Rock admitted that his week at Sandwich had been a difficult test

Midlander Robert Rock departed Sandwich after a weekend of Open Championship disappointment admitting that his 2011 season is effectively over.

After shooting a final day 76 to end on 10 over, Rock still secured a top 50 finish, but the man from The Belfry admitted that he had hoped for more.

"The best tournaments are over for me," Staffordshire's Rock told BBC Sport.

"This was the one I was building up to for this year and now I've not really got any immediate goals left."

Having earned his first European Tour representative honour when he was selected for the Seve Trophy in 2009, there is the goal of again making the team at St Nom La Breteche in mid-September.

But, after a final round at Royal St George's which saw Rock rattle up four front-nine bogeys, then three more in the final five holes after his only birdie of the day at the short 11th, the disappointment was etched on his face.

"The week's not gone anywhere near to plan," said Rock, who had hoped to build on his seventh place at St Andrews a year ago, especially after earning his first European Tour win at the Italian Open a month ago.

"I played badly today and yesterday. I just wasn't good enough unfortunately and I'm really disappointed.

"I wasn't a million miles away. I drove the ball very well and hit some decent iron shots.

"But I didn't putt very well and, over the weekend, I have not played the shots into cross winds well enough.

"I'm not going to Scandinavia next week and I'll try and work out what I've done wrong.

"But I'm sure I'll be alright when I get back to a normal golf course again. This has been a really difficult test.

"It wasn't right, but next year, different venue, a different sort of challenge and I'll be back to try and qualify."
