Andy Awford, his staff and players," the 52-year-old told BBC Radio Solent's Sportshour show. "I have done this role before at MK Dons with Karl Robinson so I'm comfortable with the position. I've been a number one, but I've been a number two also."

  36. Hereford United adjourned in court again


    Hereford United's winding-up order at the High Court has been adjourned again - until this Friday (16:30 BST), reports BBC Midlands Today's Dan Pallett.

    The judge will expect the £1m investment promised by Bulls chairman Andy Lonsdale to have been paid into the club by then.

    This is the ninth time that the Bulls - who now play in the Southern League - have had the case adjourned.

    The Olympic mascot will be called Vinicius and the Paralympic mascot Tom.

    They were part of the group that created the distinctive Bossa Nova sound and wrote "The Girl from Ipanema", one of the most-played songs of all time.

    Rome has officially declared its intention to bid to host the 2024 summer Olympic games.

    Prime Minister Matteo Renzi confirmed its interest as a candidate city earlier.

    Kenya has also emerged as a potential bidder. The 2024 host will be announced in 2017.

    The FA confirm to BBC Sport that Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has accepted his FA charge and has asked for a "non-personal" hearing - ie. He doesn't attend in person and submits his evidence in writing.

    Away from the European draws, ex-Liverpool and Bournemouth midfielder Jimmy Case has said the Premier League side are "there for the taking" ahead of Wednesday's League Cup quarter-final between the two at Dean Court.

    Liverpool were beaten 3-0 by Manchester United on Sunday in the same week they exited the Champions League.

    The Cherries, meanwhile, are currently top of the Championship.

    "If I was a Bournemouth fan I would be rubbing my hands," Case told BBC Radio Solent's Sportshour show on Friday. "Liverpool are there for the taking. I watch Liverpool every game. The lack of confidence within the side, the work ethic, there is a lot of work to do to get them back on track."
