Padraig Harrington was unable to maintain his day one heroics at the Irish Open as a second-round 73 dropped him five off the pace at Lahinch.
Harrington's round was 10 shots more than his opening seven-under-par 63 as South Africa's Zander Lombard moved into the lead on nine under after a 67.
England's Eddie Pepperell is a stroke behind Lombard with Lee Westwood among those a further shot off the pace.
Northern Ireland's Cormac Sharvin hit a 69 to share 12th spot on five under.
Rain hits Harrington challenge
As rain fell on Friday morning at Lahinch, 47-year-old Harrington dropped four shots in his first seven holes to tumble down the leaderboard.
"It really was tough conditions," the three-time major winner told Sky Sports after his round.
"I was a bit tentative and I could have been better with my short game."
The 2020 European Ryder Cup captain's first birdie of the day on 13 was immediately cancelled out at the 14th but he picked up a shot at the last after narrowly missing a 25-foot eagle putt.
World number 316 Lombard, 24, boosted his chances of earning a first European Tour win as he moved into the clubhouse lead by adding a 67 to his opening 64 after playing his final 11 holes in five under par.
Lombard has missed his last six cuts on the European Tour but shared sixth place in last year's Irish Open at Ballyliffin.
Pepperell back in action after resting back injury
World number 36 Pepperell, playing his first event in seven weeks after resting a recurring back injury, moved to nine under after an eagle at the 12th but bogeyed 14 and was unable to pick up a shot at the par-five last.
Spaniard Jorge Campillo, who won his first European Tour event in Morocco earlier this year, came home in 30 to card a 64 and was joined on seven under by Mexico's Abraham Ancer and Westwood, who battled back from two early bogeys to sign for a 67.
England's Andy Sullivan is in a group on six under after firing a 66 while those a further stroke back include holder Russell Knox, Sharvin plus English pair Oliver Wilson and Paul Waring.
Of the other notables, Tommy Fleetwood shares 20th spot on four under alongside Harrington and another Irishman Seamus Power with Shane Lowry and 2017 winner Jon Rahm both on two under and Ian Poulter a further shot back after his 73.
Northern Ireland major winners Graeme McDowell (+4) and Darren Clarke (+7) both missed the cut.
