The Belfast Giants started their Elite League campaign in winning fashion with a 3-2 overtime victory away to Coventry Blaze on Sunday night.

David Rutherford scored the winner 50 seconds into overtime, his second of the game.

Rutherford had put the visitors ahead in the second period, before Josh Godfrey replied for Blaze.

Mike Forney restored the Giants' lead but Jordan Pietrus netted the equaliser to take the match into overtime.

The win completed a successful weekend for the Belfast side as they had already seen off Fife Flyers 4-2 in Saturday night's Challenge Cup game at the SSE Arena.

Matt Towe put the Giants ahead early in the second period before Justin Fox quickly levelled for the visitors.

Forney restored Belfast's lead before the end of the second period with Brandon Benedict extending their advantage early in the last period.

David Turon replied for Fife before Forney's late empty-net goal.

The Giants return to Challenge Cup action next weekend, with a home fixture against Edinburgh Capitals on Saturday, followed by an away trip to Dundee Stars on Sunday.
