World number two Lee Westwood made a steady opening-round one-under par 69 at the St Jude Classic in Memphis.

The Englishman dropped a shot at the second before picking up three birdies in his final four holes in the final tournament before next week's US Open.

Padraig Harrington finished level par, five shots behind leader David Mathis, whose six birdies ensured he has a one-shot lead over the field.

Sergio Garcia made a poor start to his campaign with an eight-over 78.

The Spaniard only clinched his place at the US Open at the Congressional Country Club in Maryland after a seven-man play-off earlier this week.

Sweden's Robert Karlsson, who lost to defending St Jude Classic champion Westwood in a play-off last year, carded five birdies in an opening 66.
