@104 Alan,Clarke winning the Open in 2011 was a complete fluke - just look at the last 6 winners since Woods won it - Clarke was duffing balls and bouncing over bunkers on the final day - you wouldn't get away with that on the final day of Masters / US Open or USPGA.
Europe plays from the heart in the Ryder Cup, you can hardly blame the committee for appointing the captain that many top players said they hope to have captain them. It wasn't just McIlroy that openly supported Paul McGinley, Luke Donald and others did too. Besides, McGinley's record more than speaks for itself and he's a deserving captain!
Now that McIlroy has chosen the next Ryder Cup Captain, can we assume that the next England football manager will be chosen by Wayne Rooney?
@83I agree totally agree with @125Totally irrelevant drivel.Go and join a tennis forum or something similar and let the grown ups talk.
83 Pure drivel.................
Darren Clarke suggested maybe a "bigger hitter" so we can only guess he meant rather than Paul. Monty did not that raise it and it looked like both he & Paul left it to the Committee to sort out which they have done now. I don't agree that anyone can be Captain. They might not win it but can certainly get choices wrong and lose it. Its a pity though Sandy Lyle never got his chance - too late now.
It doesn't matter who our captain is.We'll still turn over those yankies anyway.
I can only shake my head at all the so called golf fan trolls!!! I am really suprised you are not on here stating that the USA Team are a bunch of losers/certainties for the next Ryder Cup. Just ENJOY this competition for what it is, whoever the Team Captains are!!Tense, thrilling, competitive, enthralling and Brilliant!!!
For all the haters out there let me make it clear by quotations from the players...."Montgomerie, who led Europe to a 14.5-13.5 victory in Wales three years ago, was a late contender for the job.He said: "We will all get behind Paul now and wish him well. I'm not at all disappointed."
Montys says today that he " wasn't at all dissapointed " not getting the captaincy. What on earth was he doing in the frame anyway ?
As my earlier post didn't work, lets take2. Can't believe this boll@£s re Monty & Lyle. Monty only came into it when DC withdrew and somebody decided a story was needed. Shy fellow that he is he then used the opportunity to hog some limelight. As for Lyle any slim chance he ever had was blown when he quit after 9 holes at the Open a couple of years back & pi$$€d off almost all of his fellow pros
This was TOTALY the right choice; this man has honour and integrity...
@116 'scycophantic Septic ' - prey tell, who the heck are you talking about?
In the ubiquitous Peter Alliss and the late greats Henry Longhurst, Alex Hay, and Dave Marr the BBC have set a standard of commentary that SKY can only dream of emulating. In David Livingstone, Robert Lee and Sarah Stirk, three excellent presenters, Bruce Critchley sympathetically upholds the highest standards of commentary but Ewan Murray and the scycophantic Septic are arrogant and patronising
The Europeans have a system that is working - no need to change it.PMcG is the right choice. The Americans have a system that hasn't been working so a great choice for them to go for such a respected figure as Watson. Both still able to play competitive golf and completely in touch with the players likely to make their teams, unifying rather than divisive personalities.Great RC ahead.
'team unity' has been the bedrock of europe's succsess in the recent ryder cups BLAH BLAH nothing to do with team unity EVERYTHING to do with european golfers playing better [or indeed putting better] than the americans.indeed europe did not lose at valhala because 'nick faldo' screwed it up.they lost because america played better and europes top played played poorly..its NOT complicated really !
re:- his attempt to become captain. The only plus I can see, it would stop him re-forming the most annoying trio in the history of golf commentary which isn't a problem because I just muted the sound when the patronising scychophantic Septic and the other arrogant patronising Scot joined the obnoxious Mrs Doubtfire to preach to the assembled masses.
@95,96, couldn't agree moreThe mileage CM has got out of his ryder cup captain win is a joke. Read this unique common sense article about the captaincy....http://www.scotsman.com/sport/golf/tom-english-ryder-cup-captaincy-not-rocket-science-1-2694408
McGinley the correct choice, once Darren had ruled himself out. The only bad news for the viewing public is that now Sky will doubtless have Monty commentating on the event - unless PMcG choosed him as a V-C.
